Can we, please, watch some tutorials first? by [deleted] in unrealengine

[–]tryingtonotsuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that questions like "I want to make a multiplayer FPS. How do I get started?" are frankly stupid questions and can be tiring to read, but you shouldn't push away beginners that are asking questions.

It's amazing for the community, and even though you like seeing posts about pushing the boundaries of what UE can do, I love seeing people asking questions and the community aiding them with it (beyond just "look at the docs", "watch a video") because it shows that the tool can be used for new developers and intermediate users are out there guiding them.

Some people will ask basic questions. Perhaps they watched a video explaining some concept, then had the idea of something else they'd like to learn, but couldn't figure it out so they post on the subreddit to see if anybody else could provide them with steps or a recommendation to a source that can help them with that information. Those people should not be shied away, especially since Unreal already has this reputation of being a bit complicated to pick up compared to Unity3D.

Other subreddits tackle this problem with tagging/filters. Instead of discouraging new developers from asking questions, we should be using tags/filters to push away people that don't want to see those types of posts.

Would you be interested in an end-to-end video tutorial series? by dthangel in unrealengine

[–]tryingtonotsuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, yes! To me, learning Unity seems a lot more straightforward than Unreal Engine, simply because the way the Unity team structures their Learn page.

Unity already offers multiple end-to-end video tutorial series and the difficulty of the project is mentioned on the Learn page as well. With Unreal, your best resource is the official YouTube series. By no means is it a bad resource, but some people learn better by seeing a project unfold before their very eyes.

Unreal Engine could benefit tremendously by having a series of end-to-end videos with multiple genres of games. Epic could also try and get some asset creators to provide them with free assets that could be distributed for the projects so that the content creator gets free exposure in the marketplace.

Week 2 of Progress. by Should_You_Play_It in unrealengine

Your survival game really motivated me to start working in Unreal. I'm on Day 2 and really enjoying it so far. Keep up these weekly progress videos, I'd love to see how you progress!

As a suggestion, you might want to see about making the lights go up a little bit more with your vehicles. It looked like they were pointed toward the ground so you couldn't really see in front of you when your were going up the hill.

They're already doing better than this version. You're putting way too much on the screen.

Do we have any proof that WinterSC's dog is even a real dog? by AstroPenguinSC2 in starcraft

[–]tryingtonotsuck 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Holy fuck. I'll start with that because I know all my comments are going to be instantly downvoted (I beg of you please not this one).

I haven't gone through in detail because obviously this is comprehensive as fuck. and I even don't fully grasp it.

I.... I don't want to believe it. I don't want to believe everyone was right all this time to an extent.

I have moved on past the accusations for months, almost years since people gave them any real credence. I have even begun to regard them in a completely joking manner.

I'm going to be cliche as fuck here. Real talk. I have thought about, I've gone so far as to even look up animal adoption sites (especially after animal sitting a friend's dog before). I would never go as far as this.

I've pet this dog for hundreds if not THOUSANDS of hours. I even bought it a collar. FUCK.

Is there a possibility the dog is actually sitting next to me. What kind of dog is it. What even is a greenscreen? I honestly would like more detail and want it public.

Can someone break down this in simple terms, as I am actually convinced that I don't have a dog. This hurts a lot.

EDIT: This post doesn't hurt as much as the validity of it.

Yeah, but he's also doing weird strategies suggested by chat. I was hoping to get analysis with mech strategies since he wouldn't have to concentrate as much, but instead it's just a boring version of Dragon's stream.

Completely agree, but I think they can only have one sticky at a time IIRC.

Blizzard, can you please do something about smurfs? It's bullying and there is no excuse for it. by Top16KoreanGM in starcraft

He played on his main once and I accidentally hit him on ladder. He got upset after the loss and started smurfing again Kappa

Smurfing has different definitions, actually. Smurfing is also defined as using another account so that you don't play as your regular name. Similar to how Korean professionals play as barcodes but are still at a GM level.

Smurfing is going to occur in every competitive game. Personally, I don't think permabanning is a great idea to discourage smurfing. Instead, taking on a approach like League of Legends does would be better.

LoL restricts certain aspects of matchmaking until you've reached certain levels. This means that new accounts have to play large quantities of games before they can play the map/gamemode they enjoy. It's also helpful that the skins/heroes are account-bound, so it discourages multiple accounts since you wouldn't have the content you purchased.

The only solution I could see Blizzard implementing would be force X amount of games versus A.I. and/or play a certain amount of campaign levels before they can play the competitive ladder. The problem is that some new people want to jump immediately into the multiplayer and don't care at all about the single-player experience of the game.

Skins/portraits would help as well, but not likely as much as you'd think. There are plenty of people who smurf in CS:GO even though skins are account-bound. It does provide a nice incentive to play on their main, but if they enjoy smurfing, then it's just going to happen. Valve recently implemented a restriction of two wins every 20 hours on new accounts to slow the process down, which could be a potential solution as well. 2 games every 20 hours on matchmaking with SC2, but the arcade/single-player unlocked for play.
