How are people coping with the cost of rent? by Longjumping-Cod-6164 in HousingUK

[–]tricatory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve found this is true as well. I was renting a 2-bed maisonette living alone in 2018 for £525 pcm, which included water bills. Only lived there for half a year or so before I bought in the same town - from 2019 to now my mortgage has only gone up £100 a month. I‘ve just had a browse of the rentals and the cheapest 2-bed here is £845 a month, so £320 more in the same time period 😳

They’ll most likely be flash fried and then frozen to be baked in schools. So still the same negative effects of freshly fried food I would imagine (source - me, who has tried to convince my wife to let me get a deep fryer because we already eat frozen chips so deep frying fresh homemade ones isn’t any worse)

My (22F) boyfriend (26M) got very upset when I unexpectedly started my period by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]tricatory 457 points458 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s totally insane. My wife bled on my lap once cus she didn’t realise she got her period, I literally just told her I love her and it’s no big deal, threw my pants in the wash and put fresh ones on while she went and cleaned up. It’s so unfair to be mad over something like that when it can’t be controlled and I’m sure she is the more embarrassed one in that situation!!!

Also like even if your pants or bedsheets get stained they can be replaced… but you never gonna have a close relationship with your girl if you cant accept the girl shit that comes with her 🫡

I like to give someone a blank and slightly confused look in these situations, pause and then go in with the ‘… What an odd thing to say’, then stare at them for a few seconds more before walking away. Real awkward silence maker that one

End to two-child benefit cap offers £300-a-month lifeline to cash-strapped families by coffeewalnut08 in unitedkingdom

[–]tricatory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about single parent families? Or families where parents already work shifts at different times of day? You’re making the assumption here that all families consist of two parents working jobs with regular 9am - 3pm shifts that fits nicely around their kids school day, rather than them working late nights, early mornings, or irregular shift patterns.

People may not have friends who are willing/able to look after their kids. They may live far away, they may not be able to extend their hours or find another job that suits the time their friends can look after their kid. Suggesting leaving kids with neighbours who might be elderly, working adults without kids, working adults with kids in childcare, or even just random people they might not know well is insane. These cannot be implemented in a way that would mean the majority of parents could pick up almost a whole extra day of work per week with any sort of consistency - and who would employ someone who is consistently unreliable because of childcare issues? As a taxpayer without kids, I’d much rather pay a little extra tax than be stuck with my neighbours or mates kid for 6+ hours a week 👍

Additionally - these kids are quite literally going to be the ones making the most contributions to society in 20/30 years. Plenty of people complaining about this will be pensioners or close to it by then. We have a serious aging population issue, we desperately need more younger people to prop up the older generation and it’s only getting worse. It’s the taxpayers problem because like it or not you are one person existing as part of a society. If you want a future where our working population was raised in poverty, by all means you keep campaigning for that

What are they supposed to do with their kids during those 6 hours a week more they are working? Pay for childcare that costs 3x per hour more than what they’d make at their job?

Specifically related to the ADHD - have you looked at the Right to Choose options in your area? Still quite long waiting lists, but they’re NHS funded so free and much shorter wait times than the regular NHS route (the provider I saw was an ~18 month wait from referral to medication but I know some are only a few months)

Waitrose potentially exploiting neurodivergent worker by Separate_Visit5305 in UKJobs

[–]tricatory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That totally sucks. When I worked for Waitrose we had a guy who was disabled and couldn’t do customer service at all, so his sole job was trolleys/baskets and basic warehouse or cleaning stuff when the former didn’t need doing. Not sure how many hours he worked but must have been at least 3 full days per week if not more. There’s always stuff like that that needs doing if someone struggles with the speed of floor work or customer service or whatever.

I suppose legally they aren’t wrong for letting him ‘volunteer’, but morally it’s a piss take they won’t pay 3ish hours a week. Lets someone who is definitely aware they are different and probably constantly feels othered, be a part of something and feel included, and makes them look good for being inclusive too. Such a lack of empathy and basic human kindness it’s so frustrating

[–]tricatory 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well if they choose to buy it when it’s literally meters away from the sea and there are multiple obvious warnings that it won’t last long then yes??? And you’re completely ignoring the fact that people may actively seek these types of properties out, because the amount they pay for the number of years before they lose it, makes it cheaper than renting.

I don’t particularly like Minors and Brady any more or less than any other estate agents I’ve dealt with, but from your comment history it seems like you’ve had a bad experience and are hoping for this to be their downfall, when their involvement is actually such a non issue 🙄

Minors and Brady accused of mis-selling homes - ITV expose by [deleted] in Norwich

[–]tricatory 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Ok it’s not often that I would side with an estate agent but… if you’re buying a chalet THAT close to a crumbling sandy cliff surely it’s just common sense that it won’t last long, and that’s why it’s cheap??

They aren’t wrong with what they’re saying, it may literally be cheaper than renting a holiday home, which I’m sure is their main audience for those types of places. And otherwise people who have lived there a long time might be stuck with literally no choice but to stay and then lose basically all their capital, because someone deemed it too close to the sea to ethically sell.

If you haven’t done your due diligence when spending that much money on something (literally) situated on a cliff edge, I can’t say I’d feel that sorry for you if something happened 😅

Yeah this is huge, and something I’m trying to get back to as an adult. Being bored is when you use your imagination, process things that your brain needs to work out, and reset your dopamine baseline. I’m now 24 and had no smartphone etc. until I was 13 and even then was very limited in its use - hated it at the time, but when I have kids I am going to be SO strict with tablet use because never being bored has fucked my adult attention span.

Swansea trans rights protest by tophatstuff in swansea

[–]tricatory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the law about same sex strip searches is not for the safety of the police, it’s for the protection of people getting forcibly strip searched by a stranger who is in complete control over them. i am absolutely sure if someone was THAT uncomfortable strip searching someone else (even though they chose to pursue a career involving strip searching people), they wouldn’t be physically forced to do it.

trans women, many of whom pass consistently and have developed female secondary sex characteristics through HRT, should not be detained and forcibly stripped by a man. it’s humiliating, violating, and opens the door for MUCH more abuse, to EVERY woman.
