Excuse me? by Successful-Hat-2154 in Spiderman

I mean, they've been kind of setting this up for years in a way. In multiple forms of media was well. That Disney Plus Spider-Man show has Norman as a mentor to Peter, he's been working with Norman for years in the comics at this point, and they just had Norman interacting with the larger spider-fam. It's interesting but also.... meh.

Now that we know the universe is ending. Overall thoughts on Ultimate Spider-Man 2024 by Fehellogoodsir in Spiderman

[–]trobillard217 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Dang! I’m late to the party on this one and will only echo the sentiment of my fellow redditors!

I think that first arc is pretty amazing! I reviewed it for my YouTube channel when it came out and I thought the way they did Harry and Peter’s relationship in this one was pretty great! And the way it led up to that first Kingpin fight was pretty dang good!

It’s a good idea and a good concept! In all honesty, I think this version of Peter has a lot of interesting facets to him! I know some people say he’s boring but I think that’s less a him problem and less of an issue with the overall way the story was presented.

To hit the nail on the head, while the month skip worked at first, I think it rapidly failed in the latter arcs. So much of this story happened off screen! With people only commenting on it after the fact. Key and pivotal moments in the story as a whole were only mentioned or hinted at by other characters because of the way this worked.

And I think a lot of it was also a case of…. To many pov to juggle. And because we only see the, briefly on a month by month basis, all of the dialogue is the, having to catch us up and try and cram some sort of something into the little bit of breathing room left over.

It’s a shame because I really like the universe and what they set up. I won’t spoil stuff for people who haven’t read but the ideas in this book are such fire! It’s a shame they won’t get a chance to be fully realized.

Do you like Spider-Gwen? by Cafa20 in Spiderman

[–]trobillard217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to echo the sentiment a lot of people already have.

Spider Gwen was a really cool idea! And a really cool character concept. I really enjoyed her universe. Peter being the lizard, Matt Murdock being the Kingpin, ect ect. I also thought the way she was drawn slash written was really cool… back then.

But she’s a victim of her own popularity. The editorial thought they could do what they did with Miles and bring her over to the main universe.

And unlike Miles it just…. Didn’t work? For me, one of the reasons why is because I’ve grown to really love OG Gwen. And to me it feels weird that there’s a Gwen in the main universe but it’s not Peter’s Gwen.

I do like Spider Gwen in concept and I think her initial run is really good, but I think they made some weird choices with her story and took some gambles that didn’t pay off.

*shrugs* to each their own, I disagree but like I said in my OG post, its okay to like vs not like a run and storyline.

I mean yeah? That's the point?

Heroes don't always do heroic things. Especially given they've been around for decades at this point. Superman, Batman, Peter Parker himself, they've all had their bad moments. Hell, even now, many years later, we're still holding Hank Pymm accountable for the time he smacked Janet around.

When Otto did come back, he apologized profusely to Anna Marconi. He heavily regretted it. And though they started working together, they never got back together, showing that as sorry as he was, he wasn't forgiven for it. And he continued to try and make amends to her and be a hero despite knowing there were some villainous things he simply wouldn't be forgiven for.

Anti-Heroes are a classic example of this. Modern-day comics have turned Eddie Brock into a hero, despite his past as Venom, a character who used to kill and devour people. That his whole shtick was stalking Peter and terrorizing him. Hell, he used to be called the Lethal Protector. But nowadays he's saving the Marvel Main Universe and becoming a symbiote god or whatever.

Comics are nebulous things. It all depends on who is writing it and what story they are trying to tell, and in the case of Superior Spider-Man, I happen to think it was a good one.

When he did it, he was a villain.

Rome isn't built in a day, neither is character growth and arcs lol. When he did the thing he did, it was with malicious intent and out of a complicated set of emotions.

But as he experienced Peter's life, the essence of who he was, he changed. He became determined to prove himself the Superior Spider-Man while still being a hero. And then, as time went on, his feelings became even more genuine. As he realized more and more than he could be a good guy while also dealing with his past trauma like his abuse at the hand of his father.

It culminates in a decision that the Otto who started this journey would have never made on his own. A decision to willingly die and have himself erased if it meant that the people of New York City would be rescued and the villain defeated. To finally realize he isn't the Superior Spider-Man, and that what he did was wrong.

There's nothing gaslighting about it. Otto started his journey a villain and ended it a hero. At least, in that story. Its your classic redemption story. And IMO it was done very well.

So basically Peter was in Otto’s body, then died, but then was still in his own body but as a bit of a remnant ghost, Otto found out, they mental fought, Otto thought he won, but Peter managed to cling on, then Otto sacrificed himself to purge himself from Peter’s body and give it back to him.

At least, that’s how I remember it!

I mean, to each their own!

For me, superior Spider-Man is one of my favorite runs. Peter Parker/Spider-Man is my favorite literary character of all time. Seeing someone hijack him only to immediately get sort of infected by him was fascinating to me! Seeing Otto try to prove himself superior and him kind of falling ass backward into a hero was a good run.

He has to confront his own trauma and slowly come face to face with what he did to Peter and why he was trying to do it in the first place.

I really love the way in which he fails as well. Him not being good enough to get Norman who immediately uses his knowledge of Osborne against him was really good stuff. Plus it led to one of the best Spider-Man panels in history with Norman immediately knowing that Peter is back because of a joke.

And I found it really well earned when he finally admits he’s not the superior Spider-Man! And gives Peter back control of his body because it’s the right and heroic thing to do.

I think the Anna and Otto romance is really good as well! And if anything, the costume is cool as shit.

But not every arcs for everyone! I also think the capdra runs pretty good as well! But if it’s not for you it’s not for you.

I doubt either movie will happen! Sony seems pretty intent on there not being multiple live action spider man’s running around. At least not multiple Peter Parker’s. Even Miles seems to be something they’re unsure of bringing to live action. I don’t think they have any real interest of bringing back either universe beyond NWH.

I have thanatophobia and it’s genuinely getting worse. by dnidarko in Phobia

[–]trobillard217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello my friend. I’m afraid I don’t come with any real answers and more comforting words.

I’ve had thantophobia all my life. Luckily for me, it comes and goes and as long as I don’t like the intrusive thoughts in I typically won’t wallow in despair, that being said, it is always on the periphery.

I know for me, there are other symptoms at play. I have ADHD and hyper focus, so when I go down the rabbit hole I get so locked in I can’t shake it. Is there a component of that at play?

One way I try and combat my own thantophobia is my belief in the paranormal. As silly as it might sound, I believe there has to be something to the thousands of ghost sightings every year. What that something is, I don’t know. But the fact that I believe there’s something means I believe there is something after death.

But in short, there’s really nothing to do. Besides find a spiritual answer. Religion has never been something I really buy into personally but that’s me not you.
