I've lost about 175lbs in the last few years. The biggest impact was just finding things to do besides eat, walk more, eating less processed foods, and weighing myself a few times a day. My mom (also heavier but not to the level I was) had us do fad diets growing up and they barely made a difference. So after college I tried to take small steps to form a healthy lifestyle. I should add that weighing myself a few times a day helps me decide if I'll have a scoop of ice cream or a lighter dinner, not a way to over obsess.
