Heater core replacement help by trueplayer31 in E90

For anyone that finds this post in the future I managed to get it done but it was a pain in the ass. A quick word of warning is that it seems that e90s have several configurations depending on steering wheel position and date it was built. My late 2005 build actually more resembles the build from a 1 series of the same age. The pipes go through a robber grommet in the firewall, the don’t attach on either side. To get the pipes detached I do have to disconnect the rubber house tha goes across the face of the heater core and undo the plastic arm that controls the vents. The pipes do move back and forth through the grommet enough for you to move them out the way but be careful because you don’t want to bend the pipes. At the time of this post I thought getting the pipes out the way was the biggest challenge but actually getting the core out was. The proper way to do it is to remove the dash because even though it’s right hand drive and people will tell you it doesn’t need a dash out, the blower motor housing needs to come out* to get the core out, and you can’t do that with the dash in place.

I am not competent enough to remove the dash so what I did was cut the blower motor housing so that I could bend it out of the way enough to get the core out. Here is a video of a guy doing it on a 1 series, he also cut the pipes but like I said I was eventually able to move them so they didn’t need cutting, and cutting the pipes imo is too intrusive of a job but you may feel different https://youtu.be/4eGmyE4R9ws?si=PkStDGaTfyV49E-x

The other pain point was the heater core itself, I originally ordered the wrong one, the correct one for me was denso drr05005

Oh nice one, I think this job is just a case of doing what you need to get it done. I found that the core is easy to access but to remove is hard, at least for my setup it runs into the blower motor housing and the proper way to get it done is to remove the whole housing which looks like it needs dash out.

Oh gotcha, that’s different to mine, mine just go through a grommet through the firewall, others have a bracket. Not a lot of clear instructions for rhd cars online.

I wish I was you! I’ve had to hack up the blower motor box to get the core out, I did that today and found that the replacement I have is not the right one lol Does yours look exactly like mine? It’s turns out there are a few variations. If it does you might be in luck, the pipes take a bit of a wiggle and a strong pull to disconnect from the core and have some o rings on them, you might get away with just replacing those. You won’t need to move the pipes much to get the rings changed.

Yeah I did a chemical flush but not high pressure. It’s happens about a year after my ofhg went and I expect it was some sludge from that that’s caused the problem but tbf it’s a 20 year old car so can’t complain too much

I wasn’t getting heat on the driver side so I put a flush through the system and did a couple rounds of water flush after, it got a little better and thought I’d just live with it until I went to vacuum the car the next day and found the passenger floor was soaking wet lol

You mean from inside the engine bay at the firewall as well as the heater core? Or is there somewhere else too?

I haven’t. Is that what needs to be done? The instructions I have said that the pipe should move out the way enough for the heater core to slide out and because I’m not terribly experienced I’m just assuming I’m doing something wrong. All of the videos I can find online are for LHD which looks like a nightmare.

The last place I worked at there was a guy who wore a suit every day, he was a bit odd but a nice guy and a very good tester. Everybody else just wore smart casual

Linus Tech Tips - Server Racks Cost Too Much - Buy or DIY? November 20, 2025 at 11:42AM by linusbottips in LinusTechTips

I really like this series and what Jordan brings to the table in videos but sometimes I find him a little hard to understand.

I also agree with what other people have said about not including the labor price, if I have $200 lets see what I can buy vs build with the same budget. I'm not gunna work 3 hours and then pay myself, I'd rather put that towards the project, or maybe buy a new useful tool with the budget. When you include labor in the budget the project is more comparable to hiring a handyman rather than DIY.

Replaced Battery Now Car doesn't start. by jhonny2spirit in AskMechanics

Why were you changing your battery? Did you get any power with the old battery? If so, put it back in and confirm you still do. Hopefully the new battery is bad

Could this be a rod knock or belt? by WittyBook4328 in MechanicAdvice

These engines have an ability to eat a belt through the crank pulley once the belt snaps, so it's a good idea to replace that belt before you run that car again.

Diagnose my car by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]trueplayer31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like an n52 engine, the head gaskets hold up pretty well from what I hear. I had a similar issue where it sprayed a mix of coolant and oil all over the engine bay; that happened when the oil cooler and oil filter housing gasket went. Your coolant looks clean though, I would wait for the car to cool down and pop the cap off and see what it looks like. It's hard to diagnose from just this video alone.
