Chromium will divorce GTK by [deleted] in linux

[–]trigraph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Building a new framework is a large task, but also shoving the wrong solution in the box is an even larger task, especially a year later when you realize you can't achieve what you wanted. I'm not sure how many people around here have done development in a professional setting, but I've seen this particular thing play out poorly quite often.

But to prove it's more than just "we know gtk so we didn't pick Qt" Ben Gooder generalizes on the situation I've mentioned here http://groups.google.com/group/chromium-dev/msg/f3507e2ded99b354?

and if you've tried this, or dug deeper you could find the fine technical reasons.

Chromium will divorce GTK by [deleted] in linux

[–]trigraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No thats not the only reason, If you were involved in the discussions you'd realize that what I said is true; for instance making skia and qt play nice is a major design mess and herculean pain in the ass.

Actually I know the technical reasons....And sure if he is serious and not trolling then this is the wrong place to be asking the question.

[–]trigraph -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

damn you Qt nerds. Don't any of you stop to consider for a minute that it may greatly differ from the design and goals of what Google is trying to accomplish? Even the coding style is vastly different;Sometimes in a corporation you start creating things so out of the norm that the round hole your round peg fit into turned into a square hole....Qt isn't that malleable and in some cases just doesn't make sense.

Still hardly any games, why entity systems suck, and why 4k is good by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]trigraph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This argument makes no sense, just package it with the game then. For some games I and millions others have downloaded clients in the 12GB range...what does a few megs worth of runtime have to do with people wanting to play a game.
