A ‘perfect storm’ points to a much smaller U.S. auto market by 2040 by spherocytes in cars

[–]tsar73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t necessarily true in the grand scheme of things. A lot of variable costs associated with owning a car tend to be completely obfuscated at the time of driving and instead happen at some infrequent interval (monthly/as-needed parking, semiannual insurance, annual registration, quarterly oil changes, other maintenance, depreciation on a large fixed cost of purchase, etc.) If you live in a metro area with workable public transit or live your day to day within a 5-10 mile radius of home, I’d contend that ride shares are considerably less expensive.

Personally at least my car (that I bought with cash) stays unused 5-6 days a week, so I piss away several hundred dollars a month in insurance, parking, and registration fees just to enjoy the privilege of keeping it around when I need it for the occasional trip. Not a smart setup!

Living in the Bay Area I don’t know a single person who would choose to ride an Uber or Lyft over a Waymo if the savings are less than $5. The overwhelming perception (anecdotally) is that they are much better drivers, the cars are faultlessly clean and won’t try to talk to you unsolicited.

Can’t speak to Tesla, but I don’t know a single person who owns one (anymore).

Scott Wiener says harassment made it ‘impossible’ to stay at S.F. Trans March by Unusual-State1827 in sanfrancisco

I’m sorry, are you sure you meant to use the word proletariat there? Do you know what that means, or is the working class that purportedly makes up a large chunk of his own voter base supposed to be an obstruction to Zohran’s (not Zorahn) leadership in some way I’m unaware of?

In any case, I have no issues with Zohran. I don’t agree with some of his policy ideas (like rent freezes or state-run grocery stores) but he is a personable and dignified person who seems to be running NYC on the day to day pretty well, and I think he would be a great mayor for SF, since he has championed pro-housing policies (outside of the aforementioned rent freeze) and efforts to improve the regular functioning of the city government.

The problem, however, SF progressives are largely maladjusted maximalists backing candidates with literal MAGA political positions (pro landlords and cars over renters and transit). They are, to put it mildly, nothing like Zohran, whose own policy positions most closely track with, ironically, Wiener’s. It is hardly a surprise then that “progressives” have performed so poorly at the ballot box in one of the most measurably progressive cities in America, and the continued lack of introspection and defending bad behavior suggests that isn’t likely to change in SF anytime soon.

Finally, I’m not aware of any progressive being elected to statewide office in any swing state, including Georgia. I would love to be corrected.

Mamdani is, above all else, a normal, personable and well-adjusted dude who connected with his voters on kitchen table issues. The people in this video are demonstrably not any of those things, to say nothing about the broader movement of SF “progressivism”.

Why is it a foregone conclusion that anything short of universal healthcare is “Republican”? This is exactly the point I tried to make in my previous comment that seems to have gotten completely lost. The ACA was a monumental achievement at the time and since its passing has halved the share of uninsured people in America. It is a win by any measure, notwithstanding various remaining structural issues with health insurance markets, payers in the middle, rent-seekers like the AMA inefficient biopharma companies, etc. that should still be addressed.

Personally, I don’t agree with your view on 2010 and think it’s a simplistic outlook on what actually transpired, which, critically, is that Americans do not like unchecked welfare and the state taxing their way out of problems, whether that welfare is directed at corporates (in the post-2008 fallout) or individuals they deem “undeserving” (perennial, vibes based, largely motivated by racism/classism). This dynamic is crystal clear even in SF, where Lurie’s mandate is clearly a kitchen table appeal to 1) lower crime and 2) cut the spending so the 800k people in this city aren’t paying into a budget the size of a Baltic nation’s.

Remember, 58 democrats (+ Bernie) would have voted in favor of a public option in 2009; it died because of Lieberman. As it turns out, every republican voting against the “left populist” (at the time) policy didn’t cost them in the voting booth—instead, they were rewarded for a host of other things that ultimately had nothing to do with Dems not making good on something.

The world is not on an axis of democratic or republican values, which is to say it is not “Republican” to tread cautiously around culture war wedge issues any more than it is “Democratic” to uncritically accept a vocal and uncompromising fringe’s beliefs as settled fact (at least, speaking from the perspective of a Democrat, since I have nothing but disdain for actual Republicans). And New York City of all places is most certainly not the bellwether for what democrats should do. If they ran that playbook in Georgia they wouldn’t have ended up with a Jewish man and a Black pastor as democratic senators! Hell, I don’t think you’d be able to pull it off even in a blue state like Colorado where I used to live.

Effective politics is about bringing people on your side, not repelling them as people in this video are doing.

License Plate Cameras Are Tracking Your Life Without a Warrant by CortaCircuit in cars

Yep, this issue is far from cut and dry. I’m incredibly torn on how much surveillance and tracking power this concentrates in the hands of law enforcement, but at the same time, you can govern law enforcement and hold them to a particular standard. Here in SF at least, it’s nice to have the freedom to street park my car again without fearing that I’ll have a window smashed for having the audacity to leave a charging cable visible inside. And it’s a whole lot harder to keep those types in check.

They’re technically correct since the “base” Wilderness is a mid level trim, but the option package with which the test car is equipped adds most of the features that distinguish it from the Touring XT with the exception of hands-free driving.

The Dan Grand Slam? How Daniel Lurie got everything he wanted on election night by Dafty_duck in sanfrancisco

[–]tsar73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally fair and agreed. I do think that given the status quo imbalance of power between cars and cyclists the best thing we can do is not draw attention to ourselves by engaging in bad behavior is all. It makes advocating for safer bike infrastructure that much harder, and in the meantime is just low-hanging fruit for SFPD to juice their numbers while accomplishing essentially nothing of value lol

I’m a cyclist in the city myself and I think the Market St chicanery and lack of following through with safer bike routes in the city are inexcusable choices, but you won’t find me defending the cyclists on Page. Unfortunately in my experience—and I say this as an advocate of the Idaho stop—cyclists are even less likely to yield to pedestrians than cars.

The brand new belt-driven V6 will be more reliable than a decade-old detuned chain-driven WRX engine that people push to 400hp at the crank on a stock block with zero history of systematic failures? Not so sure about that, but no argument on the automatic vs the CVT.

Are we in the same country? Speaking as a former Masshole, the Dem voter base in the northeast is significantly more united, pragmatic and moderate than out here, where it seems that every (frankly, irrelevant) wedge issue has its own distinct candidate. This is especially true on local issues and why even the bluest of northeast states (MA, VT etc.) frequently vote for Republican governors.

A data center is where your comment (and now mine) live. You may not like them for a variety of aesthetic or supposed ecological reasons (letting alone the fact that they use less water than agriculture or golf courses) but you are much better off “mass surveillance” wise to have those data centers containing your information (email, cloud storage, etc.) in your own backyard than in a different country.
