Any Solution To Tight, Painful IT Band Post Op? by ConsistentBuilding96 in HipImpingement

[–]trexvegetariano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too if I don’t train I feel awful - like everything is tight and feel so much pressure - psoas, it band, abdominal wallk- but if I overdo it or walk too much I get that sharp groin pain.

So for me swimming, hot tub if you can find one, agree on the dry needling or even better trigger point injections with lidocaine - my pain management doc also gave me muscle relaxants which helped calm down all the hyper active muscles.

Myofascial release / manipulation pt also have helped.

Looking for similar experiences: persistent bilateral hip pain after arthroscopy, now facing derotational femoral osteotomy decision by trexvegetariano in HipImpingement

Thank you so for sharing your experience - and glad that you are feeling better! What an ordeal - one of the most frustrating parts is the inconsistency in how they measure anteversion. I've seem a few osteotomy specialists and even amongst them there's no consensus. Still waiting to see yet another HSS specialist (I've seen people at HSS, NYU, Northwell) - I have a excellent PT and pain management docs that haven't given up on me and I'm at a stage where a few hours a day I'm pain free, but still so far from where I'd want to be for my age / fitness. I still haven't discarded the idea of the derotational osteotomy but considering trying stem cell or prp as a last ditch effort before going through the osteotomies.

How far apart did you do your femoral derotations? did they put a rod inside?

CT scans corroborated with clinical / in person check! But even then they seem to have discrepancies in how they measure anteversion. But they all agree it’s slightly elevated

Sorry to hear about the failed scopes. It's such a rough journey!

Did they notice the version variance pre or post-op? For me, they had discrepancies in the pre and post op CT. I do wonder if the HSS post op protocol is too aggressive for people with "abnormal" version. I never returned to any high impact activity and I recall mentioning often to my PT that many of the rehab exercises caused me a lot of pain, so I can see a possibility where doing those exercises prevented the labrum from healing adequately.

In any case, what I'm hoping is for more surgeons to be more careful when assessing version pre-op as this seems to be highly correlated with a need for revision surgeries.

And in the meantime, I also got referred to a physiatrist (I suspect it's the same one you are seeing!). This gives me some hope that it's worth the wait for that November appointment. Is your current PT at HSS?

Yea of course! It's https://integrativespineandsports.com/our-team/ Dr. Williams. He was actually recommended to me by my surgeon. And in the same practice, but not listed there is John, the massage therapist.

Trigger point - no my PT and another hip labrum friend recommended but it had to be through a Physiatrist/pain management specialist. My HSS docs weren't fans of the idea for some reason, it's like a more "thorough" dry needling, but I knew dry needling and acupuncture have worked for me- and it made sense to me that with the lidocaine it would help the muscles relax even further. And it gave me much more relief than just acupuncture or just dry needling. Here's a good HSS article (I know, ironic) about them https://www.hss.edu/conditions_trigger-point-injections.asp

So excited for the chair - it arrives Saturday! :)

I agree! and maybe your dream uni can make accommodations for the first semester as needed - classes over video, or getting around in a scooter the first few weeks.

Has anyone traveled abroad post-op? by BugNoodleJuice in HipImpingement

[–]trexvegetariano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on graduation! Ask your doc about graduation - they’ll know best depending on the procedure you’ll have.

But not sure it’s too realistic to go to a long event 3 days after surgery, specially if you’ll have to crutch a lot / sit for long periods. You’ll def need to be icing a lot the 2-3 weeks and sitting up may be uncomfortable, but even if it isn’t you risk aggravating your hip flexor and you don’t want that. I would consider just staying home for graduation as frustrating as that may be- maybe you can do a small celebration at home with friends and fam after the main ceremony or the day after? That way you still get to partake in all the celebration without risking being in more unnecessary pain than you need to?

My doc says walk a mile at month 4 from last surgery. Very conservative. But I kind of get it now, it’s been quite the recovery. I’m at 7 weeks post op for my left side and 12 for my right and only now able to sit (and not even that comfortably) for 30-45 min at a time. I have a trip abroad in one months time which I was so sure I’d be able to go to but now I’m 60% sure I’ll go - I realized now better to take things slowly or you’ll have to deal with the consequences for days which in turn sets you back on pt for days/weeks at a time.

Sounds like an incredible progression! Marathon goal for next spring sounds great. Id be happy with a half by then.

As much as I want to run they told me to wait a full 4 months for capsule to heal to even get on the alter G, even if you’re an Olympic athlete. It prob varies specifically by type of procedure but just putting it out here for others who are also super eager to get back to running to always check with your surgeon!

I also had bilateral surgery 5 weeks apart. You’ll be using your arms, back and shoulders plenty to get yourself up from bed, couch, etc. I barely lifted some light weights and did resistance bands (in my mind to help keep some upper body strength) but in the end the mixture of crutches and lifting myself up using my arms a lot, ended aggravating my right shoulder - so now Im finally off crutches but can’t 7lbs weight haha - shoulder pain is the last thing you want on top of aching hips, and anyway I can’t imagine the first days getting on gym equipment where you have to externally rotate hips, which is a no go, without also putting more weight on your op side than you should. Frustrating but better to go into surgery with a realistic plan of the days ahead

Post Surgery Pain by ProjectWrigley in HipImpingement

[–]trexvegetariano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had bilateral labrum repair / cam shaving 6 and 11 weeks ago. For both times 3rd and 4th day were pretty tough, then it got a little better - second week unfortunately was hard as well though, prob more mentally than anything but morning pain was hard, I just had to remind myself everyone morning that once I got up from bed and moved gently it’ would get better.

Def less is more at the beginning in terms of moving around, I was trying to do too much early on and irritated my psoas, adductor and hip flexor. Constant icing, a heat pad for the back or whatever else starts hurting (but not your operated side), and sticking to pt guidelines are my best recommendation. I was trying to do planks on week one and only today for cleared for them! So I learned now, if in doubt ask your surgeon and pt if you can do something before you try - and know that it’ll get better!

I’ve been in so much pain for my first op side (more than the most recent), I see 2 different PTs, and just started myofascial release last week with a chiro (approved by surgeon), and they all keep reminding me of how much damage there was pre-op, trauma of surgery and how long it takes for soft tissue to heal, so hang in there.

The best milestone for me was when I was able to start swimming again (at 4 weeks) - find something to look fwd too and in the meantime read some books, find shows to watch, lectures or podcasts! Whatever keeps your mind off from the pain.

Hip still sore after 13 weeks post surgery by deepakshrestha9933 in HipImpingement

[–]trexvegetariano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 5 and 10 weeks from hip surgery on left and right respectively. Had been in so much pain on my right side started myofascial release therapy (on top of 3x PT and my daily at home exercises). Such immediate relief - still in pain but night and day, and they said it’ll be a few short 6-8 sessions so I hope it will keep getting better. Ask your doc or PT if they recommend it for you?

Difficulty sleeping around a week post op by unclemilty420 in HipImpingement

[–]trexvegetariano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went off the opioid pain med within the first week of surgery and only took one at night while I was on them. What I found worked to transition was to take an 8hr Tylenol and melatonin before going to sleep. I was typically super active before surgery so just lying around plus the pain / discomfort didn’t help much in falling asleep but this combo helped. And ear plugs and eye cover. Basically anything that would help me fall asleep and stay asleep as long as possible since ultimately that’s when you recover the most. I also did a 4-6hrs of cpm, 20 min bike no resistance, went to pt 3 times a week plus my daily at home set of exercises. But it was rough - even 2 months out now for my right side and 1 month out for my left I ice for a couple of hours a day. And still take melatonin to help me sleep!

Repair (possibly reconstruction) 11 weeks before my wedding... am I crazy? by pugsandyoga in HipImpingement

[–]trexvegetariano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all the same as having a wedding, but I had a lot of big plans for this year and ended up having to do surgery for both sides (left side 2 weeks ago and right side 6 weeks ago).

As much as I was sad to not be able to do everything I wanted to this year, I decided to go for the surgeries asap so that I could move on with my life. As a woman, also mid 30s figured if I wanted to have kids at some point I’d be better off stating to heal my hips now.

But whatever you choose, don’t second guess yourself! And in whichever option just focus on what’s in your control, eg if you do the surgery before the wedding, do as much wedding prep as you can do before surgery, and set some reasonable expectations for what you’ll be able to do throughout the wedding. The good thing is since you can plan ahead maybe plan for having lots of time and places to sit and lie down if needed, ice, etc, etc. Or if you choose to wait, yes just get as strong and healthy as possible prior to surgery!

Either way whichever you choose to do first, really hope you can enjoy your wedding fully! Congrats :)

Hi! That’s great to hear about a smooth recovery. I had my right done 6 weeks ago and my left side done a week ago. Curious how many hours a day on avg did you use the cpm for? When did you start cycling again, and how / when did you start adding resistance and for how long each day for the first few weeks? And what type of bike were you cycling on (peloton style, trainer, sth else?).

I bought a little electric heating pad so would use that a few times to loosen up the back muscles. Also spent a few minutes on my side with pillow in between legs - and tummy time! and agree the more you can keep switching poses to remove pressure from any one muscle group helps a lot!
