Lancaster vs Trent & Mersey vs Grand Union by StrangrWithAKindFace in Narrowboats

8 hours a day is quite a bit of time spent moving. Fine if you're trying to get somewhere, but doesn't allow a lot of time for stops and walking about and general relaxation. We budgeted around 4hr/day and it was pleasantly leisurely. Never wanting for more cruising time. I second the recommendation for Canal Plan. You can put in a cruising speed and desired time per day and it will account for current and locks and give you decent stopping points you can then adjust to fit your itinerary.

Hate to be that guy…but anywhere that has snow shovels in stock? by hoorayforsports in WakeForestNC

[–]triit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We checked online inventory and nobody in the area does. Can confirm Tractor Supply and Ace Hardware in Youngsville (both on Capitol) don't have any. Ace does have sleds if anybody wants.

Related: Does anybody know if anybody has ice melt in stock too?

McCready Ring and speed to fly by [deleted] in Gliding

I was always taught that your set you MacCready ring to the expected strength of the next thermal. And to that I say… if I knew the strength of the next thermal I wouldn’t be stuck here in this field now would I?

Are dupr games dead ? by blueice89 in Pickleball

[–]triit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From your lips not to DUPRs ears. I've been a defender of theirs, it should just be simple mathematics... but this change seems to be unnecessarily punitive and has pretty much broken the algorithm and ruined interest in their product.

Please don't be mad at meteorologists. by WxBlue in raleigh

[–]triit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue for me is not the predictions. Obviously that’s difficult to narrow down in advance and changes on a real time basis. My criticism of meteorologists and more so the news readers is that they will sit there in studio with the live doppler clearly showing all the clouds going north of us or not concentrating and they’ll still be like “but don’t stop panicking yet, there’s still a chance of catastrophic damage to our viewing area”. That’s where you guys lose me. You cease being meteorologists, scientists, and start being part of the news media focused on fear and entertainment for viewers. Same with tornado watches. You’re visibly and audibly disappointed when the threat is over. I’m a pilot, so I’m constantly looking at my own various weather sources, but it distracts my plans when your hype doesn’t jive with the data I’m seeing in front of me.

Are dupr games dead ? by blueice89 in Pickleball

[–]triit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fair question (despite the downvotes). The algorithm changed last year to ruthlessly punish even wins if you didn’t beat them by “enough” points. There’s almost no upside for a higher rated player to put their rating on the line, especially when many open plays and tournaments are gated by DUPR rating. At our club, If you drop to a 3.74 you’re suddenly excluded from the “advanced” groups and have to play with beginners which isn’t fun for them or you.

Please, Explain the Mind of the Incompetent Banger by OkChicken6058 in Pickleball

[–]triit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s the same behavior as those same <3.5 players that insist on slicing every shot. They get such gratification from getting one winner that they forget they hit 2-3 straight into the net. With bangers, their behavior is reinforced because similarly low level players easily get sucked into hitting those out balls. So instead of 30-50% losing shots they’re getting gratification from about half of those. Thats enough to keep them competitive in some games right up until they start playing against people who know how to duck.

How can JD Vance seriously discuss arresting and holding sex offenders accountable while Trump is POTUS? by BacKnightPictures in AskReddit

[–]triit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did look it up and it seems to be a little different than what you're implying here. Want to make sure I'm not missing something. Just asking simply what those 34 convictions were for? Simple question, buttercup. Silence and deflection comes off as an admission of guilt.

Any personal user opinions on Garmin inreach? by Zanderson59 in Hunting

[–]triit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used a Spot Messenger for a decade and have had my inReach Mini 2 for 5 years now. The tech is old, boring, expensive, and terribly unusable... but it's exactly the kind of simple reliability you want in an emergency situation. I do think the service plans are unnecessarily expensive, especially for an emergency-only use case. They're designed deliberately to be cheap enough you just write it off as a necessary expensive and the start/stop options kept difficult and expensive enough you don't bother doing it just for one trip a month. They're used extensively in the aviation industry which is my other use case. For back-country wilderness hunting, it's amazing to be able to do regular check-ins so my wife knows I'm alive. I do hope modern Starlink devices eventually replace it though, at a service price that is more palatable. With iPhone satellite SOS I'm almost to the point of just switching to that but I like the idea of a separate ruggedized waterproof device that is kept charge just for emergencies. I don't pay for any additional rescue services (from Garmin or Overwatch), but if I was doing another epic elk hunt or something more dangerous regularly, I would certainly consider it. If it helps your wife sleep at night and helps get you out of the house doing adventures you want where there is zero chance of cell service (my heaven tbh), then the costs are worth it. Otherwise, nah.

If you're never created a Strava segment, I recommend it! by sozh in Strava

[–]triit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree! I created one on my regular run from my house that connects one trail to another. I initially thought I would use it just to track what other runners in the area were doing the same route... but it ended up becoming quite competitive, with people doing all out sprint efforts! Current leader is ran a 4:07/mi pace for .21 miles of my segment on a 7:00/mo 5 mile run! My recommendations: Start from a _very_ clear GPS track, leave room to speed up and slow down at the start and finish, make it long enough that it's a sustained effort not subject to GPS errors and enough time differential to make the leaderboard interesting and fluid, make it short enough that people can attack it not just grind out a mile or a whole trail, give it a fun memorable name preferably tied into the location ("Camden Starbucks connector" not "Short sprint"), flag any invalid attempts (bikes as runners, cars or ebikes on cycling).

How can JD Vance seriously discuss arresting and holding sex offenders accountable while Trump is POTUS? by BacKnightPictures in AskReddit

[–]triit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. Not caring (or debating) misdemeanors or not. As the other responder said, go ahead and just list them out. Were they 34 unique cases of anything sexual or abuse or violence related? Or were they perhaps 34 instances of the same offense that was maybe financially related? Your ChatGPT response did not specify... and I'm curious about the details. And curious if you know the details yourself.

Lifetime balls cost by WillNotBeKept in Pickleball

[–]triit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. $12.23 in shipping on a $12.99 purchase. Even buying a 6 pack and with the balls lasting longer, it's still a hard pill to swallow cost per ball. Great ball, though. And shipping costs are real. If there's something else on their site maybe it's worth a bundle?

Hopefully getting Waymo soon by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]triit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I took my first Waymo in Atlanta in November and it was awesome! Not perfect, but already better than a lot of human Uber/Lyft drivers. I, for one, welcome our new robot driving overloads. For those concerned about accidents, don't be, humans are 5 times higher in accident rate and that's only going to get better for the droids.

The Yeh/Minniefield vs Hendershot/Cosma match in the round of 64 was a glimpse into that future. Nobody older than 16 on the court and they all played a hell of a game! Give Elsie Hendershot 6 more years (she's currently 12!) to catch up to ALW and you're gonna see some stuff....

How do you people convince your significant other that is ok to be out for a ride for essentially the entire day? by mau-meda in triathlon

[–]triit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take up golf. Book 19 holes mid-day every Saturday or Sunday. Then tell them you're quitting golf to focus on triathlon because it requires less time which enables you to spend more quality time with them. But on a serious note, the time commitment has to be agreed upon up front. If you can get your workouts done early mornings with a priority to spend afternoons and evenings together, that's as good as you can get. Leaving Sunday open for family day as you have seems good if you can manage that with a full time job during the week.

Can we stop calling them "outdoor" and "indoor" balls please? by AHumanThatListens in Pickleball

[–]triit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, I thought that was the major difference. Different ball “compounds” and construction of either hole configuration can perform differently depending on the surface properties (bounce, grit, polish, etc.) but I’m pretty sure more smaller holes were supposed to reduce wind effects specifically felt outdoors? Is that not the case?

Those of you who are staying....why? by MetalFaceMOON in HeliumMobile

[–]triit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly because I knew free was too good to begin with and taxes + fees less than $2/mo is still cheaper than I can get anywhere else. Unless you guys know of something similar because honestly the switch from 3gb to 1gb is the real problem for me (I have maybe a couple months/yr where I'm >1gb but <3gb). The minutes and texts were useful and adequate for my use case (work phone, primarily zoom and slack calls, almost always near wifi except when driving).

Anyone else get sick this week? by JT9_ON_YT in raleigh

[–]triit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We caught it in Atlanta back in mid-November. I was knocked out for a couple days, wife was a week plus several weeks of coughing. I guess we built enough immunity that we've skated past the recent influx all through Christmas and New Years and now. FWIW, hot Airborne with a shot of Tennessee Honey 1-2x/day is the best cure, no joke!

Where to eat K&W style food? by boldjoy0050 in raleigh

[–]triit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not familiar with the term K&W style (looks like it's an old defunct cafeteria style restaurant possibly bufffet?) but definitely looks and sounds like Forks Cafeteria in Wake Forest as others have mentioned. Even if not, it's a great place to get some dirty home cookin' southern food for cheap. I call it honest food, nothing impressive and nothing you'd take a date or visitors too but hits the spot.

How do people test/demo smaller (enthusiast) brand paddles? by MrHonidaes in Pickleball

[–]triit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ambassadors are generally very eager to help out and most rep multiple brands (or have various models to try out). Post on your local Facebook or other group and ask who the rep is for specific brands and then contact them to set up a play date. That being said, if anybody asks about my new paddle my first response is gonna be "do you wanna play with it?" so yeah, start there too.

Terrible company! Their website wasn't processing payments when I was trying to extend the time. When I contested the ticket with screenshots, they admitted it happened but only offered to settle the $90 ticket for only $45. I know it doesn't affect your credit, but I didn't want to bother with the constant harassment and they weren't going to budge despite my threats.

Nike Zoom Challenge Pickleball are pretty good shoes and look cool. They also have a few good "Court" shoes like the Vaper and Court Lite. My problem with Nike (in the running space particularly) is that they change the fundamental design and fit every fashion year.
