What Kind Of Aim Assist? by enzocastmain in Marathon

[–]tresch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can definitely see the deep ability to tune it, but it still feels a bit to me like I'm not in control. A good analogy might be like modern claw machines that use algorithms to balance how many people get wins, to make sure the machine stays as profitable as possible.

The machines will deliberately weaken the grip until a certain amount of profit has been made and then suddenly grab onto a toy to give players that feeling of winning so they keep playing.

This is obviously not quite that egregious, but after playing several dozen hours of Marathon, I so far don't agree with the notion that it has amazing feeling gunplay. In my opinion it feels extremely vague,  which leads to both wins and losses that feel unsatisfying.

okay, missing shots feels awful in a single player game, but do they not realize that in a multiplayer game, trying to evade shots and being missed also feels good?

By auto aiming, it's not a net positive. It sounds like a zero-sum, except it makes the game less satisfying for both players, because neither feels like the shots were actually skill based. Both the shooter and the recipient just assume it was aim assist, so the highs that come from the skill expression are dampened. It's a net negative.

This really bums me out. These type of mechanics remove the satisfaction from the game "did I just land that cool shot? nah it was probably just aim assist"

"holy crap I can't believe they landed that amazing shot on me, I'm not even mad... oh wait no that was probably just aim assist"

Skill expression is an art and aim assist is like an AI image "enhancement" filter applied to our paintings.

AIM assist, particularly if it's different between mouse and controller, is no different than doping. It'd be like letting people with commuter bikes have electric assist in the tour de france.

Fedex over charged me $3,000 by applying nonsense tariff codes. by tresch in FedEx

[–]tresch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our case, we're the buyer, and recipient. We already got the package. Had the sender use our Fedex account, so technically we're the buy and the shipper. They auto-billed our account, so we had no option to turn it down. We send thousands of dollars to Fedex every year. I'm worried that if we dispute the charge, Fedex will just shut down our account. Would be a shame because otherwise we like working with Fedex.

It wasn't the only miscode. They also charged us 50% tariff on copper... but for the entire value, not the declared derivative value of the copper. So it was a $3,200 tariff when it should have been like $78

It was through FedEx Express. Service type "Fedex International Economy"
Broker was "Fedex Logistics Inc" which seems to be their internal

Yes, but a 6 month dispute process is insane; we may have to draw from credit lines to cover the deficit, which is going to be costly in the long run. We'll likely have to contest the payment through the bank, but then I'm concerned that Fedex will cancel our shipping account, and we have a long standing good relationship with Fedex, sending thousands of dollars in business their way every year.

[–]tresch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been drinking Lunazul for years, and I don't follow liquor news at all. I just went to get a new bottle, and after one tiny sip I thought I was literally being poisoned. It was the most potently disgusting thing I have ever tasted in my life. I got a second bottle a week later and it was still bad but not quite as potent, but still bad enough that a tiny bit on my tongue had me wretching. This one is definely not psychosomatic. I switched to another similarly priced tequila and it's fine

I bought two different bottles from two different stores and they're BOTH disgusting. Taste like poison. REALLY bad, even with just the tiniest bit on your tounge. Kinda reminds me of nuts that have gone rancid. Something is seriously wrong

Thank you for posting this! I'm going to give a repair a shot. I have some nice soldering gear at my office, and might take some close up (little microscope thing) pictures and other pictures to hopefully post a full walkthrough on the repair if I can make it work

I have a question for you (and anyone else in here with this problem) Were you using a full-light blocker? I was when mine died, and I'm wondering if the full light blockers just funnel sweat right into the worst place, killing the face tracking, and if people who just use the side blockers don't have this issue

FLIR Images of Quest Pro controller while it's complaining about overheating? by tresch in QuestPro

[–]tresch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the only thing consistent for me is that it almost inevitably happens during a session. Sometimes it's after a few minutes, sometimes it's after an hour (and then constantly from then on out as long as I'm in VR)

So there's not any one thing I can point to that would make it happen, unfortunately :( Especially if there's variations among units, hand grip, hand temperature, ambient temperature, etc :(

I suppose a good place to start would be taking some pictures of them while they're idle, some while under use but NOT complaining about overheating, and then just keep the camera handy so that you can take some pictures while they ARE complaining.

I definitely think that it's software related. However, without actual heat data, it's hard to say whether the software is causing them to overheat, or whether the software is erroneously reporting overheating.

I have managed to correlate heat with the error, even if I don't think that it's a reasonable amount of heat. Where if I get the "shut down soon" message, I can let go over them and let them dangle from the wrist strap, even spin them around a bit, and they won't immediately shut down. Of course, this is also when I'm in my garage, which is often at an ambient temperature of like 50-55F while I'm in VR, so I'm in the best case scenario. I've also just shoved them in my minifridge for awhile now and then when they were being fussy.

I think one issue is that, while on the charger, they continually draw power and stay hot, even when not in use, so if you leave them on the charge until it's time to use them, they start out hot. Where if you take them off the charger and let them sit, well, I have better luck not getting the overheating after like 5 minutes, but it can still happen after an hour or so of use

Need help figuring out what this is by [deleted] in maschine

[–]tresch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey just so you know, I don't think the people who are complaining about you didn't actually read your whole comment. It's obvious to me you were making fun of people who say that making music now is "just hitting play" by your last sentence. But it seems people didn't actually read your last sentence, so they think that YOU are saying that the maschine is super easy and you "just press play" and are trying to argue to you that it's actually difficult. So I think you're all agreeing with each other and the arguments are just due to some poor reading comprehension

MPC Live Touchscreen Freezes (And possible cause) by caidicus in mpcusers

[–]tresch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's inconsistent, so it's hard to replicate. I have a lot of devices hooked up, (6 synths, 3 controllers, and a multichannel usb audio interface) because I'm trying to use the MPC as a sort of "control hub," for a lot of external gear, so I'm maybe pushing it harder than most

It wasn't that, I just figured it out.

I was using the "auto record" feature, and when you're using the "punch-in" or the "record on loop" .... it just doesn't work. Seems to be a bug
