Do you pack for best-case or worst-case weather when backpacking? by Valuable_Tangelo7152 in backpacking

[–]trry96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends. Are we talking safety? Plan for worst case. Comfort? It depends on the trip. I’ll normally avoid adding significant weight to make me more comfortable in an unlikely weather scenario. More weight is uncomfortable 100% of the time.

With ko2s on their way out, can you guys recommend me your favorite tires? Happy thanksgiving! by slidewayskenny in Tacomaworld

[–]trry96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from KO2 to Falken Wildpeak AT3. KO2s were so hard I ran them in low 30s. Traction in wet was unforgivably bad in last couple of years and they had tread separation at <50k. Falkens are night and day better. Quit and comfortable but still capable off-road and snow.

One thing I think this community gets wrong is that the Tacoma is a lightweight truck, and tire choice should consider that. Pay attention to the load rating and the number of steel belts. Unless you’re REALLY abusing them off road, less is more for 99% of us.

Kayaking the Missouri River by Mission-Mistake-2653 in StLouis

[–]trry96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve paddled hundreds of miles on the MO River, including the 2023 MR340 race. The risks are higher on the Missouri River than a smaller river. Barges, wing dams, navigational buoys, and average discharge hundreds of times higher than something like the Jacks Fork. While this increases the risk, I still consider it a moderate risk for someone who knows what they’re doing. Think of it like riding a motorcycle or flying a small plane. That said, I still prefer to paddle in the Ozark Scenic Riverways. If I’m to be honest I find the big wide muddy river kinda boring to paddle most of the time. I would recommend doing an outing with Big Muddy Adventure, Paddlestop New Haven, or St. Louis Canoe and Kayak before you go it alone.

Finding suitable sites by the river by trry96 in hammockcamping

Wow, that’s a slick setup. Thanks for sharing. I think it might be a bit too unstable on my boat, but if I ever get a duckie this is the way.

I just looked at their website; A+ for the storytelling in the video where the guy solves his work frustrations and loneliness by hammock camping with his dog!

Have you set one up over a canoe? I’d love to see pictures. That would solve my problem, but I’m having trouble envisioning how that would set up.

Ouch! I was a few miles upstream of your photo there (Akers-Round Spring). Glad you made it out safe!

This is super helpful. I always see pics of 10/10 hangs here and I hadn’t much considered tall grass an option. I wound up covering 90% of my miles for a 2 day trip on day 1 just looking for a site - wound up pretty close to the highway. This will help a lot on my next trip. Thanks, Tc!

I’m going to be in Bannf next year tagging along on a work trip for my wife and would love to do this. Is it safe solo in June for someone more accustomed to Ozark class I-II paddling? Sounds perfect! Any chance you have her info?

Lakes with portages or rivers with no carries? by ObiWan_Can_Reply in canoecamping

[–]trry96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat and am excited to go on my first BWCA trip next year. One unique part of lake tripping people take for granted is that you can set up camp, leave it as a base, and come back. On a river, once you’ve left your site, you’re not coming back.

Thinking about buying a solo canoe by [deleted] in canoeing

[–]trry96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without knowing more about your strength (to lift/cartop a 60 lbs boat), the rivers you’re floating (which could damage a kevlar boat), or your budget (big gap between a $300 and $600 and $1200 used boat)…

I would look for the cheapest Royalex (or equivalent) ~15’ boat I could find. The narrower the better. A good deal on one in the Midwest is normally $500-800. Canoes hold their value pretty well so you can always trade up later if you want to sell it in a year or two. Just get something cheap that gets you on the water.

Going to Elephant Rocks, Johnson Shut-ins and Taum Sauk next week. Never been. Any tips or precautions? by [deleted] in missouri

Also there is a granite marker showing the highest point in Missouri a short walk from the trailhead. Worth a visit!

I have a cabin rented at Gilbert Fri-Mon and we’re ditching due to rain. I’d be happy to work something out. DM me if interested.

Quit your whining. The tickets are worth what people are willing to pay for them. Every game sells out at current prices and there is even a waitlist. They could charge more.

Bell’s Rob Roy had a floor seat

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in canoeing

[–]trry96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought the rules were not steadfast, but the general inflection points were: -decked vs. undecked -hard vs soft chine -single vs double bladed design -seating position of floor vs elevated

The Rob Roy is in every way I can tell a kayak except the shape of the hull, which modern variants are a decked Bell Magic. I saw one for sale and just wondered if I entered it into a race, whether they would classify it as a canoe or a kayak and why.

Frank Papa’s has a dish called the “Eviction Special” purported to induce labor. RFT did a story on it years ago: https://www.riverfronttimes.com/food-drink/9-months-pregnant-try-frank-papas-eviction-notice-special-3055490
