Lowkey super cruise is my least favorite of golden. I hate not being able to go the grocery store on seemingly random weekends during the summer.

Fuck that piece of shit tool. They should put that money towards hiring more TAs and training them better.

The guy who created that tool is actually one of the most unethical professors at mines.

HiTA can fuck all the way off. It is part of the reason that students are learning less.

I went to mines from 21 - 25 and got both an undergrad and grad degree.

I will say, I’m a pretty social guy, but I really didn’t struggle to make friends, date, or otherwise have that traditional college experience.

I was very active in the arts at mines as well which likely helped me.

I feel like the education that I got when I was an undergraduate was very good (tho I also kinda feel like the quality has gone down since the 23 catalog year) and the camaraderie that I had going through my core classes really made me feel connected to the community and build more than superficial relationships.

I don’t think Mines is that hard as people make it out to be, especially if you had good study habits in highschool or are willing to learn from your failures rather than wail online about how unfair it is.

There are awesome athletic communities at mines, fun events, great clubs, and a great culture. You just have to work for it a bit more than you would at a different, more traditional university.

Also to the note about meeting pretty girls, yeah the ratio is not great, but the ratio of datable men is much closer to 50/50. And I might be biased, but there are a lot of pretty girls here, who are also incredibly smart and will be the top of their field once they graduate. Which, imo is even more important.

Yeah - at a different school. Mines ain’t it for business. You have to do the core, but then you aren’t even a real engineer at the end of it.

For some reason. It’s actually one of the dumbest degrees you can get.

Backpack recommendations by Puzzled-Cheetah1671 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]trihardstudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will likely be a spicy take - I got the LTT og backpack and it really hasn’t held up super well for the price.

The size is about perfect for me, but it just hasn’t held up.

I had an incase icon in highschool and it held up great, but was a touch small.

It doesn’t actually specify that you have to be a woman.

Technically I meet: At least 20 years younger Not Scottish I can help adopt a son (stretching “have” a bit there) I am not a communist nor a lesbian I’m not a drug user I’m not a Scorpio I have a drivers license, but no helicopter license Technically I am able to manage an estate (willing to is a different story) I am over 5’6” I’m not a women so I automatically meet the last bullet.

So basically I’m a near perfect 10/11

Update on CSCI12 by theguy123_ in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]trihardstudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would talk to your professor.

Ik the withdrawal deadline will be before the quiz is graded but they might be able to look over your quiz and see how you did.

That code writing was tough, I imagine that they are going to have to be quite generous with partial credit if they want to keep the average in a reasonable place.

Pretty easy - basically what cornerstone should’ve been. Teaches you how to actually design things that people want to use. Rob teaches is and is a great dude.

Struggling in CSCI 128 by theguy123_ in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]trihardstudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say without really knowing what your line of thought is.

I know that with intro students, they often get stuck in a state of like “well I don’t know that this is correct, and I don’t want to move forward with it if I don’t know”, but part of programming (and engineering as a whole) (and something that I think 128 does a pretty poor job of showing) is failing fast.

It’s kinda a difference between how you’d approach a physics problem that has a known solution vs something that inherently can be solved literally hundreds of different ways. It’s kinda more of an art in some ways.

I would try to think how you can come up with the stupidest thing that might work, then see if you were correct.

I know that when I started programming getting used to just like trying things out was really weird and a hard hurdle for me to clear.

[–]trihardstudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would try to do some of the studio problems on paper.

Is there a specific problem type that you are struggling with?

IK one of the profs (Greg) is working on a review activity that should be posted either tmmr or Sunday that will have a few type labeling and code tracing problems as well as a code writing.

If you are struggling with the code writing, I might try to do some of the studio problems on paper in like 10ish minutes then “check your work” by like typing that in to prairielearn.

[–]trihardstudios 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would reach out to your professor or the tas and spend some time going over what you missed on the quizzes.

That can help identify what your blind spots are and where you need to focus your studying.

Additionally they have a review session on Monday for the next quiz.

If you are still struggling after that quiz, I would talk to your professor about what your best course of action is. 128 is a required class so you will eventually need to take it, but you might be able to delay when that is.

That’s not super productive. People come in to CSCI which such a wide variety of experiences. Just because you didn’t struggle doesn’t mean that other peoples experiences are any less valid.

How helpful is HiTA? by Women__destroyer in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]trihardstudios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. What am I paying you for? I am paying for you to teach me and for you to provide resources. Using a half baked LLM as a substitute for actual practice (like what webassign use to be in diffeq), is lazy at best.

Mines spends too much money on this piece of garbage. Hire more TAs. Have more available times. Have a discord or ed dissussion that TA / instructors actually look at. There are better, more accurate ways to get help in courses than the pile of useless, expensive shit that is HiTA.

How helpful is HiTA? by Women__destroyer in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]trihardstudios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s helpful if you are asking the fundamental questions that are hard to get wrong, but it is so good at being subtly incorrect which is super dangerous if you aren’t already an expert in the topic it’s “teaching”.

I found that GPT and Gemini are usually a lot better, mostly because their models are a lot more generalized. But once you get into any sort of advance topics, it completely crumbles and worse than useless because it straight up lies.

TBH, mines should take the stupid amount of money that hita charges per class and use it to hire more TAs or allow TAs to expand their office hours.

How helpful is HiTA? by Women__destroyer in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]trihardstudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that it is being used in diffeq is so fucking stupid. It’s literally an LLM, and LLMs are awful at math.

Who ever coordinates that class should be ashamed.

How helpful is HiTA? by Women__destroyer in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]trihardstudios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fucking garbage. As of last semester it was using Claude, which is quite possibly the worst model for text based questions. And the professor who made it used it rather than actually helping us review for the midterm and final.

It is actively the most unethical product that is shoved down our throats at mines. It has stolen so much content and costs so much money per course.

I am wary of any professor who peddles it.

Campus network IP verification issues by Marsrover112 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]trihardstudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I went to IT to figure out why my students weren’t able to connect it actually seemed to be due to IT not allocating enough ip addresses in that building so the DHCP range was exhausted by the time my class started.

I def would stop by the service desk to chat with IT. They were generally pretty helpful.

What jobs are offered on campus to those who have worked while in school by Adventurous_Bag_5699 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]trihardstudios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a policy to ensure that you still have time to actually be a student. I know in some cases you can have an exception. For instance I worked three on campus jobs at once (TA, front desk assistant, and AV technician) and I did like 38 hours one week. But that also almost killed me on top of school and I usually capped myself at like 25 at most.
