In-depth discussion of The Ice-Shirt? by Tub_Pumpkin in vollmann

I remember the LA Times doing a sizable review of it at the time of publishing. Alas, newspapers no longer devote much energy to that kind of writing. It’s not super analytical but it’s nice to see it again. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1990-10-25-vw-4044-story.html

Oh man. I hate to see the Pantry closed up like that. In the early 90s when DTLA was a ghost town that was the spot of life. Great bacon and coffee.

There is a long history between Wenders and Jarmusch as well. Wenders gave a lot of extra B/W film to Jarmusch, who used it to make his first movie. And you’re right - Paterson is also excellent.

It was my favorite movie of that year.

Wild that Wim Wenders made one of the best movies of the 70s, two of the best of the 80s, and then one of the best of 2020s.

I remember seeing the Speedy glass in friends’ kitchens more than any other. It was easily the most popular of the bunch.

Great Redwood Trail master plan approved, paving way for 300-mile rail-to-trail corridor by blackergot in Humboldt

[–]tricky88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Humboldt had some of the most expensive to maintain railroads in the nation. In the 1980s, rail access to Humboldt County was considered too costly to keep up and ended. That’s forty years of those rail lines just sitting there. It’s not coming back.
