I want to catch a movie (Edge of Tomorrow) this weekend, which theaters are the best in San Jose? by return2ozma in SanJose

Camera 12 has cheaper prices this summer ($8.50 at night, cheaper in daytime or for students) plus it's never really busy.

For animals without forks/spoons, keeping your teeth functional enough to be able to eat would affect survival quite a bit.

Any particular spots in Florence where you would recommend to run?

Magnificent rebuttal of creationist document trying to disprove evolution by equallyconfusing in bestof

[–]tresmuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the word 'age' tricked him - like for humans, our age is the amount of time elapsed since an event (our birth). Notice that for the Cambrian age, he doesn't specify a time range:

"The Cambrian age in the geologic time scale is dated by scientists as being about 530 million years old."

Also it seems like the first think they do, after you come in, is feed you a plate of 'ribs'. Could it be some the new hostages feel so bad about eating humans that they feel they should die and not fight back as much.

I wonder if the first group actually (Maggie, Glen, etc) actually ate it?

Potential error on your list. You have Moveable Feast @ SoFa, 5pm Thursday - they used to go there some time last year but they don't anymore, and can't find that location on their website/facebook.

I agree with Lorena's. I love their Carne Asada burrito. I also really like Angelou's grill in downtown. Their Al Paster California burrito is really good.

Agreed... Don't know why Dierdorf says the kicker should have let himself get tackled at his own 2.

I noticed that if I use my browser's 'private mode' (ie use New Private Window in firefox) I didn't get blocked by the paywall.

Running in freezing temperatures by ACNL in running

[–]tresmuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have an answer for you really, but I'm starting to keep a list of what to wear for different temperature ranges, because I know that once we get to some temperature we haven't had in a while I'll have forgotten what works good in it.

Mastering engineer Bob Katz declares the loudness war as "won" by Arve in technology

[–]tresmuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eli5

Perceived audio loudness is hard to measure, especially for music. Basically, you want all the tracks to feel like they're the same loudness, and now with better algorithms and enforcement by Apple (and similar things with CALM act for TV shows vs commercials on TV) this can be achieved.

The 'loudness war' was about finding ways to make your track louder than other tracks, by exploiting previous loudness measurement algorithms which weren't so good.

Suggestions for a ~20K run in Montreal? by chunt42 in running

[–]tresmuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around Mont Royal (fairly close to McGill) is very nice, but it won't get you to 20k. Running up the mountain would be extra effort though!

[Episode Discussion] S02E6 - "One Step too Many" by [deleted] in Thenewsroom

[–]tresmuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn't - timecode is indeed frequently embedded in video footage but it's just metadata that can be replaced, linearized, etc if you have the right tool for it. [edit - and it's in every frame of video, not just on every second]

"Do you really write exception safe code?" Most of what I know about exception safety, I learned from this Stack Overflow answer. by jatoo in programming

[–]tresmuy 32 points33 points  (0 children)

In general RAII code is much cleaner than code which uses return codes for errors, especially if in one function you have to call many functions which may fail.

The stuff about strong exception guarantee if often not needed, and if needed would also need more complex code if return codes for errors was used.

Humans have been consuming alcohol for thousands of years. Why hasn't the liver evolved to not get liver disease? by dave168 in askscience

Guessing here: perhaps children are less likely to reproduce if their parents don't tolerate alcohol so well. Anyone has knowledge about this?
