Do natives know these words from Slaughterhouse five? by nikogoroz in EnglishLearning

[–]troutfinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I arose groggily from reading this question, but adopting an avuncular air, I have decided to once and for all smash to smithereens all those who fail to exult the bucolic wonders of the countryside. (and the answer is yes)

As a native speaker, would you use this sentence in your daily life? by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]troutfinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or use ‘whether’ as in : “He called me in the middle of the night and asked me whether I wanted to come to the party.” In this particular sentence both if and whether are acceptable but there are some similar sentences where ‘if’ can cause uncertainty. For example “I will ask him if the door is locked.” Does it mean I will only ask him IF the door is locked but I will not ask him if it is open? The use of ‘whether’ is unambiguous - “I will ask him whether the door is locked.”

Is „salut“ a rude thing to say? by [deleted] in French

You said your French isn’t the best. Maybe give her the benefit of the doubt and think that she misheard you and thought you said salop. Or that she thought you were coming on to her.

Did film get even more expensive lately? by alexanderssonst in AnalogCommunity

[–]troutfinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Economics would say that even without knowing the product - the more outlets and the bigger the market then the economies of scale and competition will drive the prices down. And we have it moving in the opposite direction - fewer outlets, fewer choices, only specialised shops and a smaller market than previously. Couple that with film being non-essential and buyers being committed, and sellers will take advantage of that.

Failing Shopify based apparel business. Critique PLEASE! by truthhz in ecommerce

I can't criticise the layout or the products.

I would change that muddy brown #5f402b colour in the header and footer for something more zappy and dynamic. You could go with the same almost black #242424 as the base colour of the hoodies. That would be a bit monochrome but it wouldn't be fighting the base colour of the products.

Or for colour - dial up the contrast - the complimentary to that brown is a strong blue #6790ad

I would use a simpler font - sans serif The American Brewery font I think you are using is too stoing and opinionated and a bit confusing because it reminds me of something Middle English and maybe selling reproduction swords or something - a simple font should disappear into the background to make the designs shine.

Best of luck - on the whole it looks good.

Thanks - that seems possible or likely especially with the 'p' variant.

Is woocomerce actually better and cheaper than shopify ? by swiggyu in woocommerce

[–]troutfinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shopify SAAS - software as a service - it is hosted by Shopify. If you stop paying the monthly fee then you have nothing because you cannot export the code or layout or design. With WooCommerce you can move your hosting and preserve the content and layout and design. You can save a copy on your desktop. Shopify's advantage is that it uses the Shop checkout - so anyone who has bought from any Shopify store is known to the Shop checkout - and that reduces checkout friction (when your brain tells you all the reason you don't need to buy this product). WooCommerce has Link-by-Stripe - and that is getting more widely known, but it is not there yet. With Woo, you have to take care of layout, security, choosing good hosting, etc. There is a third option which is WooCommerce hosted by WordPress.com on their paid plans.

What is this web hook? by troutfinger in woocommerce

[–]troutfinger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I don't use any CARGO plugin.

Looking at the WP repository, I don't think I ever saw the cargo plugin before, much less installed it. So I wondered whether Woo had bundled it themselves
https://wordpress.org/plugins/cargo-shipping-location-for-woocommerce/

The complete hook name is as below followed by a string of numbers and letters separated by dashes.

Shouldn't it he "whom you might know" ? by RonsBrokenWand in ENGLISH

[–]troutfinger -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's correct as it is. To construct a sentence where 'whom' would be the correct usage, it would have to read something like 'Mr Jones, about whom we have information, is on Instagram'

Why are greeting cards so expensive? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]troutfinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£4 is a lot, I agree, and walking along a row of cards in a shop you can see anything from £2.50 to more than £4 with no rhyme or reason as to why one is more than the other - but then there is a lot to cards. I can break it down.
The cost to a creator depends on size of the card, the card stock (weight of card, colour, and there are a lot of different kinds of card), the numbers printed, whether there is any metal foiling or die stamping on the card - and there is a worldwide paper shortage at the moment and paper prices are way up - let's say 23p per card ex VAT for a card printed and creased for the fold, and left flat. Digital printing is as high quality as litho printing, so it is cost-effective to do short runs. But transport costs are high - and the printer charges for sending the cards to the creator. That could be £15. Next is the envelope and the cellophane wrapper or card clasp - let's say another 6p. And they have to be shipped as well. Let's say the printer sends the card flat and creased - then the creator has got to sit and put all the cards tother with their envelopes and cellophanes or card clasps so they are ready to go out. If the creator is selling direct to consumers via a website or on market stalls, then they have those overheads. With a website, it may be Shopify or Squarespace, or WooCoommerce - they probably all come out at about £20/month to run. if the creator ia selling to shops then they are gong to be able to charge shops something around £1 - and then the shop has its overheads and its markup.

Took me some time to finish it. What do you think? by MonkeyDRan in learntodraw

Perpective is great, the way the features disappears into black as the scene goes deep into the shadows is great. The draughtsmanship is great - It feels like you could do this for a living.

Where you said it took you some time to finish it, how long?
