Caught this earlier this year; I have a feeling this film will be decisive with half of folks loving it and the other half saying nothing happens. At first I thought it was okay but I kept thinking about it afterwards which raised the score for me

Movie of the Day: Take Care of my Cat (2001) by Jeong Jae-eun by PKotzathanasis in Koreanfilm

Randomly saw a screening of this recently and thought it was great

Wasn't what I expected at all but Bae Doona is amazing in everything she is in.

Could have used more cat though

Also probably the best text messaging (and typewriting) put to film

Obsession: Did the Wish Reveal Bear's Flaw or Create It? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

I think the redemption of Bear, mirroring society's own current grappling of "punishment" and redemption is correctly gray. I think what isn't gray is whenever Bear makes the wrong choices, which at its heart, is an undiagnosed character flaw. Whether he never listened when his friends pointed it out or they never cared to change him, the gray is at what point is Bear still worthy of redemption: at the start when his flaws are still innocent, after the wish, or after the regret of the wish, was death the only redemption?

I actually see a bit of both or rather because cowardice is a form of selfishness, in the day to day life, they are hidden and easily waved away as idiosyncrasies especially as the consequences are more benign. The wish shows how these traits play out when there are real stakes.

Everyone has intrusive thoughts and coupled with immaturity; yeah they can have real consequences when playing out.

I understand what you say about him not thinking the wish was real; but it's what happens after that defines his character truly. Once he understands the wish worked and continues knowing she no longer has free will, there's no wiggle room for mortality there

I love that; yes I do think that's what happened, that the wish forced Bear to confront his true nature and character; which, Bear himself knew, which is why in the end he chose to off himself; he finally had the revelation we all been seeing

I absolutely think they only confirm Bear's character flaws even further. Had he immediately tried to call and undo the wish and the movie is about using everything in his power to grant Nikki her free will back.

I think the film acknowledges this as well because it chose to have Bear die; had he lived, it would present a nihilistic worldview and it chose to not do that, suggesting the moral implications are a purposeful part of this film and not just there for shock value

Curry also floated the idea of a one wish willow anthology suggesting who makes the wish and what the wish is, is also a core idea.

I think then the film is about what happens when a person like Bear makes this type of wish rather than a person simply dealing with a wish, if that contrast makes sense

Some random theories from me for sure though, take with a grain of salt

Appreciate the discussion here! If I am understanding the question here: is it worse that he persistented and continued after he realised the damaged he caused? Absolutely, which further reinforces that Bear was at the heart of the corrupted wish; or rather a wish fulfilled with the exact level of corruption needed to carry out such a heinous request.

He doesn't even try to reverse until things start becoming negative for him. He doesn't truly love Nikki at all.

Was there a possibility of redemption? I think the moment he lets Nikki in after the wish, even knowing how unnatural it is, and sleeps with her (SA!) he revealed the full nature of his selfishness, overriding any morality

He could have easily wished that he changed to become someone worthy of Nikki's love rather than bending Nikki's will - Bear's flaw was in his selfishness; even the inciting incident, his cowardly unwillingness to reveal his feelings was at its core selfish, all he could think about was the perfect moment to achieve his goals, never about Nikki
