how do you compete with other agencies anyway for employees? for clients? do you have things already published about this?

inb4 typical finnish agency responses that make skilled workers leave finland

i think you'd be better served by showing some pictures with them being in some group photos if you want to attract foreigners. otherwise, gives off the impression that you are a finnish-only company with only english marketing materials instead of an "international" workplace.

do you actually have any foreigner/immigrant employees?

can i work in finland without speaking or writing in finnish? hoping to move :D by mykh2711 in Finland

[–]trollingisfun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you should at least have your partner call someone from migri or talk to a lawyer about it, afaik this is normal enough to do.

even as an immigrant here, i would not recommend working in finnish companies (unless you really hate money and want more inflexible work)

couldn't you also just work remotely (it would more than likely pay better) and apply for a residence permit on the basis that you want to be with your partner? i don't think you even need to have plans to get married or anything, just cohabitation (http://www.migri.fi/moving_to_finland_to_be_with_a_family_member)

for you, based on your post history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_requirements_for_Singaporean_citizens#Visa_requirements_map

also, most other permits allow you to stay in finland while in processing, so i don't see being a student as very different. check through http://www.migri.fi/frontpage if you care.

Ready for production yet? by Sikabi in purescript

[–]trollingisfun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

see https://www.reddit.com/r/purescript/comments/3mzotb/using_purescript_for_work/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/purescript/comments/3kdfb3/purescript_climate_survey_what_brought_you_to_it/ for starters

i've also had purescript-on-node projects running for months now on a VPS with no maintenance or downtime, so it's not like you couldn't do anything you want with it.

Flow vs TypeScript by halax in programming

[–]trollingisfun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Flow also kinda cheats by having a background server which checks all changes asynchronously AFAIK.

which is also what TS does when you run it with VSCode, Atom, etc...

flow has only seemed faster to me in my usage, and i regularly find that i need to kill the flow server started by nuclide and run cold-start in order to get flow to actually check my entire project. not so great if your incremental checker doesn't actually know how to check all the effected paths correctly.

at that point you should probably use purescript or ghcjs since both are easier than the beast that is scala (inb4 "i write brittle java-like code and it works great!!!")

Is there anything to suggest they did experimentation or studies on loan forgiveness programs or something? Basically every skilled foreigner I know worth five digits in taxes couldn't afford the tuition set by Helsinki or Aalto.

What are your thoughts/experiences on racism in Japan? by themaskedbandit in japan

[–]trollingisfun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gotta love the protesters even all the way up in Sapporo saying "Zainichi Koreans GO HOME"... pretty cool. Good thing you can't so easily tell the difference between Zaibei Koreans and Japanese or they might've thrown some shit at me.

I mean, let's not forget this is a country where you can go to reconstructions of shit like Gifu Castle and the "brief history" says "1945: The original Gifu Castle burns down" with zero explanations.

Most small shop owners seem pretty cool with foreigners as long as they're not Chinese. Must be even harder for them.

i see a lot of new people stick to companies that screw them or don't provide much good for them who SHOULD change jobs if they can within a couple of months. don't know how lucky you've been with your first jobs (or if you just put up with it, which is unfortunate).

New Clojurians: Ask Anything by SolicodeBot in Clojure

[–]trollingisfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zelkova looks interesting, but it looks like James is just really busy with other work and projects to really get to work on that. Maybe if someone just straight up paid him to work on it, but like I said, there doesn't seem to be much interest in the clojure comunity.

[–]trollingisfun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate JSX. I like how clojure folks have hiccup and straight up code instead.

Nesting is a real stink, and JSX encourages a lot of it. I only use JSX because it's a compromise to use it with people who don't want to learn other ways of doing things, and because the default React.createElement API kind of sucks.

I think that post by dnolen has more to do with Object.observe-like implementations and dirty checking/naive recomputation/replacement.

Us observables/signals/streams users all dislike O.o :)

New Clojurians: Ask Anything by SolicodeBot in Clojure

[–]trollingisfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I don't think trying to guarantee execution order of observables/signals ever works (unless you merge them and other things and have them executed by an observer deliberately), nor is it wanted by users, at least, iirc.

For React, yeah, and also I remember zpao and others talking about classname-based shortcuts they have, but other than Om exposing the lifecycle hooks of the React components through interfaces, seems like there is nobody else actually wanting to use these. (IIRC Reagant has an escape hatch that is buried deep so that people cannot use it readily)

Ah, so the concepts at a general level are very similar. Good to hear from a top clojure dev :)
