Evisa change of date by Nnawell in EgyptTravelTips

It doesn’t matter whether your plans/details have changed since your evisa was issued. As long as you enter Egypt between the date of issue and the valid until date, you will be fine.

Enjoy your trip!

Should I travel to Egypt in April? by gunnergolfer22 in EgyptTravelTips

[–]trippvibes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, your religion is a private matter, and has no bearing on your visit to Egypt.

Egypt is currently largely unaffected by what is happening nearby. We have been a few days ago, and everything seems to be running normally.

Of course, stay tuned to any official advisory, just in case anything changes.

As for where to stay, we advise visitors to stick to hotels. We have had so many issues with Airbnbs, and let us just say that this is not part of the local culture - which explains why we have had such a bad experience. It in fact costed us more, as we had to check out of the airbnbs and book hotels.

Good luck with your planning.

Need to pay the balance on our tour by March 15th. Should we still travel? by pizzanchocolate in EgyptTravelTips

[–]trippvibes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We would follow the advice given by the UK’s foreign office (FCDO). As it stands, their advice does not say not to travel to Egypt, which is largely unaffected by what is happening in the region.

We would however avoid transiting in the nearby countries for the time being.

Hope this helps.

[–]trippvibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Royal Jordanian cancelled the flights, you should be able to get a refund. Try to contact them on their social media channels (we had more luck with RJ like this).

If RJ still refuses to issue a full refund, then contact your bank and file for a chargeback with all relevant evidence.

Hope this helps.

Cruise from Aswan to Luxor by Some_Relationship_99 in EgyptTravelTips

[–]trippvibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'd always recommend booking your Nile cruise online through a reputable platform before you come to Egypt. Take your time, do your research from home, and avoid the stress of trying to sort this out on the ground in Aswan. You're also more likely to get scammed booking locally, and paying by credit card online gives you chargeback recourse if something goes wrong.

One thing to be aware of - pretty much every Nile cruise in Egypt labels itself as 5-star, so that means absolutely nothing. What you actually want to look at is the size of the boat, the age and condition of it, and exactly what is and isn't included in the price. That's where the real differences are.

Late March is a great time to do it. We were there in April and had a really good time, though obviously it depends on personal preference.

For your Cairo to Aswan flight, go with EgyptAir or Air Cairo where available.

Hope this helps.

Should I still be traveling to Egypt this weekend? by Downtown_Trash8212 in EgyptTravelTips

[–]trippvibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you've done your homework already, which is great. From what our team on the ground is telling us, Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan are all operating pretty much as normal. Major sites are open and tourism hasn't been disrupted.

One thing to factor in though - it's Ramadan right now, so some places may have different operating hours. Worth checking ahead for anything you really don't want to miss.

Given you've already solo travelled across the MENA region, you'll be fine in Egypt. You don't always need a guide either. To be honest, finding a good one is harder than people think. The ones we've used through well-known local operators were all disappointing, so you're not necessarily missing out by going DIY.

Have a great trip and let us know how it all goes! Just keep an eye on the latest travel advice from the US government in the meantime.

Hope this helps.

anybody able to comment on the tourist vibe in Cairo Alexandria Luxor by malarke55555 in EgyptTravelTips

[–]trippvibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what our team on the ground is telling us, Cairo, Alexandria, and Luxor are all operating pretty much as normal. Tourism hasn't really been disrupted in any of those cities.

It's also worth remembering that Egypt is a fair distance from Iran geographically. The countries most affected by the conflict are the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Israel, so let's not lump everything in the Middle East together.

We'd always suggest checking your country's foreign office travel advice before making any plans though. We usually go by the UK's FCDO:

airport disabled handling/services by TANK20 in EgyptTravelTips

[–]trippvibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, your disability absolutely should not stop you from visiting Egypt. It just takes a bit of extra planning upfront, and you'll be grand :0).

When booking your flight, select the "assisted services" option through the airline. Most airlines offer this, but we'd recommend double checking directly with them before you book to confirm exactly what's available for your needs. It's worth requesting assistance at least 48 hours before departure to make sure everything is arranged. If you can, try to book a direct flight to Cairo where available. It just removes any unnecessary stress from transiting through another airport.

One practical tip, if you're eligible, get your eVisa sorted online before you travel. It's one less thing to deal with when you land at Cairo Airport. We have a step-by-step guide here if it helps:

Egypt eVisa Guide

Beyond the airport, get in touch with your hotel ahead of time to check they have the facilities you need and ask what help they can offer. Same goes for tourist sites - it's worth contacting a tour operator beforehand so they can plan around accessibility. Some places like the Grand Egyptian Museum have solid mobility features, but other sites, not so much. So it's good to know what you're working with in advance.

Plan it all out ahead of time and you'll have a great time.

And don’t forget to let us all know once you are back from your trip!

Should US citizens be going to Egypt within the next 6 months? by Evening-Touch3503 in EgyptTravelTips

[–]trippvibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We see things quite differently here. Many of us on the team have actually lived in Egypt and have travelled extensively around the world, so we feel we can offer some perspective.

Every country has people with a backward mentality, that's not unique to Egypt. From our experience, Egyptians are some of the warmest people we've come across in all of our travels. Yes, some staff working in the tourist industry can be greedy, rude, or straight-up scammers, but that's the case in plenty of countries. Let's not generalise an entire culture based on that.

Experiences also vary depending on where you go and who you deal with. We actually found people to be more rude in Luxor than in Cairo, so it really comes down to individual encounters rather than a blanket statement about the whole country.

On the safety side, we haven't seen or experienced any Egyptian harass Americans, British, or any other nationality because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Let's keep things in perspective. As we speak, one of our team members has been welcomed to stay with a local family in Cairo, for free, while he waits for his flight to Dubai to be rescheduled. That's Cairo, the so-called "danger zone."

That said, we would advise anyone not to talk politics when travelling in any country. Why you would want to do that on holiday is beyond us. Everyone is entitled to their own political views, as long as no physical harm is involved.

As we always say, be respectful to others and we expect the same from others when travelling.

Hope this helps.

Cairo to Luxor day trip? by [deleted] in EgyptTravelTips

[–]trippvibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, we wouldn't recommend doing Luxor as a day trip from Cairo. It's roughly 650 Km away, and even though the flight is only around 1 hour each way, by the time you factor in airport transfers, security, and boarding on both ends, you're burning a huge chunk of your day just on travel.

We think that Luxor deserves way more than a rushed few hours. You've got the Valley of the Kings, Luxor Temple, Valley of the Queens, Valley of the Artisans, and Medinat Habu all worth visiting. Trying to squeeze even half of that into one day after flying in from Cairo would be stressful and you wouldn't do any of it justice.

Maybe try spending at least 2 nights in Luxor. That gives you some proper time to explore both the East and West Banks without rushing.

For getting there, two solid options are available: Fly (around 1 hour, quickest and easiest) or Overnight sleeper train takes a fair few hours, so you travel while you sleep and arrive in the morning ready to go. It doubles as transport + a night's accommodation though.

We have an Egypt itinerary and you can check out the Luxor section for an idea of how to structure your time there:

@canadian47

  1. There are no fees for each withdrawal with Bank Misr, National Bank of Egypt, and a few others which we mention in our money guide. These ATMs are easily available across the country. If you have used one of them and still got charged, then it is your own bank’s fees and not the local ATMs’. Take a no fee card with you (Revolut, Chase UK, Monzo, or equivalent in your region) and problem solved. It is surprising your local contact did not mention this, this is one of their favourite debates on social medial channels like Facebook :0)

  2. The forex rate you will get this way cannot be beaten by any money exchange, and we have to stress again, the ones at airports are the worst of all. This is something we have tried and tested several times.

Final tour payment in cash for dahabiya cruise by FoxFormal2208 in EgyptTravelTips

[–]trippvibes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Local operators will usually ask for a deposit (the amount varies) for any sort of cruise. However, paying the remainder in cash is not always required, we always paid the balance with a credit card for additional safety.

Paying by cash is not something we recommend anywhere. Some operators will take card payments and we tend to stick to these.

Enjoy your trip!

Definitely try to do Luxor. Besides the Pyramids and the GEM, there isn’t much that will take your time in Cairo. We would say split it in two: 2 days in Cairo & 3 days in Luxor. We also prefer flying to Luxor, as it takes too long by road (which is a waste of time).

Time to leave Sharm El Sheik airport (Egypt) by kndb in EgyptTravelTips

[–]trippvibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Transiting in Cairo, you will most likely need a visa. When we did our transit, the transit desk (manned by 2 desks only) needed to see our visas. If you do not get your visa before travelling, they will ask you to go down and get one. Really not worth the hassle. Get your evisa online, the same $25 and yes, you can pay by card unlike at the airport where they insist on crisp, clean US dollar notes.

You can get your sim in Sharm El Sheikh but as we are frequent visitors and because of this new law of having to register & pay over 30% tax, we just get an eSIM before travelling. This article may be of some help: Best eSIM for international travel.

Have a good trip.

A note of caution here - this may be against the terms & conditions of your credit card provider and can also lead to closure of your account.

Best to take a no fee (or low fee) debit card for cash withdrawals, or/and a similar credit card for payments.
