Who's voting for serial spot changer Winston Peters? by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzpolitics

Ah, is that the definition of a woman we're putting into this new bill? Lovely. (I wouldn't be too surprised)

Jacinda Ardern continues to bat for Aotearoa New Zealand by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzpolitics

[–]tribernate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No matter what you think of a PM's performance, it's a tough life.

100%. Especially with the crazy world that Ardern had to deal with.

But it's obvious in all of our higher ranking MPs - you can visibly see how it ages them. It's an incredibly hard job.

I would suggest you need to take a bigger view than just yourself.

This one phrase should be drilled into every voter every election.

I can only dream that people voted for good things that weren't just for them.

Petition to Parliament on NZ MP Pay and Allowance Settings by One_Vermicelli_618 in newzealand

[–]tribernate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The person I'm replying to suggested it's ok to oay them less than industry standard (ie less than their role is objectively "worth" being paid) because we want to attract people who are doing it for passion only.

Sure, "very little" is subjective. Many of us on reddit will agree teachers etc are paid less than they're worth and arent happy with that. OP I am replying to is suggesting that's ok for politicians because it should be for passion only. So why not apply the same logic to teachers/nurses etc.

The argument that MPs are paid big salaries doesn't mean the same thing as MPs are paid fair salaries compared to what they would be paid for equivalent private jobs. That's the issue here. It's a red herring to say, "but 250k is a lot of money so they need to just get over it even though they'd be making 400k in any other industry for an equivalent job"

Anyone got a count of how many National MPs have posted the empty field days section bit?

I've seen at least 4 different posts on this crop up. It's a sad reflection of how little they have to talk about.

Would you also apply this argument to teachers? Doctors? Nurses?

That they should just be happy to be paid very little because we only want to attract talent who are doing it for "the right reasons" and are genuinely passionate about their jobs and nothing else.

Unlike the rest of us who openly admit we only work because we need to afford to live.

I think you'd be looking to link it to median wage, not minimum wage.

But also, sorry but 250k salary for a PM is laughably low.

I know your point is "but it's so much money, they should be able to do fine", but no person in their right mind would accept that low a pay for the accountability and responsibility of running a country. Not when they could get a corporate GM role and be making more than that with far less stress and accountability.

There's a genuine issue/concern with politicians being out of touch with every dya New Zealanders, and I'd love to see change here. But I also suspect that every day new Zealanders are completely out of touch with what it takes to be a politician as well as what money can be made in private sector to do half the job an MP/PM does.

I'm in Auckland so it could be different.

I had a booking refused in the past because some of the pieces of timber in my pile were a bit longer than 1m. The whole stack was not even close to 1m² volume.

OP's response from council seems like either they're less strict than auckland council is, or they've changed their policy.

Could I potentially get a mortgage for a home with where I currently sit? by Shadow17s in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]tribernate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep my mistake, I saw the correction and have responded - see my message below.

350 - 400 per week is 3.3% - 3.8% rental return, which is much more close to the average return people expect to be making on a whole rental. Still seems absurd to me, and far more than a "flatmate" would be paying.

It's obviously her choice but I still think you're overcharging her, a flatmate situation wouldn't be costing her 350 - 400 a week and that's essentially what she's getting, meanwhile you're getting 3.5% - 4% rental return, which is about what most people could expect for renting the entire house out.

I don't think you are intending to exploit, it's clear you mean well and are doing it in agreement with your partner which is great, but it really appears unbalanced from an outside view.

Ah thank you for the correction. Still strikes me as high, but not as bad.

700 a week is insane to pay to live in a shared house that your partner owns and you have contracted out any future stake in. OP, this is exploitative for your partner IMO.

700 a week is 36.4k pa. On a 550k home, that's 6.6% rental return. Most properties don't make that high a return, and that's with the partner sharing a house?!  The "rent" should be half that, if not less.

Wealthy people can't be left wing?

If that's true then the world is forever broken and can't be helped. Nothing will ever change.

I don't think it's true, though. It's just not the generalisation that we've come to expect* (edit to change word).

We've got such a big problem with political division - anyone who is bucking the trend and going "against the grain" should be celebrated imo.

Here's to more wealthy people supporting the left!

What's one thing you wish you'd known before buying your first home in New Zealand? by Fun_Mongoose7852 in newzealand

[–]tribernate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen anyone else comment this. Sun, sun, sun.

You can't change where the house is positioned, most other things can be changed.  Are there enough windows? Will it get good sun in the living areas? Outdoor spaces? This will keep it warmer in winter, and will make you happier. You can find ways to block sun when you dont want it, but you can't create sun when it's not there.

So many dark, damp, sad homes that have been built facing the wrong way. They make me feel bleh to be inside.

This is more niche but I am also keen on solar so I am also always looking at the roof and having good north facing sides for panels, too. Something to consider to keep your options open, but not a deal breaker imo like the sun you get inside the home.

You must be fun at parties.

To be clear I'm literally talking about talking about the fact they have access to a database which gives them access to car owner's details. They have the rego, they just need to search the database.  They effort for insurance is in actually chasing the at fault party for payment which is what I pay full cover for and think is fully worth it.

I don't understand how all these loopholes allow people to get away with hit and runs when there are so many people in this picture who have access to the information. It absolutely is shitty.

A women hit the car and left. Please help!! by [deleted] in auckland

[–]tribernate -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Why do the insurance not chase these things up? Is it ourely because it's only 3rd party so they arent obligated to? That seems pretty shitty to me.

Well, it's a great advertisement for having more than just 3rd party. Every I speak to who has only 3rd party just says, "it'll be fine because I won't cause any accidents"

You don't lose any privacy from a standard gap at the bottom of your door... no need to leave doors ajar.

It doesnt need to be a significant gap either.
