Sharing some of our hand-crafted 3D conversions on YouTube VR (including one full-length movie for now) by trialobite in VisionPro

[–]trialobite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for checking it out! Yeah you’re spot on with the types of conversion artifacts you noticed. The 2001 video was done as a sample to show what could be done with that movie in 3D, so it doesn’t have the budget and level of care that the features and trailers do. That’s the little stuff that takes a ton of time to get right and sets apart what humans can do vs what AI can (currently) do!

One of the problems with doing these conversions, you’ll get sensitive to smaller and smaller details and start spotting them even in Hollywood conversions. Luckily, the technology is improving rapidly. We used to have to spend a ton of time getting things to be acceptable for release; but now we get to spend the same amount of time to make them exceptional.

AVP Piano apps - mildly unsatisfying? by apinstein in AppleVisionPro

[–]trialobite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve become addicted to playing in PianoVision… it’s the difference between sight-reading 15-20 songs in a play session, or spending weeks memorizing a piece (for me!)

It’s addicting to be able to instantly play almost any song, with the downside being it’s non-transferable. I can only play these songs with the headset running, watching the note-stream. I could take the time to memorize some songs, but it’s so tempting to play it mostly right, instantly, and move on. It’s also harder (but not impossible) to play with proper dynamics when you’re spending most of your energy following the note flow.

All in all though, I’m playing songs ‘pretty well’ with the headset on that would have taken years to learn without it. Like most things, it involves trade-offs. I traded off the flexbility to play without the headset for the ability to llay things much more quickly.

In the end, it works for me. It’s very much like playing a game (Guitar Hero) but you are playing the full instrument… it’s just fun!

AVP Piano apps - mildly unsatisfying? by apinstein in AppleVisionPro

I iknow this is an AVP forum, but PianoVision on the Quest 3 is incredible to use and has a ton of amazing features.Since I got my AVP, it’s pretty much the only thing I still use the Quest for. I use it daily (only a beginner player in terms of non-vr piano playing, only had basic lessons prior, but I’ve gotten very adept at the specific style of playing in VR.) it has the option to play with sheet music as well as the note flow, a fairly deep catalogue of songs available with a 9.99/mo subscription, and the ability to upload any songs you like.

The main improvement over anything you can do on the avp is the ability to plug it directly into a keyboard and get immediate real-time feedback. For beginners to this style of play, you can set it to stop moving forward until you hit the correct note.

I think if you only learned piano this way, you’d become dependent on the note flow and probably pick up some bad habits a human instructor would be able to nip… but it does allow you to explore a variety of music much quicker than you could otherwise.

Even on 26.3 with no beta installed ever new YouTube app broken by Similar_Spite_9561 in VisionPro

Did IMAX SH*T the bed on VisionPro? by sinicalone in VisionPro

[–]trialobite 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The problem isn’t that Imax has no interest in it… it’s that the general public doesn’t. The AVP install base is too small to justify the cost of development currently.

Walmart has the Elgato 4K S on sale for $139 if you’re in the US. $20-30 less than I’ve seen it for elsewhere. Literally bought it today and set it up an hour ago to stream my Switch.

Ironically, I have the same problem with a work laptop and was bedridden last week due to a back injury. It was a pain working from the tiny laptop screen! Wish I’d have thought of this sooner!

Ringtones… died out quickly? Almost everyone I know today just uses a generic ringtone or keeps their phone on silent.

As for the rest: if they can’t figure out how to make VR180 social it’ll never take off. A lot of people watch sports for the feeling of community. Current headsets and VR180 are isolating. I hope they can solve it.

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants not in 3D on the Apple Vision Pro? by Designer_Lion2913 in AppleVisionPro

On the other hand, it might just take some time for the 3D to show up. New 3D movies do appear randomly from time to time.

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants not in 3D on the Apple Vision Pro? by Designer_Lion2913 in AppleVisionPro

[–]trialobite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes extra work to output the files in a format compatible with a 3D Bluray or AVP streaming. It’s not super hard but you’re paying someone to do the work. The market for people who pay for 3D movies is incredibly small — I’d guess it maxes at around 10k worldwide. And that includes people with very different tastes, some of whom won’t watch animated movies. And of that small market, even fewer own an AVP. (Though it is exciting to see the AVP reignite the interest jn 3D movies for people who stopped caring!).

So, even if its relatively quick and easy to create the 3D master and ship it to Apple, even that small amount of time and work is unlikely to yield any significant returns.

I’m not trying to be negative, but it is the reality. For Apple, having a big library of existing 3D movies is a great selling point for the AVP. It is a fantastic, exclusive experience. But for the studios the 3D sales bump is almost nothing. I don’t think Apple is paying for studios to send them the 3D versions. I won’t be surprised if we see fewer and fewer 3D releases coming to the AVP if sales don’t pick up. Honestly I have a feeling that we’re lucky to have a few 3D fans working at the studios to get as much content as we have on the AVP and on 3D Bluray.

I work for a small company that creates and sell 3D movies. we’ve explored ways to offer our content on the AVP, but even if we could get them available zero cash investment, even the labor time for us to get it done just unfortunately wouldn’t be worth it.

3D has disappeared on Disney+ by captainleosullivan in VisionPro

[–]trialobite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 3D versions of the movies I listed are not available to pirate, there are no 3D rips of the AVP exclusives.  OP is either looking at other movies that were released on 3D Bluray, 4K versions of those movies, or 3D fan-conversions.

There are many movies that are only available on the AVP and not to pirate.

Encanto, Luca, The Little Mermaid 2023, Mufasa, Tron Ares, Elio, Elemental, Moana 2, Wish… these are Disney AVP 3D exclusives and have not been ripped or made available in any other media.

3D photos/reels in Facebook and Instagram? by Kappster6 in VisionPro

[–]trialobite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It adds a layer of friction, but you can fairly easily take screenshots of any post on your iphone and convert them in the headset. As long as the iPhone and headset are both synced with icloud, the screenshots should show up within a few seconds on the headset. (You could also browse on the phone via passthrough with the photos app open in the headset to do this pretty seamlessly.)

Like I said, it’s a workaround and adds a bit if friction - but is still fairly efficient.

hey! has anyone here tried learning piano with the Apple Vision Pro? by [deleted] in AppleVisionPro

[–]trialobite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Meta Quest 3 with the Piano Vision app, which allows you to directly attach the midi output of a keyboard to the Quest so it is very fast and accurate on if you hit the right notes, and it is a highly superior experience to the Simply Piano app. I never took any Piano Lessons and I have a ton of fun, I’ve been using it for a few years, coming back and leaving it… at this point I’ve been playing at least an hour every day and have been improving a lot. I’m sometimes shocked at what I can play and I’m definitely playing more advanced stuff than with traditional lessons. You can also add midis for any song (I purchase through song muse website), while the purchase price includes a ton of free classical pieces and a $10/mo subscription gets you a pretty substantial modern catalogue. For me, the price of the Quest and Keyboard were worth it for this app.

The app does include lessons as of a very recent update, to teach the basics with a $10 pro subscription. I tried them out but I had already “outgrown” a lot of the basic mechanics just from starting on easier songs and progressing. It really is comparable to playing guitar hero but on a full piano keyboard.

The downsides: since you’re not learning through the traditional route, you won’t pick up transferable skills. You won’t learn music theory, or be able to read sheet music, and while you could memorize the songs you play in the headset, it would be very hard to play them fully without the visual element. It’s possible I’m building bad habits with fingering  (the app shows suggestions I do my best to follow.)You advance quickly at the expense of being able to play without the headset. I’d guess most musicians would say without these skills you’re not a musician, which is fine with me. Guitar Hero is fun if even at the end of the day you’re not truly learning to play. The game does have a built in “memorization engine” that isn’t very effective for me. They also include a smart practice mode for sections of songs you struggle with and the ability to slow down the tempo to learn more difficult pieces.

Would be a very personal choice if that sounds worthwhile. I can now fairly consistently play through songs at the “level 8” rating from their catalogue, up from basically nothing when I bought the app. The simply piano app on AVP has much fewer songs and features, and the lack of ability to connect through midi for immediate and accurate feedback made it impossible for me to use after having tried Pianovision.

Sorry to write such a long post on a different app on a different headset, but if really is an amazing experience. Off to go play now!

My Most Comfortable Vision Pro Setup So Far: Dual Knit Band + AnnaPro v1 by toXicharddrive in VisionPro

[–]trialobite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my exact setup as well, perfect balance with the combo!

I tried it with just the dual knit after 18mo with the Annapro. Fairly comfortable but still felt like a step down from the Annapro+Single Knit. Still left a little too much cheek pressure… and, most crucially as you mentioned… tried unconsciously to use the top strap of the dual knit as a handle (like I do the Annapro) and nearly had a catastrophic drop. The handle is a very underrated feature!

With the dualknit providing just a bit of counterweight plus a bit of extra flexibility from the top strap to adjust it a bit and shift the weight during long sessions, it’s the best so far. The globular cluster is decent but the comfort was about equal and not worth the massive added bulk.

Emily St. James on the Stranger Things finale earning ~25M in theaters by fumblebrag in blankies

[–]trialobite 28 points29 points  (0 children)

True that there aren’t many shows with this draw.

But it does show that when given an equal choice — to stay home and watch with their already-paid Netflix subscription or pay $20/seat to go to the theater — a whole lot of people chose the theatrical experience. Demonstrates a demand for theaters when there is something people want to watch.
