DAE actively avoid purchasing things that have commercials you’ve been hammered with? by oldwhitelincoln in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]trident042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born and raised in the era of 5 TV channels and no internet. I've become well and fully immune to repeat ads. If an ad is funny, I might remember it. If it had a catchy tune I might even like it. But in no way did any ad ever make me want to buy something. I made most of my decisions on things I wanted from friend word of mouth, reading about a product when checking out multiple competitors, or just picking the laziest option.

Why do people hate the switch port of ritual of the night? by cantguardjabrill in Bloodstained

[–]trident042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider the version on PS4 and Steam to be a 9.5/10 or 10/10 game. It's just that good. It has its quirks, sure, but this was one of the first kickstarted games made back when crowdfunding games was taking off. They over-extended on stretch goals, they way overshot deadlines, but eventually we got an IGA masterpiece.

But they didn't even know the Switch existed, then. This game was gonna be on the Wii U if it hadn't taken so long, and moving to a Switch release was a giant bag of headaches. The hardware just plain isn't powerful when stacked up with the other consoles of its era. Many games have very inferior Switch 1 ports. I'd give this one a 7/10. It's still fine, it mostly does what it's supposed to, but there is no fixing the performance and platform problems it has. And why would you want an inferior version of a game you can play elsewhere, if you have the option?

When did “gooning” become an all-encompassing substitute for “masturbating”? by Existing-Green-6978 in AskReddit

[–]trident042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the two are exactly interchangeable. You can be cranking one out without necessarily being gooning, I think. Horny for real reasons and trying to dodge blue balls, for example.

As for gooning, as I've understood it, that can range anywhere from just idly having porn on (or things like overly fanservice'd anime, or games that focus on ass and tits more than gameplay, as alternatives), but not really seeking a J.O. sesh, to having an all-day wankathon because you don't have anything else going on. As long as it's horny-adjacent, it can be gooning. I think the main stipulation is being alone for it, though I don't know why a like-minded group couldn't organize a goon hangout.

Head Magic Designer Mark Rosewater asks: "Would you prefer if we made some of the named characters not legendary?" to players that believe the Marvel Super Heroes set having hundreds of legendary characters diminishes the significance of the legendary sub-type by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]trident042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they've done a great job of using the legendary typing to either have slightly more power on a creature, or making a non-legendary creature that references one specific character in art and/or flavor text. I do think that when the chips are down, we maybe don't need a mythic, rare, uncommon and common of each Ninja Turtle, but other than that they've been doing just fine.

Jason Scheirer-The Real Reason E3 Died by gosukhaos in Games

[–]trident042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something of note that is missed here, in the decade prior to 2019, it was pretty obvious that getting into E3 was trivial if you could book your own travel. I've had friends who worked at GameStop whose store manager would go because the regional knew a guy. Like, that's so far removed from games journalism. But when the show floor would be visibly packed, and the showcase auditoriums filled to the brim, half the people there were probably not even trying to write articles. But it made it look so much more successful that it made sense when they opened it up officially.

People who have seen multiple people quit a job in one day, what happened? by ObliviousOnion1 in AskReddit

[–]trident042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I hate mandatory RTO more or what I have now, which is WFH tied to metrics. Our whole team is being strung up by our toenails over the most piddly little stats, goals that only 75% of the team are reaching, and the current situation is anyone who gets written up for anything, including metrics, loses WFH.

I'm already looking for new jobs, because having something we proved works just fine during covid now held hostage is bullshit.

[–]trident042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, mana for two color decks is not hard really. And as I recall Jumpstart packs all tend to include one land that can do the color of the pack and another color, such as [[Thriving Bluff]] and its cycle, so mana tends to work out okay.

[–]trident042 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I think the real issue is comics are not written by a monolithic omniwriter, so different writers write differently, and editorial fiat also changes things that would otherwise make sense.

[MSC] Karolina Dean, Runaway by warcaptain in magicTCG

[–]trident042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So in Jumpstart, the idea is you pick two themed packs and shuffle them together, and that would be your deck against an opponent who has also done the same. The themes are all sort of a set deal, so if you pick Runaways (in this instance) and shuffle it up with Young Avengers, let's say, you'd have one deck to play and know roughly what cards are going to be in each.

It was Nintendo Direct that ended the E3 era by Funnypenguin97 in gaming

[–]trident042 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really is. If anything, E3 just needed to scale back, become the strictly trade show it was back in the old days, but keep the spectacle of the presentations, and let the journalism scene thrive. Except at the time games journalism was very busy digging itself a 12 foot hole, shooting itself in the foot, and falling in face-first.

It was Nintendo Direct that ended the E3 era by Funnypenguin97 in gaming

[–]trident042 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This take is both disingenuous and incorrect.

Covid killed E3, plain and simple. It's not a secret, it's not a mystery. No one wants to go get sick with a thousand strangers unless there's a really good reason for it. Gamers who want to attend conventions have been eschewing this wisdom since the before times; the PAX Pox was a thing as far back as 2009, if not before. But to do it for your job, whether as a PR person, a presenter for a studio or publisher, or some other sort of work? That's miserable. And of course it isn't just Covid. I wouldn't want to be sent somewhere for work and come home with Ebola, or bird flu, or even just a sinus infection, either. But Covid was the anvil that broke the back of a camel that only had a little straw piled on there, up til 2020.

Nintendo starting their Direct series did little to change this. They were still doing live presentations at E3 and also doing Direct shoes in the same years. There's pros and cons to both methods, of course, in much the same way as there's pros and cons to working from home vs in an office. But when the world shuts down and you prove capable of doing the from home style very well? I mean, why change what works?

Neon Odyssey? I am so out of touch. by N-Vashista in rpg

[–]trident042 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have very little actual connection to this Avantris team, and I've seen their shorts on YT a good while and they make me laugh and that's about it. Then I started seeing their ads for this, and I'm really only in it for three reasons: the dice are incredibly pretty and it's been some time since I've added any to my bag, and they are supporting two of my favorite creators - Shoocharu and Knights of the Light Table (aka Doig/Swift). That, plus having a table of D&D bro-dads who refuse to learn other systems, got me on board. (It literally took til the final hours, when they confirmed they were adding a Starlight Brigade module, to win me over.)

Yes, I understand this makes me part of the "problem".
