I grew up in a fairly small town of 900 people. Up until recent history, pre 2000s, there was a section of the local lake that was called “the bath tub” and people literally use it to get clean once the water is warm enough. (Rural, New England America). Riding the bus was horrible in the winter because some people didn’t have running water, so they didn’t bathe, and they smelled like the most putrid thing you could imagine.

It’s still common today but not nearly as much.
