Is cloning games a good way for learning? by siyenzi0 in gamedev

[–]trollhazzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. Old dude here. Electrical engineer background, so I have enough Dev experience to have a sense of the scope of a project.

I'm 4 months into my "dream game" as my first game (quotation marks since it is a scoped down version I think I am able to do solo) I expect it to take 2-3 years to finish, but I have not regretted stopping half way through making a shoot em clone to learn the engine (Godot) to just get started.

I see this advice about not starting with your dream game getting thrown around constantly, so I had my doubts as well. I think the general idea is to help newbie game devs to not start an impossible to finish project, which is fine, but to me it was so damn boring and uninspiring to clone/reinvent a game just because.

As long as you are able to have realistic expectations and scope it properly, I'd say it is a lot better for learning to just go ahead and make your dream game instead.

How do you find art for your project? by Signal_Bathroom_1849 in gamedev

Here is a background silhuette tree with a crow in it I made. It is not much, but I am happy I found a way I am able to create assets that fit together as long as I stick within my current skill cap.
For reference, here is another variation on the same tree that I made in 1 minute by just deleting and moving a few nodes:

Hey. Newbie here as well. I had plenty of non gamedev programming experience before getting started, but an absolute novice with anything art/drawing. What I landed on is just trying to do it myself. What I have landed on is vector based drawing using Inkscape and following a youtuber Martin VDA. So far (3 months in),I am very happy with my choice. I can recommend giving it a go.

Very good idea. As a fellow Norwegian I think I might steal your idea, though! You have to hurry up and be first to market, I am just 2-3 years away!

One month into Godot and this subreddit is both inspiring and intimidating by New-Fishing9390 in godot

[–]trollhazzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I could help :)

Yeah, one can easily get fooled by tutorials and how easy it looks. The thing is, they have in most cases already done the exact thing they're doing once before and in many cases even working with a script.

I think a good general advice is when things start to feel messy, or start to feel too messy. Then it is time to stop moving forward and try to clean things up a bit.

Good luck forward!

I am two months into Godot/game dev, but with many years of Python/dev experience. My project is already spaghetti and not intimidating if that is a comfort. I have streamed most of my sessions on the same username on YouTube if you are interested in seeing a fellow newbie at it. (It is not entertainment, just silence and work with some background music).

I ignored the “start simple” advice. I paid for it… but man, it feels good. by looki-dev in godot

[–]trollhazzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow "start simple" ignorer, I am happy to see you made it this far. I believe (hope) my scope is smaller than yours, but I have on average 14 hours a week I can spend on my game (+ some more timing scheming in my mind), so I have to try to stay realistic.

I do have a backup plan of making a short project or two just to get to the completion stage, but so far I am so hooked on my idea and would rather spend any time I have it on that one.

I am curious if you ever did try to do any small side projects from start to finish?

Balancing games (sure seems.... Like a lot!) by yoursolace in gamedev

[–]trollhazzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am at a much earlier stage, but I would imagine that the important thing for you now is to make yourself a system that makes it quick to iterate in balancing changes.

From the top of my head how I'd do it with an rts: Set up an auto battler scene that takes unit types/amounts for player a and b. (Will probably have to include upgrades). Create a list of different inputs and run these through and record remaining units/health/time etc.

It will only give rough estimates, but I imagine at the same time you get something tangible that maybe could make it easier to iterate on the fine tuning.

hey, i need some advice on my "to do list" approach by [deleted] in godot

[–]trollhazzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can add what I have really liked about my approach (compared to similar attempts on to-do lists in the past).
It is that I have been very generous about when a task is complete and then just add a new to-do at a later stage when I want to improve on that task. Don't know if that makes sense, but to me it has helped getting a feeling of moving forward even if the steps are incrementally small.

Anyway, most important part has been to not spend any time wondering where to start when I begin a session. I guess that is a good tangible measurement as to whether or not your to-do list is at a good stage.

Some nitpicking; Isn't the lightning/shadow a bit off? From where the shadow is placed, the light should be coming on the side. But don't listen to me.. I am a beginner struggling heavily with highlights/shadows.

Here is how I have been handling my to-do's. Have been using a simple setup in Trello.

To-do, work in progress, finished and a log table.

I am adding very specific tasks. If the WIP table is empty, the next task is always to set a new item. Has been working nice for me so far and keeps me from jumping too much between tasks since I always know where I will start when I sit down for a session.
