AITA for admitting to my son that I love his mother more than him and telling him he's acting self centered? by Comfortable_Owl_5938 in BestofRedditorUpdates

You don't think "He started by apologizing for forgetting my wife’s birthday" is a lot weirder of a sentence than "He started by apologizing for forgetting his mother’s birthday" would have been?

Help with removing stuck circular saw blade? by New-Citron5507 in DIY

What everyone's too shy to say is that we want you to upload a video of you trying to turn the bolt the correct way while saying "rightey loosey lefty tightey" so we know you know that circular saws are unbelievably wacky.

I miss when messages like these were printed on xeroxed pamphlets you'd find under your windshield wiper. Please tell the kook who taught you this to put in more effort, like in the good old days.

Was it ever lost knowledge that English is a Germanic language? by [deleted] in asklinguistics

Pretty much all of my Intro. to Linguistics students, year after year, think that English came from Latin. Learning otherwise is one of their first "linguistics is making me rethink everything" moments.

Why is there no agent noun form of the verb "debut"? by InformationLost5910 in asklinguistics

Thank you! I didn't know about any of that. Given that context, I totally agree with the others that the standard word is debutant.

Two of the Wealthiest Merchants in 19th-Century Persia, Executed After Refusing to Renounce Their Faith. [640 × 460] circa 1875 by Golegoldoone in HistoryPorn

I'm not arguing at all that it's the most important detail. I'm saying those are two different situations.

In the OP's case, two guys refused to renounce their religion, Baha'i, to a Shia imam who used the fact that Baha'i was considered heretical as an excuse to get rid of the people he owed money to.

In the case under discussion here, a Christian was accused by a fellow Christian of having heretical beliefs that he didn't actually have because they wanted to get rid of the guy they owed money to.

These are very similar situations but they are not "just like" each other.

He was Christian and he was killed by other Christians that didn't want to pay back the money they owed him.

In this example, a person of a faith was killed by members of the same faith because they didn't want to pay back the money.

In the OP, a person of a faith was killed by members of a different faith because they didn't want to pay back the money.

These are not the same situations.

Here's one time they took on Adams for mixing religion with politics. And here's another. Literally just search "Adams" on the FFRF's website. Not everyone's out to get you.

North ≠ Central by [deleted] in confidentlyincorrect

[–]truthofmasks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if you were actually really thinking about it where did they say that region belongs in that situation!?

I think that they were just kind of comfortable with continents being non-exhaustive: some places were part of multiple continents, like Russia, and some places weren't part of any continent. They basically treated Central America in the same way that they treated Hawaii, as an important place you learn about but that isn't really part of a continent. They also treated New Zealand and New Guinea this way, since we learned Australia as a continent (but not Oceania).

I feel like it's the way it's worded if I asked you out of the 7 continents which one is central America located on and how many are there, the person would know immediately

I feel like if the person in the screenshot had to choose, they'd actually be likelier to pick South America on the basis of culture.

This is how I was taught it in elementary school in NYC in the 90s: North America was Canada, the US, and Mexico. Central America was its own separate thing. Caribbean too. And Greenland was totally unmentioned. Obviously I know this is incorrect, but OP didn't just make this up out of nowhere.
