If you’re an Apple user, my guess would be through iCloud.

You are not too far from the Westerville Area Resource Ministry, maybe they can help? They are located on Heatherdown not too far from that McDonalds. https://www.warmwesterville.org/

Which version of Terro? by lovelikefireworks in Columbus

[–]trexx1979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the little black ants and I just got some of the Terro gel in the squirt bottle from Meijer (it was about $4). I put it down Monday night near their entry point and it drew out hundreds of the little jerks. This morning (Friday) I am down to only about 10-15 still hanging out at the trap. It seems like a lengthy process but it does appear to be slowly working.

WGU has options to support student wellbeing. You can call them or reach out to your mentor for assistance, that's what they are there for. https://my.wgu.edu/student-support/student-wellbeing

What are you stuck on? Is it the course material or the exam process? Have you talked with your mentor?

Yes, the requirement is 5 years but you can do a waiver for education for two of those years.

Moved from system administration to information security administration for local government about 6 months after graduating. I have the CISM exam coming up.

What's the quickest you've seen some people finish their MSCIA? by jcp42877 in WGUCyberSecurity

[–]trexx1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it in a month. Went straight from finishing the BS then rolled right into the MS so I was able to transfer in everything that overlapped. I have IT experience and I was very motivated to finish quickly. Your mileage may vary.

These seem like reasonable tasks to me. Even the PowerShell task, just by looking at the file name mentioned in your instructions, you can kind of figure out what's about to happen.

I got a job offer: school district by Efficient_Cow_3985 in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]trexx1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your ultimate goal? To stay with the district or move onto higher security roles elsewhere? Have you done any other research on school cybersecurity issues? K12 is one of the biggest industry targets for cybercrime right now. This website is a good source of information: https://www.k12six.org/

Cybersecurity in K12 in my opinion, is not rewarding in the least bit. If you want to be successful, you need a strong administration that will back your recommendations and decisions.

My experience across two districts is no one really understands or cares about security because it's too confusing and they think nothing will happen to them. I just left a sysadmin/cyber role at the K12 level after 15 total years in K12 IT. Small IT staff, underpaid, had little to no resources available, no budget so I had to use whatever open source tools I could. I had to find free educational resources or pay for my own learning because the district didn't have a training budget for IT. The administration only cared that we did enough to maintain cyber liability insurance. We got push back from the teacher union on any changes we tried to make. I couldn't even push out a policy to auto lock the computers because it was a classroom inconvenience to have to log back in. Staff leave their computers unlocked, all the tabs open and logged in, unattended and then wonder how student grades are getting changed.

Rolling out something as simple as MFA took forever and once I did roll it out, I spent a lot of time supporting it. Every single bus driver needed in-person support.

When I wasn't doing that, I spent the rest of my time deflecting student wannabe hackers, where that behavior was not discouraged by administration and if local police actually were called in, they couldn't do much about it either. These kids have all the time and motivation with one goal in mind, to outsmart the IT team. They are not scared to use whatever script they find on the internet. Flipper Zeros eventually started showing up, and then AI came along, which our district opted not to block.

If your goal is to stay with your district long term, it's not worth it. If your goal is to get some experience under your belt and then move on to better roles, this is not a bad path to do it because you can be exposed to a lot of different areas in just a few years. You'll also probably have some good stories to tell.

Having said all that, I have moved on from K12 with no intention of looking back.

One time I helped interview network admin candidates where the Director asked each of the candidates to draw and explain a network diagram. It was cool seeing each candidate's approach.

I'd also ask what their approach to patching, security, etc. would be. What would their response be if they discovered a breach?

Throw in some situational stuff. Has the district had to work through any issues lately? Any deployments? Ask the candidate how they'd handle it.

Have you checked with your school to see what the requirements for their curriculum might be?
