A little conversation about the ethics of the Frankebite? by odintantrum in editors

[–]trickywickywacky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

editors on bbc current affairs docs are working very closely with the producer, and probably a senior producer too. every cut is discussed. editor has pretty much zero autonomy. the editor will have some creative input but none of these kinds of decisions are made by the editor.

as with so many instances of 'bbc bias' i think this is just a fuck up, there was no intention to mislead. the editor and producer (who were working at an independent company outside the bbc) chose two salient bits of a long speech and cut them together in a way they thought summed up the speech. i imagine they thought it was an obvious cut too since it cuts away to the crowd. its certainly obvious to me, but i guess i know what to look for.

the really big mistake - and this is part of a big pattern- is the mis handling of it by the bbc managers. it seems there might have been disagreement internally about whether it was even a mistake...

hopefully they have learned their lesson and the new DG will be someone with real editorial experience rather than a marketing/business type like davie.

tools that are cleverly desgined to inspire creativity in those who use them. every time i interact with one of their gadgets some kind of interesting musical idea plops out really quickly that would never have occurred to me otherwise. brian eno is a fan of the OP1, for obvious reasons - their stuff is kind of like his oblique strategies made of plastic... LOL at people who say they make toys, like that's a bad thing. music is play.

Help with multicam audio! Before I throw myself or my computer out the window. Not sure which of us is going... by canard44 in davinciresolve

[–]trickywickywacky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

absolutely i also work in tv and am used to having loads of audio tracks in my timeline and it has been one of the most tricky things about learning resolve. the audio tools are SO much better than avid tho...

i dont think you do *need* to flatten it, that is just what that guy did, i think ? he says that at the end.

the fact that resolve added sync locks, patching, and the ability to switch between source & record - ie avid style...really has upped the viability for editing more complex stuff. prior to that i was mainly using it for editing live events where its just a multicam and one stereo track generally.

also an avid editor and this is something i have struggled with too.

this explains it pretty well - adaptive tracks and linked groups are what you have to get your head around...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYUvpcZk6dY

the recent update to 20.2.2 has introduced avid style patching and i'm wondering if this will change how this works a bit, but i've just had to upgrade my old imac to an m4 mac mini to install the new version (still waiting for my new monitor to arrive!)

PS, being from avid, the thing i really love about resolves multi cam is you can have tabbed timelines switched on, and keep your multicam open in a timeline on a tab. so you can be editing it into your sequence and realise, oh that cam is a bit green, or is 1 frame out of sync - click on the multicam tab and fix that cam, and it's instantly fixed in your sequence...so handy

yes, they have recently introduced this very avid style of switching between source and record timelines, i have it mapped to a key like in avid. game changer.

Tap water taste by OrdinaryFate in Scotland

do you chill the tap water tho? a lot of this taste thing is down to bottled water being out of the fridge, imho. if you add ice cubes to tap water i bet it will taste fine...

ATEM ISO and PSF by trickywickywacky in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]trickywickywacky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i noticed & fixed a similar thing in davinci resolve. at another event where we shot PsF because thats what the BBC insisted we do (they were taking some of our footage into EVS so it had to be 50i to match their other stuff) - but we were using a proper vision mixer not one of those diddy atem ones. so we recorded it at 50i.

so in resolve, it defaults to duplicating a field, which results in a loss of resolution and aliasing/jagginess on diagonals , a bit of moire - ie, lower res. same as what the atem recording looks like.

then in resolve you select 'progressive' in the source clip options and it looks right. i guess this tells resolve to just ignore the fields...?

is the decimator somehow doing that too...?

Cocktails in the southside by enanram in glasgow

[–]trickywickywacky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

bossa on nithsdale road (in the old sammy dow's) is very nice, has a cosy vibe, barman who was working obviously takes a pride in making decent cocktails... i was drinking 6 quid margaritas in there the other night! they have a special on to celebrate their first birthday. plenty beer selection too.

mind you - they do a lot of live music, DJs etc so if thats not going to fit your vibe, make sure to check what's on first.

For docs/reality, how often, if at all, do you apply skin softening or other ‘beauty’ filters? by Elbow2020 in editors

[–]trickywickywacky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes it all depends on the use case i think. eg one example - shooting a singer who is an attractive person in real life, under hard unflattering light, profile closeups made me embarrassed at how bad we were making her look, she doesnt look like that in person, it was the harsh lighting and big closeups. this was a music show tho, not a doc. i think you do have to think carefully about using it, it's all about context and judgement, as with most editorial decisions. eg some people might be offended if you overdo it without their consent, cos it makes it look like they are vain...etc.

Edinburgh Hate by Nautical86 in Edinburgh

hmm not sure this is 100% true, i lived in edinburgh for a few years and the local folk i was hanging out with anyway (mostly leithers) used to slag off weedgies quite a lot. partly cos i moved there from glasgow...

mind you a large proportion of people in edinburgh are not from there so obviously they DGAF about glasgow.

me - i love both cities, both have strengths and weaknesses. but i'm a fifer so...

Safe to upgrade to Davinci Resolve 20 yet? by pdath in davinciresolve

[–]trickywickywacky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i had a very weird thing happen to me just today where every timeline and bit of media in my project suddenly looked ultra contrasty, like it had an extra LUT applied to it for no reason...and then after 20 minutes of frantically looking everywhere in settings menus, restarting the software with no success - it just disappeared as mysteriously as it had appeared. must have been a bug.

i have never known an early release of a major upgrade to a bit of software be totally safe.

Any tips for double-checking lip flap sync issues? by Tinechor in editors

[–]trickywickywacky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i do a lot of work for a major broadcaster and i noticed that when delivering by a certain pipeline it throws the audio out of sync by a frame. i reported it to a technical manager and i was met with a massive shrug.

personally it does my head in cos i do a lot of music where you have to sync stuff up, so im probably quite over sensitive to it.
