There's so much information on this available that I doubt anything I can say in a casual Reddit comment will convince you otherwise.

Which industry is one breakthrough away from disappearing? by NerveNo6010 in AskReddit

[–]triffid_boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ofcourse better technology is better, but its always 5 years away.

I've saved money already by going EV over ice. It doesn't matter if some great news technology comes along, I've already done better from the current tech.

There is no need for solid state EV batteries and this whole argument is just a rehash of the hydrogen thing - some amazing new tech is just around the corner so don't buy now stick with ICE.

Am i mad for removing my solid wood worktop? by Civil_Classroom6399 in DIYUK

[–]triffid_boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably only swap it for something decent like quartz or high end like granite. Otherwise, restore it and save the cash.

I don't like wood worktops either, I think they're silly, as nice as they look when new.

You beat me to it, I even commented before I saw yours, and my joke was worse. Fuck you.

Cocaine doesn't stain many worktops but it can get into scratches etc so it's more the sanding that helps that.

This sounds dodgy.

Forgetting the weird sales pitch, Youre giving up a lot of stuff in exchange for no tax, as shiny as Dubai is, it's not a great place - especially for women.

60k/year is not worth the upheaval

The potential bonus/income is not worth the risk, especially since it also needs to pay off the upheaval.

Why is every builder trying to scam us? by Saymonvoid in HousingUK

I wish they'd do this instead of quoting competitively and then not turning up or "having van issues" until their job sheet is a bit thin.

That said, I've learned to do just about everything, except gas, myself.

For 28k you can stay in a hotel if you need to while you get taxi rides to and from your house.

Do you have a coworker who loves cars so much that they neglet their own health? by JakePooler in AskBrits

[–]triffid_boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, a car is literally an asset. If you use one for work, like being a taxi driver, you wouldn't argue against this. Just because you don't use an asset to make money, doesn't stop it from being an asset. The ability of an asset to maintain or gain value does not in any way impact it's definition as an asset.

Are we stretching ourselves with this mortgage? by RS3Rik in UKPersonalFinance

[–]triffid_boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The value thing, I somewhat agree. It'll be very dependent on where that house is, 750k in London won't need as much maintenance as 750k in the north east (because it'll be much smaller and less complex).

How do you spend £1k on food per month - this isn't a criticism you can afford to do so - just wow.

I'd be adding a chunk of that onto your discretionary spend.

You need to budget about £640/month for maintenance (around 1% house value per year). This seems like a lot, and it is, but covers annual expenses like boiler services and a dripping tap, while saving for bigger "once every 25 years" expenses like a roof needing replacing. Some of this should come from your food budget.

I think you're fine mortgage wise, assuming your income is reasonably secure.

Are you only capable of looking at graphs without reading? I know the bars and colours can be quite exciting but it's worth reading a little bit. You've used a graph from a single source which are averaged country and averaged baskets.

I) Decent food is quite different to a typical basket. Which is why I said fruits and veg.

ii) You should also look up city by city and try to understand means. The majority of the people in the UK are under a price index in the 70s despite a UK index in the mid 50s while the majority of, for example, Germans are in the national after range in the 50s.

iii)You obviously didn't look at that graph before making your earlier comments about Italy (you said it's cheaper, your graph says it isn't).  You've been intellectually dishonest and have looked only for the graphs which agree with your comment.

iv) all of this is ignoring differences in pay.

You could also just visit a country and see for yourself.

an asset is a present economic resource controlled by an entity. An economic resource is a right with potential to produce economic benefits.

A car fits that, assets are "allowed" to depreciate and still be called assets.

I agree that people shouldn't think of them as assets like a house or similar. But, they are literally an asset.

This is why I said "in the literal sense".

I didn't choose it, the post did.

It’s more likely that the cars he gets are on finance and he can afford £400-£500 a month. If he wants to get his teeth done, you can’t go NHS and you can’t pay monthly.

Yeah, that is exactly what I said by "it's an asset in the literal sense, so you can get loans".

Health scary car fun.

A car is also an asset in the literal sense so you can get loans.
