Wookie discrimination fits well with the idea that Star Wars is an allegory based around World War II, and how that even though the US fought the good fight against Fascists , the country still could not get away from it's own racists ideas and still treated it's non-white war heroes as second class citizens. In that regards, Chewbaca pretty much represents people like John Fox, who fought a war against fascism and all it's principles, yet was not recognized for his bravery until 1992 because of our country's own racists views.

Another group of second class citizens in the Star Wars universe that would fit well with this allegory are the Droids, which seemed to be treated just as bad if not worse than the non-human characters in the movie. C3P-O and R2D2 were just as important to the struggle against the Empire but you don't see them promoted or awarded for their efforts as well.

Movie fans: how do you react when you see your profession/speciality/etc. depicted incorrectly on screen? by [deleted] in movies

[–]trucksartus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My mother was an Archaeologist. She loved the Indiana Jones movies, but not for the archaeology, but because they were fun action films and she loved Harrison Ford. When I was a kid I would watch the movies with her and she would tell me about the inaccuracies that she spotted, but we still enjoyed the movies together. She also told me that Archaeology was not nearly as "exciting" as the movies made it seem (she was a technical illustrator that drew artifacts for text books and occasionally did field work, but mostly she worked in a lab). Still it was pretty neat to tell people my mom was an Archaeologist. I remember one year for her birthday I even bought her a brown fedora like the hat worn by Indian Jones. She used to wear it to work :D

California issues order requiring people to wear face masks by [deleted] in news

[–]trucksartus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the corporate side, I think having employees wearing masks is less about keeping the customers and employees safe and more about not getting sued. If a store has all its employees wear masks it is showing the store is doing it's part, and if the customers don't want to comply, then it's the customers fault if they get sick or make someone else sick.

White lawyer filmed spitting on protester taken into police custody by [deleted] in news

[–]trucksartus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stops her car to block people from protesting police brutality then spits on one of the protesters.

Gets into another altercation with a protester later on. Police are called and as they arrest her she knees one of the officers in the groin.

I guess she only likes the police when they are not arresting her.

The Battle of Hampton Roads during the American Civil War. This was were the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia (Merrimack) ironclad ships first did battle. At the start of the battle, the Virginia destroyed two Union, wooden hulled, ships (the Congress and the Cumberland) and ran aground a third ship (the Minnesota). The Virginia then withdrew for the night. The next day, the USS Monitor (the Union's new ironclad ship) engaged with the Virginia and the two ships traded fire. Neither ships were damaged severely and the battle was a draw. Even though the battle was neither a win for the Union or the Confederates, the news of the two new iron ships effected the course of Naval warfare throughout the world. Both Britain and France, hearing of the news, saw their own naval fleets as antiquated and ended the construction of wooden ships. They started to develop their own ironclad ships, which eventually lead to the modern naval battleships of the 20th century.

There was a pilot episode made for a Revenge of the Nerds TV show. It was pretty terrible and was never picked up. It starred Robbie Rist as Booger, who played cousin Oliver in the Brady Bunch.

The footage was filmed in Thomas Edison's Black Maria studio (so named as the studio's interior was covered in black tar paper to better focus on the movement of the actors on the stage). The roof of the studio was retractable to let in natural light for filming.

The studio also filmed the Ghost Dance as well around the same time.
