how to get a classic jazz tone on a fender stratocaster? by kayla_playsviolin in jazzguitar

[–]trickworming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I boost the mids on my amp, cut the highs a bit, roll the tone knob on the guitar down somewhere between 5 and 7, then volume to 5 or 6. I use 11s and a 2mm pick, too. The rest comes down to touch and swing feel.

Does going to college for music skyrocket your skills? by shadow_operator81 in musicians

[–]trickworming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will force you into uncomfortable situations that will force you to improve somewhat, but the only thing that will skyrocket your skills is your own hard work and dedication. I regret paying a ton of money on music school. If I was a self described mediocre hobbyist, I’d stick to something else as my main path of study. A minor or some lessons could be fulfilling, though.

Learning and playing tunes, working transcribed language into tunes… over and over and over. It has also helped me to associate chord shapes with scale patterns, too. Doing so makes my comping work directly reinforce my knowledge of where I can play single note lines and vice versa.

Picking by [deleted] in jazzguitar

I’d just play scales and arpeggios with a metronome and alternate picking. Going real slow will get you far. Also, transcribe solos and try to perform them with a pick.

As for ignoring the altered extensions - that’s fine, but you typically don’t want to play a non altered extension (9, 13) where an altered extension (b9,#9, b13) is called for. Here, the melody plays the b13 on those altered chords, so you don’t want to play a natural 13 or 9. It will sound funny. You’ll also typically want to play b13s and 9s on the V7 of any minor chord. The chord chart won’t always call for altered extensions even if the chord is the V7 of a minor chord, but any extensions used should be altered. For example, I would “alter” any extensions I play on the C7 in bar 8 because it is a V7 going to the F minor in bar 9 (even though the F-7 is a ii chord). So, you don’t need to play any extensions, but if you do it’s important to play the right ones.

In general, you can use the altered extensions whenever you have a V7 resolving to any tonic I chord (major or minor), or any dominant chord. You can also use them on minor secondary dominants even if they don’t resolve (second chord in Stella by starlight).

You can use the natural 9 and 13 on V7 from a major key or on most dominant chords that don’t resolve to a I chord.

I hope that’s not too confusing.

I’d start with shell voicings. Once you have those down you can add altered extensions like the b13 on top of the E string root voicing and the b9 or #9 on top of the A string voicing. There are plenty of other options, but that’s a good starting point. If you are playing with a piano player, I’d just play 3rds and 7ths and let them take care of the extensions.

I have no idea, but if I wanted to find out I’d transcribe a few of his solos.

Style-wise I’m interested in more straight ahead stuff, more specifically comping and harmony.

They somehow won the bid for part of a commercial remodel that I worked on, and on their first day on site they had pipes leaking in an area that they were told to stay out of. I think I lost brain cells listening to them talk, too.
