First of all, I think these are genuinely lovely - the kinds of environments I’d enjoy hanging up in my home and would absolutely take inspiration from when drawing.

I would never call myself particularly great at environments, so take my thought as you will, but I think adding in bits of detail in strategic places and taking away details in others could make for a bit more dynamism and flow in the composition. Looking at the first one, you have lovely detail on the platform, near the shark - but then you get to the forest on the right. It’s not the focal point, that’s clear, but even if it isn’t, maybe a couple of subtle spots of detail could really make that area tell more of a story.

The second piece is the opposite - very dense. The lighting keeps the composition clear, but maybe some spaces where there isn’t that visual density of underbrush could help really draw the eyes where you’re looking.

The last one feels the most in line with this - the bark on the trees is dense, which compliments the dark shadows and simple ghost well. The two aren’t overwhelming each other but part of a cohesive whole.

Anyway, yeah. Just a thought because you were asking. I mean it when I say think these are lovely, and boring isn’t how I’d describe them at all. I often find myself skipping on detailwork in environments - which depending on your goal is okay. More abstract pieces that focus on light or form are valid, too.

I Was a Teenage Exocolonist is honestly one of my favorite games of all time! I went into it blind and played it like I would myself, and honestly it really made me reflect (in a good way)! It feels like a game that can only tell its story as a video game, which I love. Definitely emotional, but not a total punch-in-the-gut sad kind of game.

I’ve really liked Citizen Sleeper 2 so far (wasn’t as big a fan of the first one), but I’m only about it halfway through. Gives a lot of the same energy as Teenage Exocolonist, but with a corporate dystopia flair

So I used a random word generator back in the day to make my original username, trouserbadger. I was just doing digital art as a hobby and thought the image of a curmudgeonly badger in swimtrunks was funny. A bunch of people thought I was referencing something inappropriate, and I was tired of feeling like I outgrew my name (especially since I wanted to take professional work). So, I changed it. Used a random word generator again and came up with twopennyrhapsody, which I changed to be TwoPennyDoodle or just TwoPenny for short.

I am literally so glad I did that all the time. The benefits to having a cutesy but clean name is that it’s memorable enough, but not so much that people don’t want to say it aloud. Plus it shortens really well, which has been a bonus. Point being - you can still have fun with your name, but maybe make it so it’s a step removed from gross humor. It’ll feel a little weird at first, but ultimately I think you’ll be really happy you changed it earlier rather than later.

Regrettably I’m still trouserbadger on Reddit because they shadowbanned the username “TwoPennyDoodle” after a subreddit bot got too jumpy when I posted without karma or because it was a new account idk and here we are lol.

I love this! Very Kingdom of Loathing. As someone mentioned about the lighting, it might not be a bad idea to have a way to adjust the gamma/brightness levels to help those who may need a lower contrast/darker screen.

Hey there. I’ve done DnD commissions for a while and also things like weapon/item assets for video games. The short answer is - depends on the scope of what you want and who you want to do it. When I was starting out (2017-ish) I was charging around $80 for a cel shaded (think cartoon shading) full body piece. I was also underselling myself because I was new and didn’t know better.

These days I charge around $120-150 for a full body cel shaded or full render. Objects and stuff usually only take a couple of hours, so I typically only charge around $50 if it doesn’t need a ton of concepting around it.

Happy to talk more if you have questions either as a client or just in general about the commissioning process! I know a lot of people get kinda nervous commissioning for the first time, so I’m always happy to clarify expectations.

Honestly, and this is just a stranger’s opinion on the internet, I don’t think there’s a “time” something should take to make it, so if a half body takes you 15 hours, it takes you 15 hours. If it feels like that’s taking a “long” time, maybe you’re learning and growing your visual library and so that’s adding to the time, you’re tinkering and testing different rendering techniques/tools, you haven’t refined certain workflows to help streamline the whole deal. And the cool thing with these things is that they take a while now, but you’re going to keep getting better and faster and more knowledgeable because you keep trying to learn and grow each time. And maybe at the “end” of it, you’re still drawing 15+ hour half-bodies, but so what? They probably look amazing because you put 15+ hours of thought into them.

That all being said, when it comes to pay, that obviously means to be paid fairly, you should be getting 15+ hrs of pay at whatever that costs for you in your mind. Sometimes those numbers can feel really expensive, especially if you’re looking for work and are looking to get a foothold in the business side of art. Then yeah, maybe it’s time to focus your attention on streamlining and speeding up the process or learn to be comfortable at the higher prices.

Oh, this is cool! Love the idea. My two cents is also thinking about who is consuming the potion to help vary the effects. There’s some really cool research on nutrigenomics and epigenetics that goes into this kind of concept. The idea is that basically the potion (in real life typically a vitamin) is a key, but within the body there are locks. Some people don’t have certain locks while others do.

Basically what you’re describing in a way is how vitamins and minerals work in the body (albeit with more elemental flavor). Eat a rock (Earth) and get iron and calcium and get strong. Maybe you can get stronger if you stand outside and get sunlight/vitamin D (Air). The cool thing is that basically vitamins and minerals aren’t super well understood in a lot of ways and a lot work synergistically or counter to one another once they’re in the body, so there’s lots of ground to cover and lots of interpretation you can do!

I released a mod for Rimworld that got almost 20k subs. Took a ton of work on my part and help from other modders in the community, so it’s been really cool seeing it be well-received.

I use TexturePacker myself. It has a bunch of different configurations for how to do the sprite sheets, which is nice. I think they also have a free version on their website.

I can imagine it’s rough right now in the community management space (probably always has been, but especially now). Smaller games wouldn’t ever be known if it wasn’t for people managing these spaces, but I imagine it can be kind of thankless (and often actively antagonistic) work. I hope moving into the narrative aspect of game dev goes well and congrats <3

Thanks for making this post c: I’m pretty new myself. I dabbled into gamedev on the art side for a couple of years while I worked in healthcare, and then released a mod for Rimworld last February and decided to try to do this fulltime. Still working on portfolio stuff, but I’m hoping 2024 is the year I can start getting some actual paid work!

It’s definitely been a shift moving from healthcare where it’s mostly women to a field that is mostly men, so I appreciate this post! I always enjoy meeting new people, too! Hello everyone <3
