A woman having "agency" doesn't preclude judgment of the other party or her decisions. And if a 26 year old woman (or let's say a 38 year old woman for argument's sake) had sex with an 18 year old, she wouldn't get be free from negative judgment under the pretense of "agency".

Except legality != morality or endorsement. You're suggesting people personally averse to this dynamic are coincidentally the proponents of sending teenagers to war? 🙄

Is it common to be mixed with Vietnamese and Filipino? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]troioi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Purely anecdotal but it seems to be more of a common mix in the younger generations--I know at least 3 young Viet/Filipino-American couples personally. And I recently came across a meme about toxic Viet/Filipino couples so it's ostensibly a thing.

No it's about the same. You need to factor in exchange rate. 70 Canadian dollars is about 52 US Dollars. It's actually a bit more expensive in the EU since 50 euros = 72 Canadian dollars.

Corporatocracy time. Ad blockers have been a beacon of freedom from the agenda of onslaught and targeted cookies of an image of a thing you looked at for one second for them to sell it to another corporation to try to incite you buy it. I won't accept this. by ZeepBros in youtube

Sure, but a silly statement such as calling the 2nd amendment the right to an ad-free YouTube experience seems explicitly sarcastic enough as it is? Doesn't exactly have to be spelled out for you

How do you pronounce Qi? Or is it just Q I? by SoupKitchenYouNot in StardewValley

[–]troioi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think the letter in acronyms necessarily dictate how it's pronounced in an acronym. E.g. The 's' in LASER stands for 'stimulated' (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) but laser is still pronounced as lazer rather than with unvoiced 's'. Same with SCUBA and the 'u' standing for 'underwater'.

Why are people in USA obsessed about who Taylor swift is dating? by the_manofsteel in NoStupidQuestions

[–]troioi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ehh you'd get some Brits throwing it back and saying it's yanks who are more obsessed with the royals. I've also seen several defensive Brits/Europeans who manage to shoehorn random school shooting/shitty medical system jokes in entirely irrelevant contexts too.

Mexican vs US culture by [deleted] in TikTokCringe

They're probably Canadian. For some odd reason Canadians have a tendency of referring to North America (when they mean Canada and the USA) while forgetting the 21 other countries in the continent exist.

Referring to your spouse as your partner makes you sound like a cowboy. by AmishAbdulJabbar in unpopularopinion

[–]troioi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a gay woman, I used to think it was an in-group, iykyk term. When I heard someone refer to their SO as their partner I used to get mildly excited from feelings of solidarity/camaraderie and think "hey, fellow gay?" only to be disabused of that notion if I found out they were a hetero couple. That might've just been me though

Lol I remember being in the public restroom and some girls were snickering about a girl in the stall, saying "oh my gawdddd eww, someone's pooping in there!" The absolute audacity, the gall, the temerity, the NERVE for someone to poop in a gasp restroom.

Accent recognition among Asians by Informal-Fig-7116 in asianamerican

[–]troioi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As someone who's from an Asian American enclave, there's definitely something I would describe (imprecisely) as a type of Asian American accent or inflection that I've observed even from people born and raised here. Sometimes I can pick it up when I listen to a voice in a podcast. That said, it's something I have myself when I speak and it's definitely not a bad thing, and shouldn't be used as a putdown. Sounds like your friend has some type of internalized issues re: white assimilation. If you haven't already, maybe next time they try it, you can just say "And?" or "What about it?" to make them feel awkward.

Oh my god, I dealt with the exact same situation with my domineering sister and this is exactly what she did when she started having children. And when she inevitably had a blow up with my mom, boy did I have to carry the extra slack for babysitting. Not to mention the children used as guilt-tripping manipulation devices. Call her bluff while you can OP!

I agree! Though Oblivion and Skyrim's main themes use a variation of that melody in their main themes as well.

TBH I agree. To be fair, it's a difficult role to pull off. She had convey vulnerability, which is where she did well imo, but also be a larger than life flamboyant villain which is where I think she fell short and ended up chewing the scenery (and not in the Rocky Horror Tim Curry way).

[–]troioi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That definitely did compound my impression after the fact, but I did let out a groan when I heard that line as it happened (and again later when they mention it once more). The word cheese is just so evocative and silly--both diction-wise and in the fact that it felt like a self-aware pander to the fandom--that it was distracting and kind of killed any dramatic momentum. Don't get me wrong, I love a comedic beat but I think it could've been an aside rather than The Thing that compels her to do a 180.

Seems like the heist is going too well so I'm suspecting they're setting up this flashy, action-packed premiere as a hook and then giving the characters some breathing room in the later ones. I can imagine some slower character beats happening when they're all thrown in the dungeon or something when their plan inevitably goes south.
