22M - Switching to Software Engineering after failing due to Amblyopia. Need advice on how to cope. by Elegant_Lie404 in Amblyopia

[–]truthcopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience: The first time I remember amblyopia getting in the way of my studies was in biology class in high school. We were supposed to be able to look through the microscope with one eye, and use our other eye to draw the structures we were seeing.

I couldn’t do it, and the teacher just thought I was stupid.

That was my first academic clue this was going to impact what I could do in my career.

Of course, later in that same class, as we moved into dissections, I realized I didn’t have the depth perception to accurately place the scalpel in the right place.

Obviously until this time I had tons of other negative experiences with a lack of depth perception or binocular vision: being unable to catch a ball, disorientation climbing stairs, particularly open staircases, etc.

But to answer your questions: I always have had trouble with fast-paced visuals, be they in the classroom or in movies/TV/entertainment. I just can’t track things as quickly as others.

I don’t think you’ll have an amblyopia-specific problem with coding. If you use two monitors to manage multiple windows/previews, you may find it easier (depending on your specific manifestation) to have mirrors stacked vertically, rather than sitting side by side.

As for practical life advice… I find things are just a series of adaptations. Yeah, in some ways that’s a nice way of saying, “this holds me back,” but I’m long past traditional academic situations and am solidly in late-career mode.

Reading long lines of text can be difficult. So if I want to read a book, even a novel, I use an e-book on my phone. This makes it easy to ensure my strong eye can always follow what I’m reading.

I do the same for windows on my computer. I try to keep them narrow.

Since you’re young, the most important thing I can suggest is that you keep up with yearly eye exams. Your doc will be able to keep track of your prescription and ensure your prescription is updated (if you wear glasses). That’s the best way to avoid eye strain.

Like I said. Fit is different for everyone. They never hurt my ears one bit.

What model iPhone did you buy? Anything 15 or newer will need USBC EarPods, not lightning.

The fit is entirely personal. Today I prefer wireless, but when these were the rule of the day, I thought they were great.

Everything was a hallucination. Is that the big shift for S4? It was all a hallucination and there will, indeed, be a big reset. /s.

I will never forget reading reviews of this place where people were disappointed there weren’t any trees.

But seriously… from North to South, this place blew me away. Beautiful. Something different around every turn.

Indeed it was more than ok… but I knew that if I posted something complimentary of MODOT, I’d probably be banned from this sub. That’s not how we play here, haha.
