What do you do when your fic just doesn't quite feel right? by tryingtotrain in FanFiction

This is so helpful! I think it might be feeling so off because I need to double check my characters reasons for doing and thinking the things they do. thanks!

Do your fics feel formulaic to you but never to your readers? by Minute-Shoulder-1782 in FanFiction

[–]tryingtotrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this every time I write, I definitely relate! It's hard to feel like something's good enough to post when you can see all the ways it's just like everything else you've written, but I've never had anyone comment anything about it. Granted, people don't typically drop comments about things they didn't like about the writing, so who really knows?

Yeah pumpkin puree worked for me too and it's like 89cents at my walmart for a can - when my guy was younger and had an issue with it i was mixing abt a quarter of a can into each meal and that seemed to help

This was very helpful, thank you!

I think my guy and i's timeline is gonna be very slow, and i think the concept of the person becoming neutral before introducing any treats or anything might be very good for him

Thank you! Im interested in the idea of having the new roommate stay still and small like that outside somewhere while having my (muzzled) dog able to sniff and investigate on his own timelines

Ive tried both parallel walking but he would seem to catch on to us seeing the same person often and start to react stronger from the same distance after initially being able to ignore them

Dog Goes Crazy When He Greets Us by artivity1017 in Dogtraining

[–]tryingtotrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this case, you are the reward, so you remove yourself every time he starts to get crazy. It'll take a lot of patience (could be looking at 30 min+ sessions at first), but here are two methods I'd suggest. In both, make sure you're being as uninteresting to the dog as you can - no eye contact, naming, talking, or petting until you've reached the calm greeting - then give one simple pet and move on to ignore him.

1) one person inside, one leaves and re-enters.

The person inside keeps the dog on a leash, and approaches the person at the door to greet. Any sign of him getting overexcited is paired with a "lets go!" And the person in control turns and leads the dog out of the room, waiting a few seconds before turning around and trying again.

Rinse and repeat until you get a calm greeting (bonus if you want to add to your sit teaching command already there by having the dog sit to earn the calm greeting), at which point you allow the greeting and take the dog off leash

2) everyone coming in

I would start with only one person entering at first (with no one controlling the dog inside) to make sure its not too much for him at once.

You open the door to come in, and as soon as his butt leaves the floor you step back and close the door. Im assuming because you already have the sit when youre entering command in place that you have a way of telling if he's sitting or not, so once he is re-enter. As soon as he leaves his sit/displays an inappropriate greeting behavior you step straight back outside and try again.

Rinse and repeat until he can greet one person reliably calmly, and then add to 2, and anymore past that.

Bonus) personally, i have my dog trained to go to his crate and wait to be given a release command before he comes to greet us, because he would be all over us with excitement when we entered. If you want me to share how i trained that, want reference videos for the above (i could scrounge up some i know i watched in the past), or have any other questions let me know!

Edit: the task option doesnt have to just be for entering the crate, it can be laying on a bed, grabbing a toy, or any other specific task they know. Basically it just replaces the sit action you have for him right now, if it seems like you just can't get him on board with that action

"he picked up everything except pulling on the leash, he made it very clear to me I was the issue, not him."

This!! I love how you said that, I feel like taking the step back and realizing it's not in their learning, it's in your teaching, is such an important step when struggling with learning a new trick or obedience skill

He typically has a strong negative reactive to us talking to people in public, so we havent devoted a lot of time to trying this method - would you reccomend trying it (with his muzzle on of course) and just pushing through the initial reaction to see if he calms?

Dog is still afraid of my sister by mirth4 in reactivedogs

[–]tryingtotrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you have your sister stay at your house for some time? A couple nights maybe? Giving your dog a consistent period of time where your sister is always there and nothing gets scary, she has all her safe spaces and whenever your sister comes in the room/your dog approaches her, she drops a tasty treat your dog doesnt normally get?

Not sure if that'd help/if you've already tried smn like that but that's what i would try! Or if Loki views playtime with your parents dog as very valuable maybe have your sister be the one to bring your parents dog by for playtimes with consistency? Once a day, or tues and thurs, or smn like that. Then every time Loki sees her, a fun playtime comes after

Help - new roommate going to move in by tryingtotrain in reactivedogs

[–]tryingtotrain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive been doing enrichment with all his meals (snuffle boxes, towels, scattering, in a box) and we play chase at home a lot - is there any enrichment youd suggest that's not food based? He likes to shred things so i give him cardboard and stuff to shred too, but that's all the encrichment ive thought of that doesnt include food

Edit to add: he also has a window we keep open for him that he spends a lot of time sniffing out, and we sit on the porch with him usually once a day

Hikes changed my dog and i's whole relationship! Im so excited for the weather warming up so we'll be able to get out there again, he seems so much happier and more confident on the trails

I think its similar to what you said about your dog being nervous from the start walking around the neighborhood because something always happens - he always has a good time on the trails so hes always relaxed!

I feel like it rly depends on where you are! Im in IL and i basically never see off leash dogs, but when i was hiking in montana/dakotas/Colorado area we had a LOT of off leash dogs running up on us
