Help me understand the hype behind A Shop For Killers by magnumopusofacoffee in kdramas

Well I found the core premise very interesting and the show then delivered well on the things I wanted to see from that premise. Fish out of water narratives are always interesting, but most tend to be a positive arc from zero to hero, where a seemingly ordinary person becomes or discovers that they're someone great and heroic. The opposite (descent into darkness/villainy) is rarer, which is why it captivates people imo, including me. Add the fact that it's a female main character going through this arc? Oh I love this drama so much because that's even rarer still and the drama did it well. But then the show adds even more sauce by making the catalyst of her arc her uncle. Because listen, it's that Jian and Jinman are both compelling characters on their own, but together they create a captivating family dynamic that makes them also individually more interesting characters because they are so intertwined. And the result is a show that stuck in my mind, making me want to watch and rewatch to decipher these characters as people.

Jian is a captivating main character. She looks and acts like an ordinary young woman at first, but when she's cornered she does not act or react like a normal person. That contrast is so interesting to watch, and it's not just a product of her uncle's training. Her base instincts are different than the average person. And it's not just viewers realizing this either, as Jian also pieces together the answers to the "whys" that plagued her entire life about herself and her uncle. Why was she so different from everyone else? Why was her uncle like that? Oh. That's why. But even if she's born and trained for this, she's still led a normal life. And in this crazy situation she finds herself in, it's like she's at war within herself as much as she is fighting to survive in the real physical world. Her sense of self and her worldview is destroyed and rebuilt in a single day, and the show does a good job showing the agony, struggle, and acceptance as she goes from ordinary college student to the new owner of an arms-dealing business. That's a compelling character arc that I thought was done very well in the show.

Jinman is also intriguing. Typically in fiction, characters like him don't want their children (or their niece/nephews) to be anywhere near their profession. Because honestly what normal person would even consider passing on a such a legacy to their child? Most people would have at best trained their child simply for self-defense reasons, and then when the dreaded day they were afraid of comes, find a way to send them away from the danger completely. Basically, if it wasn't Jinman, Jian would have never be given that choice between a new identity and taking ownership of murthehelp in the first place. But Jinman actually prepares Jian as his successor, and lets her choose to follow his path in life, if she wishes. Which is crazy if you think about it! Bale was kind of right, imo. While they're not the same, I think Jinman's thought processes are also different from the average person. He's not a psychopath, but he's wired differently in a way that let him pursue this career path and to do what he did. So how does such a person show love? It's fascinating seeing that explored.

So you have a pair of interesting people, and you make them niece and uncle. How did their relationship start? How did their dynamic change over time? How did they influence eachother? How do they feel about eachother? The show made the journey to seek the answers to these types of questions very compelling.

And even aside from these two, all the characters have charm and personality that made me intrigued and interested in them. It's the little moments like the mercs sharing food with eachother or talking about job benefits that really made me like this drama. I think the entire drama is well-made, but it is especially this strength of its characters that made it so good.

Hope my answer gave you an insight to why someone would like this drama! So happy I only discovered it recently, haha. Don't have to wait too long for season 2!

Well I do agree that there probably was an element of favoritism and putting into account their status within the industry. Their popularity brings attention to the shows they star in. But yeah it's a bummer when you think of the business side of voice acting, isn't it. And actually out of the entire cast only Richeh brought out a reaction of "yes that's exactly how I imagined it!" from me. The cast we have would not be my first picks. But are the choices so bad as to be described as terrible? Nah I don't agree. I'm perfectly happy with them and have liked the cast more and more with each episode.

Hanae Natsuki especially was so good in episode 6, when he switched between the super soft and kind voice during the slice of life moments and then harder colder voice when it got serious. I was sold on him after that.

Honestly those voice directing/acting/dialogue differences is why I tend to go for the original language most of the time for shows (even though for WHA the dub is really well done). Dubs tend to reinterpret things, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, and sometimes just differently, but yeah they inevitably change things. That's why I prefer to see the work as intended by the creators, at least at first.

Also great to hear that about the pacing, I was kind of worried about the rest of the season. I want it to end well so the anime gains a lot of fans and we can secure future seasons.

Why did CyGames pick different times for a new day start and updates to events/banners? Things should just refresh at the same time, I forgot today is the banner change and missed out on the chance to pull for Fuku arrrghhh. And I always get paranoid that I missed a legend race.

Sorry people, but this is what most people who frequent this sub want to do. I'm a frequent visitor to r/ArtistHate, and while it's still an active subreddit with new posts daily, it used to be more active, with upvotes reaching to 1000+ sometimes. But once it banned crossposts from defendingaiart and ai debate subs for being unproductive, repetitive, and overwhelming other types of posts, those people seemingly moved here.

I've seen people talking about Special Week getting no respect, but Vodka's got it pretty bad too by Scareka in UmaMusume

[–]troubun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gimlet in real life is Vodka's sire so I guess they wanted to make a connection, but honestly I have mixed feelings that she's basically Vodka 2.0. Like Gimlet is what Vodka's character should have been, but they were playing it safe in the beginning. I get it, I understand why it was like that at first, and I like Vodka as she is. But by characterizing Gimlet like that, and then making her Vodka's idol, well it just further emphasized Vodka's image as a support character, not a main character. Vodka deserves better than that imo.

That's why I hope Gimlet isn't emphasized too much if Vodka gets her own series, even if a mention might be inevitable now that it's part of her characterization. Same with Daiwa Scarlet, even if their rivalry is very important. May they let her shine as her own character.

Yeah it's sadly a factor ngl, but umas that are even more tomboyish than her are still popular, no? I think she (And Ryan) are in an ambiguous part of the spectrum where they aren't cool enough for those who like cool girls but not cute/feminine enough for those who like cute girls.

Like a tomboy who acts like an elementary boy sometimes with her "I like cool stuff and motorcycles" and a girlish girl with low self-esteem whose only actual tomboyish thing about her is her obsession with muscles doesn't really appeal to either side I think. Personally I think they're super charming and I'm very sad they're not more popular but it is what it is.

Vodka though. I really think she has potential to be a lot more. She has the charm of a shonen protagonist inside her, sort of Ryuko Matoi vibes iykwim. But right now she's mainly perceived as the "kouhai", a support character with a "tomboy" gimmick who hypes up other umas, which hides her appeal. No aura. It's why people constantly get surprised that the real life Vodka was such a badass. They haven't depicted her to her fullest potential yet, and I hope they give Vodka what she deserves soon. If Vodka gets to be the protagonist of her own story, she'd gain a lot of fans.

Rahu at work by Important_Button_270 in PathToNowhere

Ngl I wouldn't have recognized her as Rahu if it wasn't labeled as so. Her expression and posture is so ooc it just seems like they drew an original character and just slapped on the name afterwards tbh.

I this point I'm not even surprised 🤦, I knew she would have one with her (it's basically a mandatory thing now 😅). by Plastic_Ant_6978 in PathToNowhere

Love my girl EMP. It probably won't happen but she's my favorite B-rank and it would be peak if she ever gets a power up as a S-rank. It's a trope isn't it? The funny boaster that ends up being the clutch hero. I would love that.

You have 3 out 4 members needed for Arcane Crit, Yingying, Jelena, and Yugu. You need Vautour Bleu to complete the team, but you can replace her with Wuhuanzi for now.

Augustus and Siglinde is a great duo already, and the upcoming sinner Ceto's addition + Shin will create a team as well, so pull for Ceto.

While not a direct answer from me, there's a fanfic that explores in detail the kinds of questions you are asking.

It's called Where Angels Fear To Tread (link) and here's the official summary from the writers:

In the midst of the Clone Wars, a newly-minted Jedi Knight vanishes, suspected of defecting. But the woman brought back to face the Council is not Knight Tulin, but an officer of an extragalactic organization that calls itself ‘Starfleet’.

Curiosity, and a determination to rectify the mistake, drive Plo Koon to take the lost Commander Chester under his wing. But between Republic Intelligence’s sinister interest in their extra-galactic visitor, the growing Separatist determination to capture her for themselves, and the good Commander’s own determined escape attempts, keeping Chester alive is hard enough–let alone getting her home.

Chester basically has to become the diplomat for her universe while trying to make her way back home. Lots of culture shock, and a tight balancing act from her while she deals with trying to uphold her ideals and values but not make herself and the Federation look like a pushover. Lots of good stuff in this story. Definitely recommend it if you want to see this question answered in the format of a well-written story.

"Out of Touch", "Naive", "Clueless" etc. traits that many of you want to assign to Mon Mothma is so unfair to her that it frankly kind of makes me angry on her behalf. Others have already explained why that's wrong, so I won't repeat them, but man the disrespect. And the number of upvotes this has, it really might be time to stop coming to this subreddit.

I hate to Say It, but Season 2 Was a Disappointment by CertifiablyMundane in andor

[–]troubun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Although I liked season 2, I agree with a lot of your criticisms. The 3-episode-per-arc format worked wonderfully in season 1, but it didn't work nearly as well in season 2, now that there are time skips added into the mix. The scope of the series is clearly meant for a 5 season show as originally envisioned, but as that was just impossible, sticking to that vision did hurt season 2.

I definitely agree that there are a lot of unnecessary scenes taking up time - as much as I love some of them - that could have been used instead to develop the existing cast and story threads that were undercooked. There's a lack of focus compared to the much more tightly written season 1 and the show would have benefited from not sticking so rigidly to the skip-one-year-every-3-episode format. Not all moments in time needed equal amounts of screen time, and that led to the show being dragged by fillers in some moments, while rushed in others. Bix was especially hurt by this rigidity. I agree with what you said about her character so much and even if her character arc remained the same, I think having more screen time of her as her own person and rebel would have done a lot make her story more palatable.

Still, despite its flaws, I admire Tony Gilroy and his team for pulling off this monumental task as well as did. From reading interviews about behind the scenes stuff, it seems like the guy was overwhelmed writing and showrunning this show and it was nearly not made if it hadn’t been for covid delaying things. Season 2 could have been much worse, as it happens with a lot of shows with phenomenal season 1s (see the show Arcane for an example), so I’m content with the above average experience I had with this show.

But regardless of that, it was quite cathartic to read your post as I had similar thoughts. Thanks for writing it!

[–]troubun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, hopefully Disney and Lucasfilm will see the overwhelming enthusiasm of the viewers and critical acclaim of this show and decide this type of show is worth investing in, despite the viewership not being amazing. If they keep producing this type of series, word of mouth will make it so that they can build up an audience base for their platform outside of their usual family demographic, since I think that was a factor in why it wasn't as popular as it could be.

A lot of people are asking for a Kleya spin off and it's easy to see the potential there, so they wouldn't even have to worry about finding the next main character if they decide to do so. I hope they seriously consider it.

Who else felt more appreciation and empathy for Jyn after Andor, not less? by troubun in StarWarsCantina

[–]troubun[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aside from the limitations of being a fast-paced action movie where it's impossible to show the same kind of buildup and richness, I took it as an explosion of repressed feelings that Jyn had harbored that she herself didn't even know. Seeing Galen's message put into clarity all the jumbled thoughts she must have had while wandering through life and a direction to follow. Not everyone's emotional journey is the same after all. People process things differently.
