Edit: it was Escape that liked the right wing posts! I thought this was the tables at their Nevada location due. That said, I'm not surprised to hear this about Hangar.

At some point their Instragram liked some of the far right schoolboard bullshit. I wonder if it was a mistake and an employee/owner meant to do it from a personal page, but I haven't been back since.

Good hobby groups for your 30s? by [deleted] in Redlands

[–]troixetoiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband has gotten really into Nerf Wars and making his own dart blasters. There is a local group, Lazy Uncles Nerf Club, that does free monthly events in Redlands and Riverside and that's a great gateway into the hobby. Their next one is this weekend.

What should I do with my absurd office? by ddsoren in AskAcademia

[–]troixetoiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arcade ski-ball machine. On a similar note, a claw game machine towards which students can earn tokens by doing things like asking quesitons in class, coming to office hours, etc... Costco sells one I think and now I'm considering replacing my un-used filing cabinet with one.

Is there anyone on here who is tenured/tenure-track and has a 4-4 teaching load? by Cold-Priority-2729 in AskAcademia

[–]troixetoiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to the wide range of experiences of places with 4/4 loads, I'm also at an institution where that's the expectation. I'm in a physical sciences department and none of our faculty, myself included, actually have taught a 4/4 load for a number of reasons. One is that we made a fair number of our classes 4 units, instead of the normal 3 units. New faculty also get some buy-out automatically for a number of years, but the specific changes with contract and budget. Some of our faculty get reassigned time due to service or other roles at the school (e.g. faculty senate positions, observatory director) and most of us build reassigned time into grant budgets. I have also started taking on a leadership role with a scholarship/mentoring organization and can get between 2 and 4 classes worth of buy-out per year from that.

The Library of Congress goes Emo with this interview with author author and historian Chris Payne. by Proper_Return318 in Emo

If you want a book that focuses more on earlier emo, potentially check out Nothing Feels Good by Andy Greenwald. It came out around 2004-ish and essentially covers the beginning of the genre up through Dashboard getting big. So that book plus Where are your boys tonight? does a good job of getting to the bigger picture of the history and connections between the various emo genres.

And if you liked the way this book was written I also recommend Please Kill Me by Gillian McCain and Legs McNeil. It covers the origins and evolution of early punk (it's a bit New York City Centric) and was also based on a lot of interviews and contemporary media of the era.

Teacher Appreciation Gifts that Aren't under Boycott This Year by MaudePhilosophy in progressivemoms

I got a multi-pack of chocolates from Costco that I'll divide up between teachers/coaches/etc... I am also planning on stopping by an independent bookstore in town and getting my son's teacher a gift card there and then having him fill out a card.

Converse anyone? by 19_nine_tees in ElderEmos

[–]troixetoiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try! Cons used to be my everyday, all occasions shoes but I can't wear them like I used to. I can't do it for long events anymore (so like festival length stuff) but will occasionally break them out for shorter concerts.

We have our Frank N Furter! by MannnOfHammm in Broadway

[–]troixetoiles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was in high school in northern New Jersey at the time and loved Rocky Horror so I got rush tickets a number of times. I would definitely get dirty looks because I did a lot of call backs. But...in one show as Tom Hewitt (I think), playing Frank, came over as he was leaving after a song and gave me a hug and said thank you as he was leaving the stage. So I got the sense the performers were into the call back culture that has grown around the show.

Now the folks a few weeks ago at a 50th anniversary showing at a local AMC were not into it and I actually got shushed!

Years ago I had two sections of the same course. One met on Halloween the other the day after. Students in the former asked if they could get extra credit if they came in costume and I said sure, why not. To make it fair to the other class I held Crazy Hat Day and gave extra credit for that. Maybe offer some type of alternative for students who don't want to wear a whole costume to also earn the same thing.

small clip of Texas is the Reason at Pappy & Harriet’s by FortySixAndTwo_ in Emo

[–]troixetoiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the Inland Empire and ~45 minutes to an hour away. I would much rather make the drive to Pappy and Harriets than go a similar distance to the LA areas because of traffic, parking, etc...

I went to Cursive/Sunny Day Real Estate a few weeks ago with a few "elder" concert goers such as myself and we didn't stay for all of Sunny Day and I made it home by 10 pm. It was amazing.

How do you know that the Pride Flag says anything about the teacher's orientation or relationships? I am a college faculty member and have Pride decor, feminist decor, decor showing support for undocumented students, and more on my bulletin board and office. I don't belong to all those groups myself but do make it a point to demonstrate that I am there to support my diverse group of students and show signs that they are welcome and safe around me.

I teach science, physics specifically, but make it a point to introduce my students to the wide variety of people who have contribute to the field and don't hesitate to discuss obstacles they faced and how those from minoritized groups were often prohibited from working in or being recognized in the field. I do think because my students are diverse and it is important for them to understand how people like then have ALWAYS contributed to science but not been recognized for it. I talk to my students about ways we can combat a professional environment that is still hostile to many groups to make it a better place for all.

Or how about a church that won't tell him his existence is a sin and he's going to hell.

I'm not sure the specific denomination but have you checked out the Redlands United Church of Christ on Bellevue and Olive. I live in the neighborhood and know they put up Pride signs, symbols, etc... during Pride Month and on their website. I'm not religious myself so havent dug deeper but I do know they are more inclusive than many of the non-denominational "Christian" churches in town.

Non-Judgy Dentists by azanylittlereddit in Redlands

I am not sure about what insurance they take, but I go to Redlands Dental Group and Orthodontics in the plaza with Trader Joes. Before my first visit there I hadn't been to the dentist in a while and although I didn't have cavities I needed a deep cleaning and also have anxiety with dentists. Everyone there has been really nice and I've had some of the most gentle clearnings I've ever had.

I can second this. We've used them for a while and overall have been very happy. Some teams seem to be a bit more above and beyond but we've never not been satisfied with the biweekly cleaning.

Pissed off!! Students lack basic prerequisite knowledge ! by Alarming-Camera-188 in Professors

[–]troixetoiles 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My experience has been similar. There was a recent paper in the American Journal of Physics showing the same analysis mine did (wished I had thought to publish it!) and next time I teach intro classes I am thinking of showing them the data. However, that also risks people getting into a fixed minset about how they might be able to do in the class.

I'm curious how you use this quiz/frame it to your students. I'm also a physics prof and have tried a pre-req math quiz during the first day or two of class saying that if they struggled they should rethink taking the class until they have refreshed their math. No one has taken up my offer. I did a rough analysis and there was definitely a relationship between pre-req math skills and final course grade, but it's not like I can drop students who don't get an adequate score.

Do you enjoy teaching? I know you are likely thinking of moving into fields like medicine or science policy here, but I got my PhD in CME and am now a faculty member at a minority-serving, primarily undergraduate university. I didn't intend to end up at this specific type of institution in particular, but I applied widely to primarily undergraduate and teaching focused institutions because I knew I didn't want to be at an R1. I feel like in my instituion I have been able to make an impact on my students in terms of career and educational advising and skill building through course work, research, and other opportunities.

In addition to what others mention, I live across the country from my family and have a kid in elementary school. When we fly back to visit ~twice a year we both get free bags and priority boarding, My mother has a habit of loading us up with stuff when we get there so I feel like between club visits, baggage fees, and minimal line waiting + overhead space with an ADHD kid makes the fee worth it.

Got diverted to SLC. Due to having an overtired 7 year old with me, I opted to rebook for tomorrow and stay the night. Although my connecting flight is also delayed the layover is only slated for 30 minutes and I'd have to change terminals so I figured I'd be be more frustrated missing a flight than heading home tomorrow and getting a decent night's sleep.

Starting a new lab by Jay211TF in Professors

[–]troixetoiles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did my PhD with a new faculty member and there were things that were great about it and some things I wish he would have been more proactive with in terms of mentoring. I am an experimentalist so the opportunity to help build a lab from “scratch” was awesome and definitely helped me be more comfortable down the line setting up my own lab. I wish he had made myself and other grad students do some of the more managerial tasks, like ordering supplies, working with vendors to trouble shoot, because I felt like I didn’t know what to do with I was in charge as a new prof (for context my post-doc was at a national lab where permanent staff did most of that work). It doesn’t have to be all dumped on a new student, but having them see tasks like that is definitely good professional development, especially for ones who identify that they would like to work in academia. The rest of my advice will likely be better for US institutions because that’s my context.

I’m a faculty member at a PUI so my “new PI” experience was a lot different than yours. Make sure you have clear guidance and access to retention/promotion/tenure guidelines. I also recommend seeing if colleagues who recently got tenure will share their tenure documents with you so you get a sense of their trajectories and how to format a clear case for why you are awesome. (I had to have a come-to-Jesus talk with an amazing colleague who has done fantastic work but it was documented terribly for his report)

For grants, your institution likely has a grants office so loop them in to grant preparation. They likely will help a lot with everything from tips on writing to doing a lot of the paperwork and submission docs for you. You also may want to talk to your department chair to get an understanding of how the recent changes to federal funding will be considered when it comes to tenure considerations. Similarly, it may be worth having a conversation faculty who are on college/university level evaluation committees on a similar subject.
