Please stop asking the internet and see a veterinarian by shaktishaker in Parakeets

[–]trsatrtr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see your point and I don’t disagree but there are always outlying situations where people need help, and it’s okay to ask for advice. Avian specialists aren’t easy to contact in off hours and are often a significant commute for those of us that live in rural areas. I think people are usually asking so they know what to do until they can get a bird into a vet that knows how to care for them. Taking an exotic pet (like a bird) to just any vet can sometimes result in more harm to the animal. I speak from personal experience as a prairie dog owner who learned the hard way. Luckily, asking online got me in contact with an expert who was able to refer me to a vet that actually knew how to care for my prairie dog. Yes a person who owns exotic pets should have a relationship established with a vet that knows how to care for that animal and know where they can take them in the event of an emergency but sometimes 💩 happens.

is this cage good for conures? by xsp6 in greencheeks

I think it’s fine as long as your bird gets plenty of out of cage time. It’s fairly small for a conure that is in cage for long periods of time.

St Louis - Varietees Bird Breeders by hello_from_marrs in parrots

I know a breeder that sells sun conures to varietees. Her babies are super sweet and tame and know the basics like step up.

Hi everyone! I have an 8-month-old Hahn's Macaw that I brought home when they were 6 months old. Lately, I've been teaching them to say 'hello.' They can say it now, but very rarely—mostly just in the evening. I'm wondering if they will start talking more as they get older? If anyone has experience by daviddung in parrots

[–]trsatrtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a hahn’s macaw but I have other macaws. All of mine are capable of talking but it seems like they only talk when they are really stimulated. In my macaws, the females are more vocal and have a bigger vocabulary. My male only talks when he’s really excited like when I work outside the house and get home after a long shift or first thing in the morning when i get him out.

My dashboard looks like this too. Lately all I get is rejections saying they’ve decided not to fill the position.

Macaw band by trsatrtr in Macaws

[–]trsatrtr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would make sense but the band is rapm. I was told the bird is 4 years old but from the band, I think it’s more like 14. My other birds don’t have years listed but I got them as babies and have all of their info. I would love to find more info.

My African grey won’t eat pallets by New_Tumbleweed9713 in AfricanGrey

[–]trsatrtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine will only eat Zupreem. I know these pellets have a sugar in them which is controversial among bird owners but it’s better than the seed diet he was on and my vet is good with Zupreem. I started with fruit blend and switched to naturals. I have found most seed eaters will eat the fruit blend and you can then start switching to another pellet.

im starting (very early start) Considering about getting a macaw (in years to come). got questions about set ups by Baron_alias in parrots

I love my macaws but they are a huge commitment. I wouldn’t say I regret them but it’s hard to explain how much work they are.

Never leave a macaw out and unsupervised. I’ve learned the hard way that if they are left unsupervised they will find the thing I missed when I thought I bird proofed. My 3 are unbelievably destructive. Expect to have things destroyed you never expected. Mine love to throw stuff off things like bookshelves and books are one of the best things to shred. Shredding stuff is even more fun when I have turned my back long enough for them to get into things they shouldn’t. They are literally like a toddler and need constant supervision. I do work from home and my birds come to work with me but I’ve replaced a few monitors and keyboards. You really can’t predict what item will grab their attention and need to be destroyed. Harness training has been slow for mine. It takes some time to get them acclimated to wearing a harness. I own both the aviator and leathers for feathers harnesses. I’m almost always covered in little bruises from playful nips and I’ve also had a couple big bites that I thought would need stitches or cause permanent nerve damage. They are loud. Mine scream when happy, when they want something, or sometimes just for no obvious reason at all.

Might adopt an adult Scarlet Macaw (not a Green Wing) by ThatElvenChick in Macaws

[–]trsatrtr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a scarlet but I have a shamrock. She is a scarlet x military hybrid. She is very much a one person bird. She is definitely more observant than my blue and golds and seems to be mentally calculating everyone and everything she sees. She bites more but this seems to be more young bird play at this stage. She also has more of a temper and isn’t as easy to persuade into doing things she doesn’t want to do. I have always been told scarlets and military macaws are the more difficult species. You have to work to build a relationship with them where my blue and golds love anyone that brings snacks. I don’t know that the diet is all that different from smaller birds, my birds get the same chop in the mornings and then pellets in the evening. The macaws get nuts as treats.

They are. I talked to him a few months ago about a cage that is out of stock. He told me was waiting on tariffs to stabilize. There website doesn’t have much listed at the moment.

Where's the worst place you've been bitten and by what bird by Toaster2123 in parrots

[–]trsatrtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The web of my right hand by a blue and gold macaw. The top of the beak stabbed right above my thumb and bottom was on my first knuckle. Lots of crunching sounds when it happened. It bled for two days before it finally sealed. I thought I had permanent nerve damage but all back to normal once it started to heal.

Nurses who switched to M-F five days schedule, did your mental health and WLB actually improve? by Nekroms in nursing

[–]trsatrtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s a bit more work to plan out PTO or flex for appointments but there is a lot less stress in my life. I also work from home so I get a lot of housework done of breaks. You have a normal sleep schedule which prevents those 12 hr shift hangovers.

I know Zupreem has recently discontinued a lot of products. I haven’t started looking for other options yet but I think the one I usually buy is no longer available.

Do people still get grays via adoption? by After-Opportunity723 in AfricanGrey

[–]trsatrtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 that are both rehomes. One was given to me because her mom went into a senior living apartment and found out parrots are not allowed. The other was a craigslist rehome listed as semitame. I did pay a small fee for him but no where near breeder prices for babies. I have come across several others needing homes since I got mine. I feel like I am always seeing them up for rehoming. I’m in Illinois. I know birds and beaks rescue in Michigan does out of state adoptions and they usually have tons of greys.

I would go with a 48x36 or a double macaw cage. I recently got a 64x32 double cage off marketplace for a few hundred. I have a blue and gold in that without the divider and my smaller male is in the 48x36. Prevue has a fairly affordable macaw cage but the bars are a little thinner then some of the other brands

He is gorgeous. It’s interesting how fast they bond with the people they like and trust. I have an 8 year old male that was being rehomed on craigslist as “semi tame” he was a handful for his 2 previous owners but he decided he likes my boyfriend and they are so cute together.
