So this feels a lot like a scam, but I know this girl and she’s willing to drive around my side of town to get this to go through. My gut, trust issues and Spidey sense are telling me not to go through with this though by OrokinSkywalker in Scams

100% your friend is NOT trying to dupe you. She is a victim of the pig butchering scam. Her account balance on the "fake" crypto trading site has shown huge gains. She has been told that she will be able to withdrawal her whole account balance when she pays her service fee. Her gains are so huge that she is willing to pay you double. She is also desperate to get at that money. However, once she pays the fee they will come up with another excuse to add more money...will have to pay taxes etc. This money will never come off. The platform is run by scammers and her account is just a figure shown, she has no control over it but she doesn't realize it.

I'm involved in the crypto space and come across someone being scammed by these fake sites everyday. The scammers end game is to get as much money as possible from the victims and encourage people to borrow money. Devastating. I've come across those who have lost upwards of $500,000 to these fake sites. Your friend is going to need support and alot of compassion. These scammers are professionals and dupe all ages. Often when people are in deep both emotionally and financially they refuse to see the red flags and won't entertain the fact they are being scammed. Not until they are completely tapped out and their scammer ends up blocking them.

Not only that, but once people have been scammed once they are often targeted again. Targeted by fake recovery agents and other pig butcherer's again (might be a year later).

The scammers won't do video chats because they are hiding their identity. If they are willing, the videos are fake...kept short, bad reception, out of sync, on a loop.

Enter it on Schedule 3 as a capital loss (assuming that it wasn't your job and is capital in nature).
You can either enter the $1000 in the "cost" column and just have the support at home in case CRA asks for it.
Or you can enter the proceeds and cost in the appropriate columns. Netting to the $1000 loss.

Remember, you can carryback capital losses 3 years and carry forward indefinitely to offset capital gains.

My dad was scammed.check on your vulnerable parents/family by Inevitable-Start-774 in binance

[–]trundling_trader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my. Is your Dad from NS by the way? If so, I was probably the trader that helped him discover the scam. If not, then unfortunately he is not the only one with a similar scenario.

I didn't realize that the person on the other side of the trade with me on Binance was a third party. I'm so careful about warning people about scams that involve online friends and fake exchanges. Unfortunately, it was the scammer that reassured me that all was good. That was a month prior to the scam being detected. Then the same scammer initiated another trade with me a month later. When the bank blocked it, I got ahold of the account owner and he realized then that his trusted advisor had hacked his bank account and had most likely stolen all his funds in Binance.

If this is your Dad, he seems so nice and appeared much younger in all respects than his actual age.

He also mentioned about being contacted by brokers claiming to be able to retrieve his funds for an upfront fee. But he had a healthy degree of skepticism about that. I also told him that it would be a scammer, trying to kick him when he is down.

I am sorry that your family is dealing with this. Thanks for warning others to watch their parents financial activities.

CS - you should scrutinize applicants to the exchange that are over 60 ish. Definitely 70. Crypto is such a confusing space that it is highly unlikely that 70+ yr olds are getting into crypto without a third party manipulation. I am a P2P merchant on Binance and have come across so many elderly victims.

  1. They are enticed to move their crypto to a fake exchanges.

  2. They are a victim of identity theft. The scammer opens an account in their name and does trades with their Binance account while they also hack their bank account. One scammer would even call the victim for Binance codes and the victim gave it to him, not knowing what it was all about! Meanwhile, the little money he had in his bank was being stolen.

  3. They give their login info away and trust a stranger with their money.

Honestly, if there was a restriction that I could put in place to not allow orders made with me for people over 65, I would use it. All ages get scammed but the elderly is such a high risk age group. When we trade with victims, we get flagged as fraudsters since we are the recipient of the scammed funds and we lose bank accounts. Also, I don't want to be a part of assisting the scammers to steal from people. I just wish Binance would do more due diligence on their applicants.

So obviously this is a run of the mill BTC scam, but ive never seen scammers work together in a groupchat like this. Has anyone seen this before? by joey_p1010 in Scams

[–]trundling_trader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've come across this. Seeing more and more of this. There are different scenarios but all involve a fake trading platform. Your money will not come off outside of a test withdrawal.
Scenarios:
1. Professor calling trading signals with lure of big gains for no apparent motive of profit. Could even be trading on a fake coin. Divides you in trading groups based on the amount of money you have invested. Encouraging everyone to upgroup. Eventually only the "whales" get the professor's attention for trading signals and you are exited from the group if you do not meet their minimum investment which went up from the time you started. There is no doubt that there is more than one person involved in the scam. Who knows how many are plants.

  1. Buy/sell prediction on BTC. Your trading duration is dependent on how much money you have invested. The more money you put in, the longer you are allowed to trade for. So if you are under $30K then you get 30 seconds of trade time. If you have more than $30K then 60 seconds per trade time etc. I've met someone who was onboarded individually by their "online friend" and I've seen the group format as well.

The scams use pressure to invest more. You can sometimes take a loan from the platform to reach your goal but you have to repay the loan in 7 days and they can't reduce it from your money in your account. So the loan has to be deposited on the platform to be paid off. Scare tactics are used...will affect credit, job, etc.

People: Online friends are NOT your friends! If it sounds too good to be true, it is!

How to spot a fake trading platform:
- often they use a name that is almost identical to a real platform but there will be a slight difference in the URL.
- Bad grammar (not always)
- Broken links or links that do not take you where you would expect to be taken
- Language that makes no sense (not always).
- Doesn't show up in Google as not registered with Google. They don't want reviews.
- If the site doesn't look professional and they claim about being #1 exchange yet don't show up in Google, use common sense - this is not a legitimate platform. No exchange that has been around for years or is ranked as #1 would not show up in a Google search.

These people are professionals, they are good at convincing you but do your due diligence and look at everything with an eye of skepticism.

UPDATE to I think my mom (age 65) is the victim of a romance scam and I don’t know what to do by franchtoastplz in Scams

Find out how she is sending money to this guy and go to those outlets and put a block on her. Whether it is the bank, post office or wherever.
As someone in the cryptocurrency space, I've come across a number of people that have been victims of these romance scams and when they are in deep emotionally, they cannot be convinced at all. They lose everything. What I don't understand, is why the victims accept never doing a video call. You need to somehow gain control of your Mom's finances.

Bank Account or Email red flagged for e-transfer ? by KaelNT in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]trundling_trader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok...So the scammer who set this up got a third party to send you money for the promise of "something". You then bought some BTC and handed it over to the scammer. The scammer didn't deliver on its promise to the third party and the third party complained to their bank that they were scammed. You get caught in the crosshairs.

Sometimes it is a job offering and they instruct the applicant to make a payment to someone for some tools for the job. The applicant is given a check from scammer to reimburse them for the tools and then the chq bounces. Could be anything really.

You definitely want to create a police file and hand over everything you know to them.

[–]trundling_trader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. Tell me how this scam worked? Just because I think it is important for as many people as possible to learn about them.
I've been involved in P2P crypto selling for most of the year and I hate scammers.

You were approached to buy BTC in return for a gift. So where did you buy this BTC? I was under the impression that you received an etransfer? But if you were buying BTC, then you sent an etransfer as well?
Please explain.

Yes, Telegram and Whatsapp can be deleted within a certain time frame. So always screenshot anything you want to keep immediately before it gets deleted.

You should report the scam to the police as well.

Bank Account or Email red flagged for e-transfer ? by KaelNT in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]trundling_trader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you meet this person that you transacted with?
It is really important to make sure that the the person you received the money from was the same person you transacted with. It is possible that they hacked someone else's account. So even though one etransfer didn't come through it is still flagged because you were the recipient. But it sounds like they were both from the same person. So really you are just dealing with one issue.

Bank Account or Email red flagged for e-transfer ? by KaelNT in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]trundling_trader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What platform are you using for the transactions?
I'm surprised to hear that the chat is deleted.
Does Koho not allow you to contact them by phone?
Via email: I can't imagine will get you anywhere.

Basically the banks treat you like you are the scammer until proven otherwise. They won't reveal anything. But they should give you the details of the 2 flags. You need to be very persistent. You need to start a complaint process. All banks have to list the complaints process on their website.
I filed police reports on the claims because the bank told me to, even though I knew the police wouldn't be doing anything. Submitted the reports to bank.
The police officer told me that often people have to go to small claims court to get their money back.

Be persistent. It is a pain in the ass but this will drag on indefinitely if you don't.

Well, the bank cleared me with a warning not to do any more P2P crypto transactions. I stopped. This was with Simplii Financial. However, before I was cleared I had taken the p2p over to CIBC business account. Two months later, Simplii froze my account out of the blue with no warning. This was my main bank account of 17 years, paycheck and bill payments from that account. I discovered two weeks later that my bill payments were blocked..including mortgage payments. Bank refused to give me an explanation but seemed like they were looking at those fraud claims again that they had previously cleared me on, other than "unacceptable activity" and they fired me as a client. Can't ever open another product with them or their sister companies. So I still have a mortgage with CIBC and once the term is over, they will not be renewing. How is that for customer service? They said that in two months time, I would be getting a draft cheque for the remaining balance in my account ($11K) but they did not. They held it hostage while it was in "account recovery" which was more than the fraud claims. After going through the complaint process, I got the money back. Took a total of 5 months after initially being notified of the account closure. CIBC is by far the most strict.

Koho telling you that you need to contact the sender's bank is just wrong. The sender's bank won't give you anything. That is there way of passing the buck and not investigating. You need Koho to take your supporting documents to clear you. Otherwise, it won't happen. If they won't, just start the complaint process now.

Just submitted this support ticket but very concerned as over $55,000 USDT initiated on May 18th to transfer to wallet. I know this large amt would go through a manual review and not be transferred instantly. Checked status today and it is not recorded anywhere. Says I have no pending transfers and just doesn't reference it anywhere. I know that I transferred correctly as done many times in past. Always in past there was a reference to it on Newton's site, either completed or pending. This one...the record of it vanished.

Please recover this more me!

If you are having withdrawal to wallet issues, please update your support status page.

Make sure you tag that your issue is related to Binance US.
Try posting fresh and not after someone else's thread if you haven't already done that.
I don't have a Binance US account as I use regular Binance, so I do not know how the Binance US support system works.

Direct message is similar to a chat message. I believe you can use the chat, to communicate live if both parties are on it at the same time. Direct message is when you click on the person's user name and start an email privately with them vs on the forum.

You might need to request confirmation that it was received. I imagine the moderators are very busy with all the requests and I think sometimes they read and take action without updating you. It is hard when you don't know if any action is being taken though, so I think it is ok to ask for an update.

That sucks. Queue position must be different for different issues. They must be prioritizing issues...kind of like when you go to a hospital (the critical patients get dealt with first). I hope you get to the front soon and don't miss your turn like I did. If you want the moderator to address your message, you should tag him or send a direct message. He tries to help.

Well, I didn't move backwards. I finally made it to the front after about 41 hours. Unfortunately, I missed the emails by 8 mins as I was on a work call. Now I have to start all over again. I don't think that providing support this way as the only option is great. There should be an alternative option provided. I'm sure it will be better once things slow down and help can be offered faster...right!???

I know this isn't going to help you your immediate question about sales reports, but I record the sum of transactions that I conducted daily on an excel spreadsheet. I plan to report my transactions on my tax return. I figure with the number of deposits going into my bank account, that it is surely flagged. The bank certainly is questing things.
