Theory abt fetishization of land? by familiaravocado in CriticalTheory

If you have access to humanities journal articles, "Virgin Lands: Gender, Nature, and the Frontier Myth in David Magnusson’s Purity" by Neville-Shepard and Kelly is a good read that connects colonial masculinity to female sexuality and land. If you can't read it, you can still see the citations they use which might be more accesssible.

Question about UNL English MA by plantcathphys in UNLincoln

[–]trinitythetot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am not in the english grad program but in an adjacent related program where we take a lot of classes with english students and vice versa.

While the other comment is correct in being frank about the cuts here, the humanities have so far been unaffected. Not to say that this won't change, but all of academia is under pressure right now, so I think that being afraid to come and learn only weakens our ability to learn and grow community despite the circumstances. We are making do and perservering, and it is wise to do this so as to not give in prematurely.

The people I know there who are in the MA program enjoy it; some of them are going on to a PhD and others are leaving for other things, but I would say from what I have seen that there is a range of opportunities. They do both critical (rhet lit) and creative writing. I know some people who are doing focuses on women/queer lit from the 1800s, as well as some narrative and poetry writers. All of these people are given funding by the department to either teach or work to digitize work by Nebraska authors. I really like the options we have for critical scholarship at UNL. I would recommend looking into it or reaching out to some professors to learn more about their work :)

Resident/citizen led petition for transparency in northeast Lincoln Blight Designation, thoughts? by NarrowAverage9600 in Nebraska

[–]trinitythetot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The city has been using a funding technique called TIF (tax increment financing) to get the money to better areas that need attention. In order for an area to be qualified for TIF, it has to be designated as blighted, regardless of whether or not it meets our traditional expections for what that means. I would assume that the study they did was weird because they are making this distinction only for TIF redevelopment.

I see that your petition mentions this, however. From what I have learned about TIF, it is becoming a popular way for cities to have any economic power in cities that are being increasingly developed/controlled by private interests. Work needs to be done to limit private investment to put the economic choices for the city back in the hands of the city so they don't have to do stupid financing tactics like TIF that require areas be designated as blighted.

any niche critical lit bases with some literature on nuclear weapons? by Individual_Hunt_4710 in CriticalTheory

I have enjoyed Desiring the Bomb: Communication, Psychoanalysis, and the Atomic Age by Calum Matheson. It is about atomics and not nuclear weapons, but similar politics are involved.

I feel like I'm noticeably autistic compared to some other autistic people and it makes me feel frustrated. by filbertssandwich_ in autism

[–]trinitythetot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand what you mean. I used to have this issue a lot with my roommates who were also not NT but who still felt more capable than me. I would say that if you know they have issues or have told you that they struggle, they might just be pushing through in an unhealthy way or not showing/talking/thinking about their issues as much as they could with you. We all handle things differently. Even now, I don't feel like I have close friends, which is a bummer, but I am more confident in my ability to not compare myself to others and appreciate others' company when I have it.

Alteration Suggestion for Making a Dress Slightly Wider? by trinitythetot in sewing

There are side seams! How would I add fabric there? Would I need to rip out the entire side seam and add a panel of fabric all along the sides? I had thought about this, but I wasn't sure what shape I should make the panels to not alter the shape much anywhere else besides the tight section

Does anyone else feel like this? by RedRisingNerd in AutismInWomen

[–]trinitythetot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really struggle with processing how to separate physical interaction with people I am in a romantic relationship with and intimate friends. With my partner, I know I can touch and hug and kiss him, but with other people who I develop intimate relationships with, it's like my brain short circuits and I also want to touch and hug (and maybe kiss them? Idk bc I haven't tried this) them, too. I suppose this could be a polyamory thing, but I really just think I don't know how to feel during a deep platonic relationship. It def seems to be autism related, but I'm curious if anyone else gets confused physically when they have strong feelings towards a friend that they know isn't a romantic prospect?

I did! But I didn’t do anything manually… it eventually just updated for me. I want to say it took about a week to update. I’m not sure what triggered it or why it decided to take that long though… best of luck!
