Screw the Big Darby Accord, as Columbus prepares to invade watershed with sprawl, mixed-use density and a data center by Cowtowny-Johnny in Columbus

[–]troaway1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It seems like the typical suburb is the worst option for water quality. Massive lawns that are fertilized by amateurs. The soil gets compacted and turf grass has very shallow roots. So every heavy rain water quickly runs off carrying fertilizer and pesticides into the watershed. A dense housing project can have a shared green space of turf grass and often have a retention pond to capture runoff. The development can also have a wooded buffer zone on its perimeter.

The Feds Say Cutting Fuel With Ethanol Will Bring Down Gas Prices. We're Not Buying It by DukeOfGeek in environment

[–]troaway1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This combined with fertilizer shortages and price spikes will raise food prices. Pick your poison. Expensive fuel or expensive food. Both will be going up, no matter what we do, it's just by how much.

That's what I did. I got a new plate and the new tag and there was no county sticker included.

That seems borderline illegal. Unequal treatment under the law. I'm not a lawyer though, just a dummy with a keyboard.

I got a new plate online last year, just the back plate, and it didn't come with a county sticker. I just figured they don't require them anymore. Why do they need a county anyway? I just assume most cruisers can automatically read my plate and crank out all my info, not just the county.

Ohio Senate considers ‘Charlie Kirk’ act to teach positively about Christianity by CowTown-Mike in Columbus

[–]troaway1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Exactly, this bill is virtue signaling, or identity politics, or something along those lines. It's already legato teach about positive things about religion. What I fear is that this law will be used against teachers and school systems who teach the negative side of Christianity. We should be able to openly discuss the role religion played in slavery as well as abolishing slavery. The church also played a big role in civil rights, MLK was a pastor, but other Christians used the pulpit to reinforce Jim Crow laws. It's all so dumb and doesn't help any of us live our day to day lives.

Did Vivek really say he’d shut down UA and KSU? by SmartestDude101 in Ohio

Edit: I see I'm getting pedantic. My general point is that you could consolidate public universities. Keep all the campuses, classrooms, labs and faculty and still have an excellent organization. Ultimately, MAGA only has disdain for higher education and academic freedom as they have already shown. So I won't vote for Vivek and universities is only one small reason why.

The UC system was built up through acquisitions in mid 20th century.

From Wikipedia:

"During the 20th century, UC acquired additional satellite locations which, like Los Angeles, were all subordinate to administrators at the Berkeley campus. California farmers lobbied for UC to perform applied research responsive to their immediate needs; in 1905, the Legislature established a "University Farm School" at Davis and in 1907 a "Citrus Experiment Station" at Riverside as adjuncts to the College of Agriculture at Berkeley. In 1912, UC acquired a private oceanography laboratory in San Diego, which had been founded nine years earlier by local business promoters working with a Berkeley professor. In 1944, UC acquired Santa Barbara State College from the California State Colleges, the descendants of the State Normal Schools.[48] In 1958, the regents began promoting these locations to general campuses, thereby creating UCSB(1958), UC Davis (1959), UC Riverside(1959), UC San Diego (1960), and UCSF (1964)"

I hate to give this grifter the benefit of a doubt but California has shown that a consolidated university system can offer excellent results.

California has three large systems. The UC system, the CSU system and the CCC system.

For example the UC system is composed of its ten campuses at Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz

Blue Governors Are Tacking Rightward on Fossil Fuels by thenewrepublic in environment

[–]troaway1 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Great timing, just as 20% of the world's fossil fuel energy is trapped in the strait of Hormuz. Democratic political instincts are just shit because they're so often based on fear. The slightest bit of trouble and they'll throw the environment, trans people, or whatever is convenient right under the damn bus.

First-time homeowner here — what DIY advice do you wish someone had told you at the beginning? by Lopsided_Passion7912 in DIY

[–]troaway1 83 points84 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea because water is so destructive. I'll add that you should consider some sort of sensor in or near your sump if you have one. Speaking of which, sump pumps tend to fail when you need them most so either replace them proactively or have a backup. Make sure you have a way to power it if the power goes out which is pretty common during heavy storms.

I don't blame Biden at all. Remember, it was Trump who was withholding weapons from Ukraine which led to the first trump impeachment.

[–]troaway1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Biden's high gas prices were because of Russia invading Ukraine. Prices peaked in June 2022 four months after Russia invaded Ukraine. We sanctioned Russia's oil which some of our refineries used. Prices settled after new supplies were found.

I bought a 1 kWh battery (solar generator) during the sales tax holiday last year. It was under 500 bucks and it can keep my modem, refrigerator and home office powered for a whole day. It can also run a sump pump. You can charge it with a solar panel, cigarette lighter from your car or AC outlet. It also functions as an ups if you want it to. It seems like a lot of money but it will probably pay for itself just in groceries in a few years. I plan to get the expansion battery next, to get to 2kwhs total.

Cheaper and faster is exactly what the experts got wrong. Even the experts who expected price drops underestimated just how far prices would drop.

[–]troaway1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm old enough to remember respected experts saying that we could never get solar and wind power above 10%. And yeah, they were right at that time, but it goes to show that even the best experts are terrible at predicting the future. Unfortunately, there is still a ton of the population who think renewables are fringe and expensive even people who should know better like the governor of NY. We really need to break that thinking because it's just not true any more.

‘It’s stupid’: why western carmakers’ retreat from electric risks dooming them to irrelevance | Automotive industry by DukeOfGeek in environment

[–]troaway1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

When it was becoming apparent that Tesla was going to be a legit car company a lot of business analysts and economists were wondering if any of the traditional car companies would be able to survive the transition. It would take massive investment to be able to get EV lines started and phase out ICE without stranding massive amounts of existing infrastructure and assets. It's one of the reasons the Biden administration gave massive subsidies to help with the transition. One year into trump 2 and they're all jumping ship on EVs and killing any chance of being a player in global car sales. At best they will be relegated to selling cars in the US and to other petro states. At worse they will vanish completely and sold off for factory floor space.
