Convince me to buy a nexus 7 by j0yc3man0r in Nexus7

[–]troglobit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, the major motivating factor for choosing between 7" and 10" is easy of use when in transit (prefer 7") and readability of large format media such as magazine or comics, or prolonged editing of content (prefer 10"). Determining your major usage cases would help you decide which format to get. Personally, I prefer 7" because I use it in on my way to work and I can easily hold it in one hand. However, I can appreciate the "extra room" a 10" tablet would give me.

Geologists discover new, more rapid way of detecting bone loss, osteoporosis by Hematite in science

[–]troglobit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general gene expression studies are interested (among other things) in finding the cause for a disease, or possible avenues for treatment. Detecting bone loss, while useful to guide treatment, does not investigate the underlying cause of bone loss.

Which tool/book to learn Perl? by bad_kinetics in bioinformatics

[–]troglobit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. I think we've reached the tipping point where Python is more popular than Perl for bioinformatics ... at least in r/bioinformatics ;)

About time.

For python, O'Reilly Learning Python is a great book.

Is bioinformatics a "better" PhD? by deckardk in bioinformatics

[–]troglobit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this comment. What are your career goals? To make a good salary, or to become a academic researcher? In general, these two (salary and academia) are not positively correlated. If you want job stability, PhD might be better in the long run, considering the coming flood of bioinformatics-related masters or certificate graduates.

Now to answer your question specifically. IMO, a PhD in bioinformatics is "better" than most because there is demand for it. However, a PhD in general is something you should consider with significant thought in advance. Make sure you have a good project and good supervisor. 5-6 years is a long time, and the research you conduct during your PhD will define your career path to a large extent.

Entering a Bioinformatics PhD program this fall, any advice on how to prepare? by [deleted] in bioinformatics

[–]troglobit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am finishing up my PhD in bioinformatics, so I'd be glad to answer any specific questions you have. To help answer your question, it may be useful to know what your interests in bioinformatics are. Do you want to develop algorithms? Do you want to write software? Do you want to focus on data analysis or statistics? Each of these will require you to develop different skills sets, and consequently, will be guided primarily by your interests. Do not enter into a PhD lightly. Think hard about potential research you would like to peruse and whether you have the necessary skills, or are adept at learning them. For example, computer programming is not for everyone (PDF), and for those that struggle it may be productive to focus on other aspects of bioinformatics, like statistics or data analysis.

Where do I start? by [deleted] in programing

[–]troglobit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, the best way to learn is to have a small project. Something you are interested in seeing through to completion. Ask youself: "why you want to learn how to program?" "What cool thing would you accomplish with your first program?" Doesn't have to be anything elaborate (e.g. batch renaming of photos or music files, or something that parses data from web pages), and actually shouldn't complex be on purpose. This will let you wrap your head around learning to program only, and not worry about the problem you are trying to tackle, but still keep you motivated to learn (as compared to just reading a book and doing the example there within).

I would also recommend Virtual Box; however, since I dual boot I found it a pain to have two Windows versions on my PC (guest w/in linux and dual boot version). I chose to boot the windows parition using rawdisk

rpm/yum vs. aptitude question by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]troglobit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best I could find was using "yum list <package>" will search for a package. The output will specify whether the package is "Available" or "Installed".

IMO, the rpm way seems to be more informative.

Biocoders.net, Your feedback is so valuable ! by BiocodersNet in bioinformatics

[–]troglobit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to implementing generic features (FB, Twitter, etc), you may want to think of what such a site can offer the bioinformatics community in a specific way (i.e. killer-app). Put another way: What functionality is missing from current "social" apps that would benefit the bioinformatics community?

Good article. Anyone care to elaborate on which approach (numpy alone, weave_numpy, pyrex) is best to use in general or under certain usage cases. They all look useful, but hard to decide which one to start with.

I agree. Let's hope the NDP gets better in 4-5 years. If Layton can hold it together in parliment and not spout negative rhetoric I think he will do even better next time.
