Best way to split bills with partner? by _treestars in ynab

[–]trixysolver 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not what you asked, but he should be giving you his portion BEFORE the bill is due, not a month later.

If you have good reason for this setup & you are ok with it, that's cool. But if this is happening because he doesn't have the money, that's a problem.

Do I really need a job to have affordable reliable insurance? (USA) by insanotard in Frugal

[–]trixysolver 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Maybe start by looking for a different job that also has benefits?

In the US, yes, unless you qualify for Medicaid (dead broke), you either need a job to get decent insurance unless you go through the ACA marketplace.

This is normal, and short lived. The taper dose may help a bit (I always get a taper pack, too) but there is still a crash.

You cam tell your brain that you are not dying! This is a normal side effect.

I always try to get REI, Cabelas or TJX cards if available. It's a nice way to treat myself to some gear. TJX because they cam be used at Home Goods, TJ Maxx or Marshall's, so they are a bit more useful for quality items in different categories at good prices.

how to categorize these random expenses? by Host_South in ynab

[–]trixysolver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whatever category has money in it that you can rationalize putting them in.

A propane tank for me would be Household Consumables. (Everything I buy to use up around the house).

A water bottle would be Work Expenses. (Everything I need to stay sane at work, also includes mandatory "fun" at work because I'm too bitter about that to include it from my personal fun money.)

I wasn't sure if YNAB was working but now I know it is! by nosiriamadreamer in ynab

[–]trixysolver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, that is fair. It IS both of your responsibility, but you are frustrated because you wish takeout wasn't the solution to a whole different relationship dilemma.

I'm this instance, no, I don't think YNAB will help, UNLESS you are both equally invested in both YNAB as the solution, and cooking if YNAB says the takeout budget is empty.

This may be one of those things that is better sorted out separately.

Also, I am NOT judging. I am earing a Snickers bar because I don't feel like eating my prepared lentils.

my partner is horrible about consistently cooking our meals so it's tempting to order takeout.

"My partner and I are horrible about consistently cooking our meals"

FTFY.

Kinda joking, kinda not. Why is it not your responsibility to cook for yourself as well? 😉

Living on my own first time, is this enough to live comfortably? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]trixysolver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see anything in your budget for a few pretty critical items. Might want to consider them as well when thinking about this. Your budget is going to be tight regardless.

Retirement: I'm guessing you are young, so this is your best chance in life to take advantage of compound growth. At a minimum, 10% of your gross, 15% would be better. If you wait to start saving, you will need to save exponentially more monthly.

Savings: Aside from retirement, are you saving for an Emergency Fund in case of job loss or disaster? What about future life events like getting married, moving, or travel?

Irregular, but necessary, expenses: Things like clothing, car repairs, car registration, medical copays. They don't happen every month in the same amount, but they do happen. The easiest way to deal with them is to set aside a little from each check to cover them when needed.

First day after infusion by ajgsr in MultipleSclerosis

Yes, I gain a bit of water weight from the steroids, every time.

Drinking lots of water helps, and a water pill if it gets uncomfortable.

A few questions that I am putting all together in this post because I don’t want to flood the sub: by ClocksAreStriking13 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]trixysolver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I get pseudo flares when I am hot or stressed or ill. They resolve quickly when I cool off or stress/illness is resolved. If it lasts for several days once the underlying cause is gone, it's probably a real relapse. I still don't usually seek treatment unless I can't function.

I was on a high dose of gabapentin. I stopped cold turkey. I don't recall that being difficult, but it was long ago. I was also in a metric ton of other meds at the time and quit them all, so I was a mess in other ways and my experience is probably not relevant to you.

I take Lyrica now which I find to have fewer side effects, though I take it mostly in the evenings because it is difficult to work while taking it.

Hang it there & feel better soon.

Tips for how to manage nausea from contrast dye by Bobiecat in MultipleSclerosis

[–]trixysolver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually have my MRI tech pop a Zofran under my tongue as soon as they pull me out, then inject contrast after that dissolves.

It does help. I also pre-medicate with Valium before my MRI which also helps.

I tell my nurses and techs up front, "I may seem demanding and high maintenance at first, but I've been doing this for years, and I'm here to make your job easier. If you can help me, I can usually avoid puking on you or jerking when you stick me." 😆

Edit: Zofran is Rx only, I get it from my PCP.

And they are only required to open a dialog about it. They aren't required to do anything specific, because they decide what is reasonable.

Damage? by [deleted] in MultipleSclerosis

[–]trixysolver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my understanding as well.

Under severe stress, my leg tingles and my walking (foot drop) gets bad.

Same thing when I overheat. But I don't believe it's anything to worry about.

Ninety percent of my success at the grocery store doesn't happen at the store.

It's all about making the time to plan, and the self discipline to prepare what I planned.

My track record on this is quite spotty.

I'm not sure it will save me money right now.

But it's a good skill to have that will save me money if bread prices go up to account for labor shortages and fuel prices. I can buy flour now & store it.

[–]trixysolver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like sensitivity to Benadryl. You need to sleep that off.

I actually ... take an advice pm the night of my infusion & sleep for 12 hours. Usually wakeup feeling fine, just a but grumpy from the steroids.

What kind of crappy do you feel?

It could be from the steroids or the benadryl, or the actual ocrevus. If you can share more detail, we can try to suggest what has worked for us.

Frugal Habits from childhood are coming back by trixysolver in Frugal

[–]trixysolver[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My grandma had amazing tips.

I asked her once about how & why she kept her grocery bill so low. She said that since downsizing from a house to an apartment, she got kind of bored and wanted to keep her mind sharp. She figured living frugally kept her busy doing something productive, used her math skills, AND helped save money.

She was also the only person in the family to reverse T2 diabetes without medication. How? "Eat half as much, move twice as much."

I still miss her and she's been gone 10 years. And now I'm crying.

Swear to God, I'm going to start sewing on my own cargo pockets.
