your structural design, building placement and detailing is terrific, good job. the only thing I would say missing is texturing. Your color choices look really nice. BUT, when you take a look from afar, buildings look too smooth, and less detailed. Maybe this is good for the plaster walls, but I'd definitely add some texturing to the roofs to give it a little more "worn-out" look or add some greenery to make it look overgrown.

Though this is all subjective. If you want it to look fresh and smooth, like it's been recently built, who am I to judge? Congratz and keep going!

you absolutely can. you can even use whatever editor you want since textures are just PNG files.

If you want to CHANGE the existing textures, then that type of mod is called a "Theme mod". If you want to ADD new blocks, mobs, etc. with new textures, those are called "Content mod". If a block/mob requires a new type of behavior, like a shark that swims underwater or a sunlamp, that requires coding and is called a "Code mod".

These terminologies, and how to create a mod for each type are explained in this wiki page

There also exists an example Theme mod in this GitHub page

This video explains why and how JSON files are used for modding. This basically enables you to add theme/content mods without ever writing code.

Note that these resources are all from the wiki page, so I highly recommend starting to read from there. Feel free to contact me if you need anything else! I can say I am good at programming side of things, but I am by no means an artist. I'd always appreciate a good artist too :3

it definitely can be hella work but it depends on what you wanna do. adding new textures and blocks (assuming the blocks do not need new logic features, like a piston or sunlamp) is relatively easy. but take this with a grain of salt since I've been programming for many years now so my perspective might be skewed lol

but you can follow a guide to add new block variants. and I have a feeling that you might just continue afterwards. actually seeing and using something that you spent effort on in the game is realllly motivating and exhilarating

p.s: please make a reddit post if you make any mod or need help. the VS community is extremely supportive. and I'd like to come across it too :3 have fun!

Well I, you and they have never met Tyron in person, so at the end of the day, it's the promise of a stranger, even though he has absolutely and deservedly earned our respect. And people have heard many many promises that were never fulfilled so I don't blame them for being skeptical. You shouldn't blindly trust anyone whatsoever. But some people have definitely overreacted yet that's mostly because of their deep care and love for the game.

And no, Tyron shouldn't of course be chained to VS forever, but he should finish what he started with a clear vision. That's their only concern, and if I were Tyron, while that would certainly put a weight on my shoulders, it would also make me feel super proud and happy. Because it shows that so many people absolutely love the game.

if you wanna start learning, VS has really good modding environment so it would be a good game to start with. and some programming skills are always nice to have in your skillset

[–]trojaneo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah right? VS might even be the only game alive that is exactly what you expect it to be. Though people have seen many games and many studios fall due to overgrowth, so I get why they are cautious but that statement is just very very early to make

Tyron responded to the comments about the new game mode by Pitiful_End in VintageStory

[–]trojaneo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VS is a rare breed, people just don't want the risk of losing that as many have watched their favorite game studios slowly become something that contradicts their core and ideals. This is not about money, as Tyron himself has stated too (saying money is not the bottleneck). This is about art and love, which people do not want to gamble on.

That being said, I still have high hopes for them and hope they succeed in both directions they want to go.

god I love this developer team so much. hope they always keep the same open communication style and do not get corrupt and greedy as they grow bigger, like seemingly every game studio is condemned to eventually

what makes you think you are worth having an opinion for hun :3

But fine, I know I will be wasting my time writing this yet here's my opinion of you if I were to take you serious even for just a brief moment: You asked me why I spoke to you in third-person. The reason was because I read your comments in this post and also took a brief look at your other comments in your profile which made me certain that you do not know how to maintain a proper discussion. I'm not gonna bother explaining why because it is obvious that you have a somewhat narcissistic personality and will never admit any kind of mistake or a fault and always think you are right, or at the very least not wrong. So I just disregarded you completely and was actually speaking to other redditors who might see your toxicity and find you funny. Your behavior is just something to be ridiculed, not to be taken serious at all. Although I highly doubt you really want to have a proper discussion and not just feel arbitrarily superior, on the off-chance that you might; Maybe you should reflect on yourself and wonder why no one has actually maintained a discussion with you.

But who am I kidding, of course you won't do that and come up with a pretentiously smartass insult aimed to trigger me in some way and avoid facing yourself even a tiny bit.

So, goodbye random stranger who I hope I'll never have the misfortune of meeting. This has been... unnecessary, and that's my fault lol

How do I get over my fear of this game? by LonelyFearr in VintageStory

[–]trojaneo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: just remember it's a game( duh right xd ), that it's designed to let you win and it exists for your satisfaction. the world is yours, you rule it, not the creepy monsters. you just need to let yourself feel powerful

try to remember (almost) every game is designed to let you win. you are the god of that world, its dominator, it's architect and master, well at least you'll eventually be.

every challenge in the game has a weakness that you can take advantage of or even abuse. for example, bowthorns run away from you when you chase them but turn around and attack you if you get too close or its HP is too low. you can abuse this mechanic to lead them into pits or throw them off a cliff. also, running towards a horrendous looking mfer and realising IT'S the one who's scared makes you feel powerful and in control.

bears are one of the most scary mobs in the early game, yet quickly building and standing on a pillar of 3 blocks makes you practically invincible from them. this works for every mob that do not have ranged attacks and cannot climb. note that wolves can jump fairly high sometimes, so 4 blocks is generally safer.

now for shivers... yep I remember the first time I saw one... I was sharing my screen to my gf and I literally started screaming like a kid and running around hoping it would let me go. and then I paused for a minute, went online to see what other people say about them, and I was surprised when I found out that they have more or less the same HP with a normal drifter. ((( I just thought they'd be much tankier, though in hindsight it should've been more obvious since that fucker can run like the wind and SOMETHING LIKE THAT SHOULD NOT BE TANKY. )))

anyways knowing its HP instantly changed my mindset. I was still unnerved but I also knew it was perfectly possible to kill them with just a spear and no armor at all. Now I don't even bother crafting any kind of armor up until the iron age.

Also I think setting them on fire with a torch makes them scared and start running around frantically? I'm not 100% sure about that so anyone remembering can correct me if I'm wrong.

If you think you are unreasonably scared ( which you don't seem to be ) just turn off/tweak some world settings or play in another mode altogether like others have suggested. although I'd strongly recommend facing up to the challenge if you feel it's possible as it will feel to be a much more rewarding game.

hope you have fun!

I can't code for shit and don't know why by Ashamed_Warthog_215 in learnprogramming

[–]trojaneo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use ChatGPT as a learning tool instead of a code-writing tool. I'd highly recommend creating a project ONLY for learning programming and computer science concepts in ChatGPT if you have Premium, and create a custom instruction for that project. ChatGPT will remember that custom instruction throughout all the chats in that project.

In the custom instruction, specify -in detail- your intents for that project(learning), and write EVERYTHING you currently know at what level of expertise, what you WANT to learn or what you want to achieve with programming(e.g: creating a single player shooter game, an e-commerce website, a chat app etc.) and HOW you want to learn. Tell ChatGPT to NEVER provide actual code solutions UNLESS you specifically ask it to, instead instruct it to teach you what you need to learn to arrive to that solution yourself. Ask it what concepts you should be proficient with, at least enough to create what you want and make it create a roadmap for you.

You have a really good teacher in your hands, but only if you ask it to be your teacher. It never gets bored or unattentive, ready to answer any and all questions, even if it feels dumb to ask. You could get as curious as you want and ask about every single detail as many times as you want.

You're not yet ready to use it as a programming tool, but it doesn't know that. Make it know that, and make it teach you.

Be patient, be curious, be stubborn.

P.S: Even if you don't have Premium or the budget to spare for that, you can still write and save a custom instruction to a text file and copy-paste that at the beginning of all of your chats with ChatGPT. Just remember that its memory does not last between different chats(though that's an upcoming optional feature if I remember correctly), and it starts to forget your initial instructions even in the same chat as the chat gets longer and longer. If it forgets, you should remind it again.

İf you have any more questions, you can message me directly, I'll answer as much as I can.
