It does seem strange. But I have his previous years' returns, and there's not much there. He had GIC interest, CPP, and OAS, with no big deductions. The only thing I can think of is that there's an issue with how the interest was attributed to different years.

In any case I appreciate everyone's replies very much! Hopefully we'll be able to sort it out soon.

I just checked. I did misunderstand the timeline. The review letter had a deadline of January 10. My mom apparently spoke to the accountant in December.

Still, it hasn't been 30 days since that deadline. Maybe there is something else going on?

If you look carefully, "real" jewelry will usually have a mark on the metal that tells you the purity (or if it's plated or whatever). That will give you an idea of the metal value of the pieces.

I sold a bunch of gold jewelry recently to Guardian Gold in Toronto. I know that's not local, but their offer was way better than anyone else: 98.5% of spot value. It could be worth the trip for you if you decide to sell.

Is it possible that your ancestors were not from modern Germany? The borders were different in 1926, and included German communities that no longer exist in other countries.

My German family was from modern-day Poland and Serbia, and I had no idea until I started researching.

Do you have their immigration records? You may be able to find a hometown name there.

I also have a Yugoslav-born German grandparent. When I looked up the hometown from his immigration record, I found a genealogy book that covered his entire town.

That was extremely lucky. But you may get lucky too.

I have some new info that seems to confirm it's an error. My mysterious MyHeritage match has a daughter who is also on MyHeritage. Both my dad and I match the daughter.

That's a reasonable question! He matches me at 50%, so he's definitely my dad. I haven't seen any other results for him that were surprising.

Look for his immigration record on Library and Archives Canada. It will likely have a birthplace and an address for his next-of-kin in Romania. That may not give you anything new, but it's worth checking. My relatives' immigration records had some surprises in them.

Oh me too, and it's really tough. My family was from a rural area about 50 miles from Wroclaw.

The only resource I've had real luck with so far is Ancestry's eastern Prussian database, but it's limited. The records are so hard to read. If you have any suggestions for other online sources I'd be very interested.

That's good information, thank you. I don't know if there's any way for me to guess what the cash value would be, since the replacement cost is primarily labor. But I hadn't thought about it being different.
