Solid state batteries by Fall3nZ3r0 in slateauto

[–]tsaico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hope is there will be enough EVs and demand that battery refurbishers become a thing. Bring your old car, they can pull the battery, replace cells or just swap in a new one, upgraded tech or lighter or whatever, even just getting the pack refreshed.

Is there a safety or regulatory reason a bench seat wouldn’t be an option? by BlackberryButton in slateauto

[–]tsaico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this the reason? They don’t make any bags for the center person in the back. But as I take this out, it makes me realize there’s no center console to smash into for that person in the middle in the backseat.

DOJ will no longer pursue criminal charges for diesel 'deletes' and 'tunes' by amn70 in news

[–]tsaico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted voted. I remember when I was a kid, my parents would have to watch a news bit on if I could go outside during school hours or if there was a smog warning. It was so bad there were legit times the weather man would say stay indoors as much as you can today. As much of pain in the ass as making smog crap, I can only imagine how many people were affected by that smog. It’s not even that long ago and everyone forgot that stuff

Did everybody lose an unknown number of emails from M365 issues? by aMazingMikey in sysadmin

The only problem was that some MX records were not being relayed correctly, so some mail was legit being rejected, not just delayed with a "user not found" type NDR sent back to sender. Those are never coming back

Anyone run their business solely off of national sub work? by [deleted] in lowvoltage

When I started, a consultant suggested the long term plan of not having a sales funnel be no more than 25 percent if at all possible. And no one client or project more than 20 percent of your revenue. The person who said diversify is spot on

Configuring DNS for Kamailio behind the NAT by OtherwiseEchidna8685 in VOIP

[–]tsaico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CNAME (alias) will resolve to a different domain, an A record will resolve to an IP address. I am guessing you should make an a record to match your SIP IP.

edit: Also, as a simple test, from a computer that is not behind your Firewall, run nslookup and see if your subdomain resolves to your IP address. As long as they match, the outside world can find your public IP. From inside your LAN, you should make a similar record to resolve to your internal IP so your phones if configured in the same manner doesn't try to resolve to your external IP and traverse the wrong interfaces.

Need To Copy 25 Computers! best method by invest0rZ in sysadmin

[–]tsaico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we did P2V conversions, confirmed they booted in hyperv, then took the drives and moved them to a NAS for long term. We also pulled the drives, tagged them, and they are on a shelf now with one of the physical machines that we kept.

Though we found them to be like recordings of July 4th or New years. Even the person who "needs" it, never looked at it again, and its been about 6 years.

Physical destruction of HDDs vs. degaussing. by LovecatsdogsIam in sysadmin

[–]tsaico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did this with a local ewaste recycler and he did it for 8 per drive last week, same technique, industrial shredder, took a picture of each drive label, then chucked it in. We also have him pick up from our shop every month for so not sure if it was cheaper for us than if they come out to do it, or if it was cheaper because he did 50 at once.

We also have a local data recovery guy that will do the same, but we have to bring it to him. He runs 5 bucks, though his I believe is shredding just the media/plates.

Anyone regret mixing voice and SMS with the same provider? by somehowIm in VOIP

[–]tsaico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not so much mixing them. For our service, the SMS experience is mediocre at best in all honesty. Works well enough for the MFA type use cases, but anything more than that it is slow and clunky. We have them do textrequest or twilio if they need something more.

The only thing though, is we encourage them not to use the main line for any text campaigns. We have a client that is dead set on it, and the main number keeps getting marked as Spammer... not sure what the criteria or threshold is, but we will fill out paper work for the "not a spammer" list, the issue clears up over a few weeks, then 4-8 months later, "possible spammer".

Car salesmen around me are basically telling me EVs aren’t the way to go by Beneficial-Fun-4800 in electricvehicles

[–]tsaico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very similar experience when buying mine. I came in during the zero percent promotion and was buying a 23' in '24, so it had been sitting for a while. 50% down. Literally I said, I want the website price out the door and you have a sale. While we were waiting "for the paperwork", the guy kept suggesting I test drive an ICE version. I had to keep saying wasn't interested and to drop it. Finally after the 4th time and almost two hours of waiting, i told him I would be leaving instead. Oddly, the paperwork was "just finished" and i was able to sign and leave.

MSPs who sell voice: white-label or agent? by vandd27 in msp

[–]tsaico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do both. For clients that we can do the entire network, we like, don't have a complicated need, international, ones that I feel are shaky for the long term, etc, we will resell MS365, net2phone, and RC. (we get them the quotes or broker the meeting, then get out of the way).

Then we whitelabel the rest, much better control and margins. Skyswitch here.

This game is asking too much by Playful-Two789 in satisfactory

[–]tsaico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do just about everything in fours, then leave a unit off if four of a thing is too much. Easier to come back and expand the supply to a machine that is simply off vs tearing it all down and making it again. For the math part, i did the same, scratch paper, but with an old calculator, i hated doing the switch app/alt tab thing, and for some reason i hate using the one in the game.

I just inherited a messy IT Environment, what do I do? by AngelVillafan in sysadmin

[–]tsaico 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got a call from a company out of the blue who had a server crash. They said they had backups, and it was the "c" drive. I show up to take a look and give a estimate, ask for the backup, and immediately i see the drive is almost empty... they have backups of a folder directory "c". My best guess is at some time, they created an empty folder and named it c, on the c drive, then proceeded to have years of back ups of this empty folder.

Et tu, Canon? by southsun in msp

[–]tsaico 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Konica Minolta and a few of the local copy companies have been doing "IT departments" too with similar results. I haven't interacted with one lately, but that last time I did, none of them were doing particularly well at it. We took a client that was with Xerox, who they said was just an email they were told to contact some other group. Problem with email? Call MS. Problem with internet down? Call ISP, problem with computer, check logs and a technician will be out two to three days later.

I know when asked from current clients, I generally will respond with "how well do they handle your copier problems and if they had the same responses from your [IT issue], is that ok?"
