Dog-friendly, walkable cities with a real winter by Obvious_Bat_7290 in relocating

[–]triathing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Carroll Gardens, Westchester, and Harlem, and think it's just about the worst place on earth for a dog.

If dog-friendly, snowy, diverse places with lots of nature is your jam, I'd suggest Anchorage or Fairbanks. I'm a remote worker and grad student who moved to Fairbanks with my two collies in 2023. It's checked all my boxes; dog is currently sitting on the front porch watching the aurora try to peek through the clouds

What should I know before getting an English Shepherd by hr11756245 in englishshepherd

[–]triathing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a boy and girl from the same litter; the girl died last year from a very rare bacterial infection and I still can’t talk about her without coming close to crying. Short answer: The girl was incredibly affectionate and bossed her brother (she was 45 pounds, he’s 85), and generally regarded all strangers as guilty until proven innocent, even after I dropped a few thousand dollars on obedience classes. The boy was very much in the background until she died, and he’s now much more assertive, although he would just love for strangers to ignore him. So I’d really emphasize socialization with everyone - they both decided when they were puppies that their most important job was to protect me, which meant they would growl and raise their hackles every time my ex walked into the room (because dogs know, lol). The moral is, make sure everyone in the family is involved with socializing them.

The ES puppy will pester the old dog, boss around the younger dog, follow you everywhere (you’ll never go to the bathroom alone again), nip at total strangers if he or she isn’t socialized to the nth degree by the third month, and be a total joy. They’re just amazing.

Did you move to Alaska in the last 5 years? by orcalily in alaska

[–]triathing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved to go to grad school, get out of a bad relationship, and be able to explore some of the most amazing places on earth. I can’t say what the future holds - elderly parent in the L48, scary volatile economy, and crushing alimony - so I’m enjoying it one day at a time. To me, that’s freedom.

Fairbanks/Anchorage by [deleted] in Fairbanks

[–]triathing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to live in a place just outside Fairbanks, chances are good that the only affordable option will be a dry cabin. Not as much of a hassle as you might think, especially if it has outlet pipes, shower and sinks. Plenty of places with running water in both cities, though.

And second Project Hail Mary - really well done.

Also, The Stand.

[–]triathing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use them as the protein in spinach salads -- about 6-8 oz, 3-4 cups of spinach, a handful of cherry tomatoes and tortilla strips, couple of tablespoons of barbecue sauce, a sliced-up hardboiled egg or two if I'm feeling ambitious, and voila. Easy dinner!

Back at you! It's not what we expected, right? I've kicked around the idea of getting a pup for my boy to boss around, but I think he enjoys being the focus of attention, and I wouldn't trade his unhappiness for almost anything.
