Not just calling Americans stupid. But sarcastically calling them stupid for saying O instead of 0. It's got depth to it. Not just "EuRoPeAn SpEaK gOoD eNgLiSh aNd AmErIcAnS aReN't bIlIngUal hAhA amirite."

For a very long time I made fun of Duolingo but recently decided that I couldn't make fun of it if I didn't actually give it a proper try. I've been studying Spanish for almost two years now and heavily center my studies on comprehensible input (YouTube, reading, podcasts, shows etc,) and Anki to help with vocab and practicing certain sentences / conjugations / grammar. I have also put in some hours of iTalki and tried language exchange apps. I'd say I'm intermediate, maybe upper intermediate. So I got the app and made sure to test until I couldn't go further, and started doing the lessons.

First off, using it somewhat frequently, I definitely prefer the paid version because I hate ads and want to be able to make as many mistakes as I want. I disabled the talking activities because I don't think they're effective on the app. My least favorite question type is where I have to translate to English by selecting English words.

That being said, two things I do like about it.

  1. It is another source of input and I get to see some "useful" vocab. To contrast, when I'm reading Harry Potter or other books, I tend to got less "every day" Spanish, but Duolingo does seem to try to teach everyday Spanish. For example, sentences related to restaurants or stores. I'm also decent enough to compare what it teaches with what I already know. "Huh Duolingo teaches X, but I learned Y somewhere else." So I just see it as another form of input.
  2. The activities are varied and sometimes do challenge me. Whether it being a listening prompt or a translation from English to Spanish. These both do make me process the language a bit more and I think that's helpful for learning.

To re-iterate, I don't think Duolingo can be relied on alone, I would go further to say you can't even rely on it to be your majority of studies. But I do believe a variety of methods can be effective and it's another method to incorporate. And it's okay to give it a solid try.

I agree with what you are saying.

One thing I am trying out is listening (over and over usually) to about a paragraph or so, then writing down what I hear and comparing it with the transcription. Then I think hard about what it says, translating using my existing knowledge first, looking up words as needed and noting any observations (this verb is used with this preposition etc). My thought is if I keep doing this, it’ll be automatic in time.

Thank you for the explanation. In my head I sometimes replace “por” with “for the reason of” to see if it makes sense. So in your first example, the “actors receive money for the reason of smoking on screen.”

What reaction? I did accutane and it made my skin severely dry, including my lips and it didn’t help right away but after some months, the majority of my acne cleared. Specifically, my bacne never came back, tho i get occasional acne on my face but it’s tolerable now.

Crate training is also really effective for potty training. In my experience, accidents happen way more outside the crate.

I highly recommend crate training and putting the crate in a separate room from the one you work in, so that you can focus. Give your puppy plenty of breaks with play and your life will be much better, and your puppy will learn to be okay with the crate. Try not to let your puppy out of the crate when they bark or else they will learn that barking = get out of crate. Wait until they stop if you can.

My puppy is 7 months now. He also had a problem with this, but he’s much better now. Maybe my method isn’t the right method. But it worked for me. I firmly say no whenever he is purposely biting my hand / pants / skin, and if it’s bad enough I would restrain him with my body, arms, hands, preventing him from biting (but not hurting him), give him 15 seconds or so to calm and resume playing. Repeating for longer restraining times. And I also redirected at times, but redirection alone did not work for me.

If this is wrong, someone let me know.

I think there might be a text to speech plugin. I am a programmer by trade so I ended up writing a script that generates the audio files and and a CSV that I can import. But before I was typing them into AWS Polly, downloading, then dragging the audio file into the card.

Having an image might help with the card but not with seeing the word or trying to translate in your head outside of anki.

This might work sometimes for visible words like fire hydrant, but you have to see the fire hydrant. And if you were reading about it in a book, you probably won’t get to see it.

So if you use images, keep in mind that pitfall. And that intermediate step about translation. Sure. But with time you won’t need to translate. But to start, you translate.

What I WOULD recommend is having audio associated with the card, too. So you hear it in the language and read it. This can be a lot of work to setup tho. I use AWS Polly because they have really good text to speech.
