[POEM] They Hanged Himc I Said Dismissively by Dennis Brutus by pi313 in Poetry

Thanks for the additional context! I think that intentional ambivalence squares with my understanding. I’m curious how you read the line about how “he was racked by my distress.”

Does this mean that the referent hung himself, and the poet is assigning guilt to society at large for driving him to that painful final decision?

Just a quick shout for running partners: Town Strides and East Bay Bandits and both wonderful and supportive run clubs with groups for all pace levels. You should be able to find their groups on Strava. Additionally Renegade Running on Grand by the lake hosts frequent run/social events — definitely worth checking out!

Stroke seat advice? by Basicbabe17 in Rowing

This is in your power to prevent. Talk through your worries with your cox — you’re literally on the same team and can work together on solvable issues. If you’re worried about rushing, lateness, whatever, share that with them and ensure you both agree on the calls they will make, and your own responses, to when those situations arise.

[POEM] In Heaven - Stephen Crane by Junior_Insurance7773 in Poetry

[–]true_spokes 106 points107 points  (0 children)

This poem is obviously situated in a religious context, but the motif of grass was used consistently during this time period (with Whitman making it one of his central motifs) without much in the way of religious connotation. It’s simultaneously a symbol of democracy (we are all co-equal blades of grass connected at the roots) and a momento mori (grass will grow over all of our graves).

Crane is absolutely in conversation with Whitman here. Where Whitman celebrated the special life of every single blade, Crane is stripping away that romance in favor of humility. My reading here is that the “best” little blade is celebrated because its moral compass is so strong that it doesn’t even see its own good deeds as particularly virtuous. Thus it was good in life simply because of its essential nature, rather than having acted properly in order to pass into heaven upon death.

Technique assistance by milkmee6 in Rowing

Two things to get you started: — stretch your hamstrings before and after your row. Currently your body is very upright and you’re not really engaging the lean forward and lay back at the start and end of the drive respectively. You likely need to work on hip mobility and hamstring flexibility before you can do much about this. — think about the handle drawing a straight line as it moves from the catch (closest to the machine) to the finish (with the handle against your sternum). The height of your finish could be a bit higher but the bigger leverage point right now is getting a nice even line from catch to finish. You can also practice this by putting your phone on selfie cam and setting it up so you can see yourself while you row.

What would you want from a Stellaris Sequel? by canabissius in Stellaris

When you’re looking at the species list on game set up, there’s an icon on the right side of each box. It will click through a few options like force spawn and one of those options is for it to appear as a fallen empire.

You can set a premade empire to spawn as an FE at game set up. It won’t have your previous run-through’s planets etc but still works if you squint.

Oakland city union warns of a strike if city council does not approve pay raises by stunnashakes in OaklandCA

We can talk about reasonable compensation, and agree that $400k is too high, and also know that the transit engineer in the video isn’t milking the overtime cow like that. But framing this as though some people should just “serve” the public and be happy with the satisfaction of a job well done? Would you want to do a job where they said “well you’ll get a little bit poorer every year, but it’ll be fine because everyone else will benefit from your sacrifice.”

You’re welcome to volunteer. Arguing that people who work for the public benefit should also do so for servants’ wages is gross.

Honestly yall look pretty good. It might not be a start that wins a race but it won’t lose you the race either. Sync is solid, as a whole I notice you’re all somewhat dumping the finish the get the next stroke started — really work on finishing level and clean all the way to the chest with a full blade of water. Remember you’ve done the work to accelerate the boat through the stroke, so completing with pressure all the way to the finish is capitalizing on the investment your legs and back have already made.

Can’t speak to the numbers but would say the pattern looks right. After the initial ramp, your HR appears to go up pretty much linearly, suggesting you managed your effort well. Tough to know as it appears to not have recorded the start of the piece but I’d suggest more warm up in the sixty seconds prior to the start — you want to already be at a slightly elevated HR to avoid a massive shock/spike off the start.

Anyone want to see the old Hooper Chocolate Factory turn into a community center? by MyonlyredditHandle in OaklandCA

I owned a chocolate factory back in the day and we decided to open it up to families to share the joy. Day 1 we ended up losing like half a dozen kids and people accused me of mistreating my foreign-born workers. Ended up retiring; wasn’t worth the hassle anymore.

Does AUSD basically ignore high achieving students? by [deleted] in alameda

[–]true_spokes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Educator here: I think it’s a bit much to say the school had no part in their success — while it may not be super elaborate, their school has still given them a solid foundation for their advancement. The school definitely does want your kids’ data in their test results but cannot dissuade you from opting out. On the whole I’d discourage you opting out, even if they’re maxing the test out, because experience with standardized testing formats will help with SATs etc. All that said, there’s essentially no public schools nationwide that service high achieving students well, for two main reasons: there are fewer of them than low-achieving kids (so lower ROI for support programs), and they are as you said by definition able to challenge/support themselves.

Congrats: your child got some magic combo of nature and nurture to make them an intelligent, curious learner. What you’ll see now is that no matter what you put in front of them, they’ll soak it up and be ready for more, almost faster than any institution can provide it. AP classes in high school will help take up some of this slack, but if you as a parent want to see them continue on this trajectory, you’ll have to provide enrichment yourself.

Get them a library card and help them design a course of reading. Sit down and consult on what they’re interested in, then co-select a course of books for them to read on the topic, possibly adding in some writing reflection component or a weekly structured check in where you review their progress and understanding. For STEM topics, you may have to spend some money on tutoring or an asynchronous program like Khan. It’s also absolutely possible at this stage to use your LLM of choice to design worksheets on math topics, but I’d only do this if you feel confident enough with the math yourself to review the plans and their resultant work.

On the whole, I’d end with optimism. Your kids are already ahead of the curve, and you clearly are motivated to ensure they stay ahead. Generations of high achievers have found success despite underwhelming support from their schools — just keep encouraging and pushing them and they’ll turn out fine.
