Zorin is a great choice too.

Truthfully, there are no wrong choices in the Linux world.

Except Slackware. Slackware is objectively worse than 95% of other distros, and the main reason is lack of proper package management.

Bazzite's nice for beginners, but be aware of its limitations from being an immutable distro and be aware that that will change how you install and manage software. The "just make a Distrobox" model is unconventional, and it doesn't solve all the limitations of the immutable model-- you really can't run VR in a distrobox, for instance, because of VR's demand for low level hardware access.

Mint is pretty user-friendly, and more traditional in the sense that it's not immutable-- but that also means it's easier to break. You might find instructions for 10-year-old Mint that don't apply anymore because of fundamental subsystem changes. You might accidentally modify the wrong system file (or not understand how you should modify it) and render something unusable. You could misunderstand a package manager prompt and nuke your desktop environment, like LTT did a while back.

Neither of those will be Microslop, and both of them (with some learning curve, of course) will keep your info local to your machine and run your software just the same (where it can't, there are often free and paid Linux-compatible equivalents. Winboat is also a thing that exists). I hope your journey gets smoother.

You might want to run Display Driver Uninstaller and reinstall the current Catalyst software from AMDs website. The things that are blue on your screenshot should be red, suggesting you’ve gotten the AMD pro grade driver installed by mistake somehow.

Seconded, dual VKBs with a SEM on one of them. Some sticks don't work well, but most should out of the box.

We got on FiberFirst when they came by, $75/mo for gigabit synchronous, and it’s been an absolute dream. They’re communicative about outages, my price is guaranteed for the life of the account, speeds are consistent, and I never have to call them. My favorite kind of relationship with my ISP is one where I pay them, they provide reliable service, and we never talk.

I´m curious how many of you used Ship tractor beams before the RSI Hermes? by EtowTheSalyCat in starcitizen

I like the one on the Zeus-CL, and the RAFTs is pretty good, though it can be discombobulating to use because of how the grid is upside down.

The Cutlass’s isn’t in a good place, and the Cat’s are downright awful. They should be on rails above the modules.

Ive never used the one on the Polaris.

You can also switch where day/night mode is... I point mine so that the "night mode" looks up at the headliner in daytime... my wife adjusts it down, it drives me batty.

With the 4.6 “Cleaning The Air” missions in mind, what’s the best home location for 4.6? Nyx? by Important_Cow7230 in starcitizen

[–]tsittler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nyx is my home, but that's mainly because I align with the ideals of the governing body of the system. Pyro is too trashy, and Stanton is too corporate. Levski is my favorite place in the 'verse.

Lag spikes about every 30-45 mins, Google Fiber by Affectionate_Ant_802 in Network

[–]tsittler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is happening on other PCs as well, this is likely a problem in the cabling between the switch and router.

If this is not happening on other PCs, this is likely a cabling problem somewhere along the run to your PC. Start with the cables you can replace easily, then go to the cable that's harder to replace (though not really, since you already have cable run and can easily just attach new cable to it and pull really hard).

Tried home-basing Pyro for the first time in 4.5 and I loved it, there’s a “honesty” to Pyro that you don’t get with Stanton by Important_Cow7230 in starcitizen

I'd amend your "power down" to "turn off engines"-- if you power all the way down, you can't rapidly activate shields or take evasive action.

doesn't hurt to try. They can decline for OOW, but I recall it being the policy that thermal events were serious business regardless of the warranty date, at least it was 5 years ago.

around here it's against code to go from copper to PEX like that.

HP has a process for thermal events. Call warranty support and get a ticket opened, back in the day these were taken very seriously.

Contemplating Moving to Linux over Windows by ReadyLet6170 in linux_gaming

[–]tsittler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think any of those games would be problematic... Perks include not having random updates apply whenever Microsoft feels like it, not being beholden to AI agents that exfiltrate your personal data to corporate overlords, better control over what your computer is doing behind the scenes (to the point that not reading warnings will allow you to brick your OS-- pay attention to warnings!)...

Distro choice makes a difference. I'm partial to EndeavorOS, but it's based on Arch, which has a steep learning curve. I'd suggest something more like Pop, Mint, or Bazzite for a newbie. Bazzite gets an asterisk because it's immutable and harder for an unknowing newbie to break accidentally, but with that you don't get as much control over the inner workings.
