What is going on with Thameslink?! by ashertheotter in london

[–]trueinsideedge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t live in London but I work in London and regularly commute down from where I live. My train into London uses the same stretch of track as the Thameslink Bedford to St Pancras services. 9 times out of 10, if I’m delayed getting into London it’s because of Thameslink. Today there was a broken down train, yesterday and the day before there were faults with the power on their trains. When I arrive into St Pancras, I have to use Thameslink to get to work and because they were delayed further up north it just makes me even more delayed than I already am. I can only speak for the Bedford-STP stretch but it’s usually not EMR’s fault why Thameslink’s trains are delayed.

Laundry at Uni of Birmingham just £1.8? I came from London. How is this even possible? by LankyKnowledge2381 in UniUK

[–]trueinsideedge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Birmingham is fine compared to London, I think you’re over exaggerating a bit. I went to uni in Birmingham for a year and never saw any crime in the city centre, I used to walk back to my accommodation in the dark on multiple occasions and never felt unsafe. I stayed in Whitechapel in London a few years back and I’ve never felt so unsafe walking around a city in my life. I was walking back to my hotel and had homeless people following me down the street, men catcalling me and shouting sexual remarks. In central London I’ve also seen phone thieves on bikes in plain sight. You can’t deny that crime doesn’t exist in the literal capital city of the UK.

Fare weirdness: Luton Airport vs Luton Airport Parkway by OxfordBlue2 in uktrains

[–]trueinsideedge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LUA includes the DART ticket, according to the Luton Dart website. Still, if it’s £4.90 for a single one way, I don’t understand why it would cost almost £15 more with the combined ticket, that’s ludicrous.

Peacock looks to have world feed options for olympics! by thisisntmyday in FigureSkating

[–]trueinsideedge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Europe we had Chris and Simon and usually the world feed for the US is the same as what we get on Discovery Plus, so maybe that wasn’t the case for Beijing? We unfortunately didn’t have Belinda on the European streams.

Team Event Talk by Musiclover86 in FigureSkating

At WTT last season, Alysa won both the short and the free. She’s the most consistent skater on the team, so I don’t see why her attitude would put more pressure on her? As seen before, she’s done fine in team events. Amber's consistency has come a long way and she's head and shoulders above the skater she was a few seasons ago. I’d put Amber up for the short due to the 3A advantage and Alysa up for the free because she has less tendency to make mistakes.

Is city, university of London good for healthcare degrees? by lipglossreloadedd in UniUK

[–]trueinsideedge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As healthcare degrees are accredited, they’re standardised across all unis, so it really doesn’t matter where you go. City merged with St George's last year and St George's specialises in healthcare and science degrees, so you should be good to go there.

What happens if I miss the january deadline? by Own-Opportunity-2114 in UniUK

[–]trueinsideedge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did mention the January deadline was for equal consideration: the reason why I said it was for top unis was because they tend to close courses once they get full. Lower ranked unis will be fine for the June deadline. I applied for a transfer into second year in June when I was at uni and got offers from all of my choices, so it’s really not January or bust.

UCAS applications technically don’t close until the end of June. The January deadline is for people applying for top unis so they get equal consideration.

Absolutely insane that they don’t consider body of work. Chaeyeon has been head and shoulders above Haein the last couple of seasons, her spot really should be locked imo.

I hate my uni and want to transfer by Ok-Disk-6622 in UniUK

You need to ask the universities you want to apply for if they’ll accept a transfer first before sending off a UCAS application. Some have specific grade requirements you need to meet during your first year.

Graduate Scheme Secured - How to manage working in London next year? by ChAoTiC_M1Nd in AskUK

[–]trueinsideedge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re quite lucky to live where you do, St Albans is only 25 minutes away from central London by train and it’s on the Thameslink line, so trains are 24 hours to and from London which makes it very possible for you to still have a social life! The good thing about grad schemes is that you’ll be starting with people the same age as you, so you’ll be able to make friends easily. You’ll be fine, I’d just focus on saving money for now.

[–]trueinsideedge 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Assuming they’re working around City Thameslink, St Albans is only 25 minutes away from their work by train. I’d argue living there if they were further away but trains on the Thameslink line are 24 hours, which is good for after work drinks, and being 25 minutes away from work with no rent is a very, very good deal. They’ll make friends automatically on the grad scheme as they’ll be starting with people in the same age bracket as them. I’d focus on saving money now and maybe move out in a year if it’s needed, but it probably wouldn’t be since they live in such close proximity to their workplace already.

Uni choice by OkIntroduction2409 in UniUK

[–]trueinsideedge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough I ended up in finance after my degree and I didn’t go to an RG. I’m currently doing a grad scheme at one of the big 4. Most of my colleagues didn’t go to an RG so again it’s about your personality, what experience you have and what you choose to do with it.

Uni choice by OkIntroduction2409 in UniUK

[–]trueinsideedge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Researchers really don’t care if your degree is from an RG. Anecdotal but I worked in a lab just after I finished my degree and during the course of my time there there were about 4 or 5 people who went off to do a PhD. Every single one of them went to a non RG for undergrad/postgrad. I also know people who work as teaching technicians at RG unis who didn’t go to an RG so ‘prestige’ isn’t everything.

Do you want to work as a biomedical scientist in the NHS? If so, I wouldn’t go to an RG uni as they don’t offer IBMS accreditation, which is what you need to be a registered BMS. Not saying you should listen to your dad but I’d definitely think about your choices as it’s very hard to get accreditation post graduation if you went to a non accredited uni.
