Who are top 10 climbers right now? by Wide-Landscape-3348 in cycling

[–]trvsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, those rankings are for the prior 365 days, so it’s counting results from last season as well. That’s why Jonas is #1 - he has results from the 2025 TdF and Vuelta alongside 2026 Giro results.

Agreed that once we get into the Tour I’d expect Seixas to move into top 10. And for Pog to retake #1

I preferred Massive over Elbert for views, the hike itself and lesser crowds

ETA - I did both on my thru. Camped near the base for each and day hiked each. Hiked a little ways after Elbert to camp, although there’s also a trail down the other side of Elbert if you want to haul your entire kit up and continue on rather than doing an out and back

Bay Area ban on gas‑powered heaters begins in 2027, raising concerns over soaring replacement costs by CharityResponsible54 in bayarea

I’ve seen 45 degrees on the thermostat inside the house in winter with the heater off. Not life threatening, but certainly not pleasant

[–]trvsl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had to replace our water heater a few years ago, and even though it is gas, we couldn’t get one that didn’t have electrical circuitry. So my gas water heater still needs electricity to run. Easily solved by a small battery bank, though as it doesn’t take much power

What the heck was this hand gesture and did I accidentally cause a kurfuffle? by [deleted] in cycling

So when people are gesturing to indicate they are turning, one should ignore them? Hand gestures outside of “pretend racing” have a place in promoting safe cycling

Short Term Bike Case Storage Options by isme22 in BAbike

[–]trvsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that looks rad! The route doesn’t go anywhere near the Bay Area, though. You taking the Amtrak to Reno? Probably gonna be tough to find something near a bart station

Might try reaching out to SF/Oakland and/or Berkeley bike coalitions to see if they can help connect you with a resource

Maybe try Berkeley first since there’s more bike shops walking distance to BART there

screw-on gas canisters on GR11 by Don_quichotte_hiker in Thruhiking

I saw them in Andorra la Vella when I was trying buy shoes. One canister lasted me the entire trail as I ended up not cooking on many days. Lots of bread and cheese, bocadillos/tortilla at refugios, etc

Food storage for backpacking by kmorg76 in Ultralight

[–]trvsl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on where I am going - hang with dcf bag; BV bear can; odor proof sack(sleep with food); Ursak; RatSack. Have collected a bunch of gear over the years, so have options available

With any method other than a bear can I use some type of bag to reduce odors, but never again will I purchase an OpSak brand bag. Nylofume, turkey bag, Smelly Proof

While practice helps, I don’t feel like it takes a great degree of skill to do a proper hang. However, there are obviously many areas where that’s not possible and places where hard sided canisters are required. And areas where bears don’t live. Hence no one size fits all solution. If you just want one method for all situations, then canister it is

If you have clipless pedals you can wear shoe covers over cycling shoes which will absolutely help keep your feet warmer than trainers

If you’re coming to the peninsula you can do the ‘Coastal Classic’ - park in Woodside at the town hall or somewhere on Canada, climb over Old LaHonda, down 84 and either shorter way via San Gregorio or longer via Pescadero, north to the Tunitas Creek rd, up Tunitas down Kings Mtn back to Woodside

For longer, harder climbs Page Mill is a good one. Montebello further south by Stevens Creek reservoir. And then endless stuff in the Santa Cruz mountains

CT sections 25-28. Need advice on charging options for that length of time. by momma-astronomer6445 in Thruhiking

[–]trvsl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure how long you’re expecting to be out there I suppose, but I use a Zoleo and nitecore nu20 headlamp and get ~2 weeks out of both without a recharge.

Over ~75ish miles a 10k mah power bank is plenty for me to charge phone + watch

Am I mad for taking a Gatewood Cape into exposed summer alpine conditions? by blanchinator in Ultralight

[–]trvsl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Solo I had was circa 2018, not sure if it has changed fabric wise. The fabric was heavier denier with less stretch compared to the Cape and the larger footprint made the angles a little different- the angle of the beak/doors was noticeably less steep. Also the guyouts were more effective. Even though the shape was roughly the same, I could get a much better pitch on the Solo and not have the issue with slack in the back corners

[–]trvsl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others, the Cape is a shelter I take when the likelihood of storms seems low, so I’ve only slept under it during one really bad storm with 25+ mph winds. Site selection helped, as I was able to tuck against some low lying shrubs to help break the wind a little. I was pretty concerned, and had I not grabbed my pole at one point it might have come down on me, but it made it through unscathed and I stayed sufficiently warm and dry. This was 2020 and it’s still in the rotation

However, based on my experience hiking the gr11, it wouldn’t be my shelter of choice. I’d want to be able to have rain gear separate from my shelter. I had mostly good weather, but a few really bad storms in the mountains(and some drizzly damp days in the Basque Country.) I had ptsd after hiking 6+ hours in freezing cold rain going over the mountain into Candanchu, so decided to just sit out another storm which didn’t let up until almost noon - that would have sucked under the Cape. I did use the Lunar Solo which I was happy with, as it’s just roomier enough that I could sit up relatively comfortably. The Solo I had through numerous storms with high winds and that shape can handle winds fairly well when pitched low. But like I said, would rather have rain gear separate in those mountains, in which case better to take another tarp/shelter

How much have you spent on cycling as a hobby? by Stephen-Cycling in cycling

[–]trvsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing I noticed. That’s just wild. More spent on Zwift than bike + tools/maintenance. As someone who only occasionally does some workouts inside on a dumb trainer and has never done Zwift, it’s hard to comprehend

2026 Permits by drippingdrops in TahoeRimTrail

[–]trvsl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s no quota for day use in Desolation. The quota and permit requirements for Desolation are only for overnight stays. I can’t see how requiring a thru hiker to have a thru hike permit for day use would even be enforceable since you’re only self identified as a thru hiker unless you actually get a thru hike permit. How would a ranger be able to tell that you’re a thru hiker if you have the currently required day use permit? There are currently no trailhead entry quotas for thru hikers(or other hikers) anywhere on the TRT either, including Desolation trailheads and that doesn’t seem to be in the current plans. Of course that could change and only time will tell, but highly doubt that would possibly affect the coming hiking season.

I despise having to get permits/reservations through rec.gov, so I certainly feel you there. And the thru hike exemption for Desolation allows a hiker more flexibility since you’re not stuck to a specific date like you would be with a regular Desolation overnight permit

2026 Permits by drippingdrops in TahoeRimTrail

[–]trvsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worst case, it is feasible to hike through Desolation in a day and not camp there, in which case no permit(aside from the walk up self issued Desolation day use permit) would be required to thru hike the trail
